Featuring two PsyCop novels, Among the Living and Criss Cross, this volume will leave you on the edge of you seat, wanting more.

In Among the Living, Victor is a PsyCop, also known as a member of the Paranormal Investigation team. He's not popular with the living, as most people consider him a little odd, but the ghosts of violent crimes can't wait to tell him all about their deaths. His new case pairs him with Jacob, a non-psychic who works in sex crimes. Victor and Jacob have a history, and as they and work together to solve a set of serial crimes, they begin to explore the possibilities of a future. The case is like nothing they've ever experienced, and soon Victor finds that he's the only one who can solve the crime, and save Jacob's life. If he's not too late.

In Criss Cross, Vic figures life is pretty good. He's got his lover, Jacob. He's got some time off to go fishing, and his new partner in the Paranormal Investigation Team buys the coffee. Naturally, nothing that good can last. When Vic starts to see ghosts everywhere, things go very wrong, resulting in a trip to his doctor, who says he's got problems. Vic's friends tell Jacob he has to leave for Vic to get better, sex is starting to get dangerous, and Vic's abilities are getting out of hand. Can he and Jacob figure out what's happening in time to save Vic from becoming a pawn in a dangerous game?

Among the Living (PsyCop, #1) by Jordan Castillo Price

You know that moment when you read the first book in a series, and you do a little happy dance because you just discovered something amazing?

I'm so there right now. The only thing better than reading this book was the realization that there is a whole series ready and waiting for me :)

It was a stupid idea anyway, trying to scare off a demon by putting him in a bubble like Glenda the Good Witch. What I needed was to a house to drop on him.
It is rare for a book to hook me as quickly as this one did. Perhaps it was the anticipation... I've been ready and willing to read the PsyCop series for ages, but you know how out of control a TBR can become. I'm so glad I finally picked up these books!

The paranormal aspects were rooted in a world so well-crafted and believable, I think even those readers who aren't fans of fantasy could easily find themselves enthralled by this series.

There was a sweet connection between the MCs,
...but no insta-love.
We were treated to copious amounts of incredibly hot sex,
...but the plot took center stage.

Everything was perfectly balanced to create an amazing story. I will absolutely be continuing this series.

Victor Bayne
I was a fifth-level medium. That was almost as high as you could go [...] So I could hear, and sometimes see, the dead. And they seemed to sense it and be sure they talked my ear off. Thing was, they never knew shit.
Medium, Introvert, & Charmingly Neurotic.

The story was told from the sole POV of Victor, and I quickly fell for his character. Vic talks to dead people, or rather, dead people talk to him... Whether he wants them to or not. Turns out ghosts are regular chatterboxes when they come across a human that can hear them.

Vic's talents have made him an indispensable homicide investigator as the psychic half of a PsyCop team. Unfortunately, his partner, Maurice, has just retired from the force, and Vic finds himself faced with the prospect of being paired up with a new 'stiff' i.e. a detective without psychic abilities.

Victor Bayne might be a gifted psychic, but he's just about hopeless in every other area in life. He's a walking calamity; he has no friends, no family, no fashion sense, and he has a habit of popping pills to keep the ghosts quiet.

He's awkward... Adorably awkward... He knows it will be a challenge to cultivate a working relationship with a new partner. He doesn't make friends, can barely make living acquaintances, and lovers? Ha!

This explains why he is completely blindsided when he winds up on the receiving end of a gorgeous detective's attention.

Jacob Marks
He knows who I am. And he knows what I do. And he's willing to jack me off anyway.
Detective, Golden Boy, & Surprisingly Adorable.

Jacob is the 'stiff' in a PsyCop partnership in a completely separate precinct from Vic. He's a star detective working with his partner Carolyn - a human polygraph.

When Jacob runs into Vic at Maurice's retirement party, there's a whole lot of heat between the two. Their brief hookup in the bathroom ends with a knock on the door - It's the Sergeant - before either man can process what just happened between them, it's back to work.

There's a murder to solve...

When a serial killer strikes on the border of two Chicago precincts, Vic and Jacob wind up working the case together... Awesomeness ensues...

Looking back at the page count - a brief 89ish pages - I can hardly believe Jordan Castillo Price managed to pack so much into this story. It didn't feel rushed, and not a word was wasted. The pacing was perfection.

The story flowed beautifully - a combination of detective work, sex, suspense, paranormal, and the perfect amount of humor.

The world-building was brilliant, the characters were well crafted, but it was definitely the humor that hooked me.

I'll always be a sucker for a book that can make me smile and laugh.

I really hate threesomes when one of the participants is dead.
I could have plucked a dozen little quips like that to illustrate the quirky humor that saturates the book.

This is the kind of story that leaves you smiling, satisfied, yet excited for more!

Criss Cross (PsyCop, #2) by Jordan Castillo Price

Poor Vic can't catch a break...
Not only had my reality become more Dawn of the Dead than I was accustomed to, but suddenly all the hungry cadavers were acting like I was in possession of the world's last brain...
When your life revolves around talking to ghosts to solve murders, how can you tell when things are getting out of hand?

For Victor, the answer is quite simple: All the ghosts which used to chat him up are becoming a bit grabby... And they're everywhere.

The delicate hold Vic had on sanity is slipping...

In the previous book of this series, Victor couldn't hardly find two ghosts to rub together to solve a case. In this book, he's having quite the opposite problem... And ya know, a lot more problems on top of that... Because for the first time, Vic has a life outside of work...

Victor Bayne
“That’s what’s wrong with Psychs,” I said. “The sixth sense doesn’t match up with the other senses, so anything we describe comes out flawed. It’s like trying to describe how purple smells, or what pain sounds like.”
The sudden increase in paranormal activity isn't a huge deal at first. Victor is the kinda guy who has no problem taking a side of Auracel with his Auracel in order to make the spirits go away. Unfortunately, Vic has to stay off the pills, Doctor's orders, and doesn't that just put the last nail in this undead coffin?

Turns out Vic's liver is none-too-happy about his habit of taking WAY more than the recommended dose of Auracel and now he has to go clean for the foreseeable future.

Even Vic's boyfriend is suffering...

Jacob Marks
I probably should’ve just trusted him. Maybe I did. Maybe it was me that I couldn’t trust. [...] I wondered if I was ever totally present for Jacob, or if he always had to search for the real me between the cracks of all the drugs I took...
Sweet, steady, Jacob... I'm beginning to think Jacob is the perfect person for Vic, but I'm not so sure Vic is the best person for Jacob. Vic has been lashing out in his sleep - violently attacking Jacob, but waking with no memory of the event...

Jacob's partner Carolyn decides that Victor needs to visit an Empathetic Healer... After all, Vic's problem is a ghost problem, not a drug problem, right? Unfortunately, going to the healer puts Vic face-to-face with an entirely different kind of of specter: Jacob's Ex-Boyfriend (*dramatic music plays*) - Crash, the punked-out no-nonsense healer is
a) Kind of an asshole
b) Doesn't believe Vic is an actual Medium
c) Vic's only hope if he wants the ghosts to go away without drugs

On top of all that, Vic is trying to wrap his brain around the multitude of changes in his life...
New Boyfriend,
New Doctor,
New Uncool Sobriety,
New Partner,
New swarming ghost problem...

Just another day in the life of a PsyCop...

Until Lisa (Vic's former partner) starts calling him from her PsyTraining facility and warning him not to trust anyone. Even Jacob...

This installment of the series layered in quite a bit more suspense, which was lovely. I'm also appreciating the dynamic between Vic and Jacob as I see more of their relationship unfolding. I'd definitely like to see more info on Jacob... Maybe some backstory? Hey, I've got the whole series ahead of me, I'm sure I'll get oodles more info on both my guys ;)

I'm off to read the next book!

This is a series I love to reread a lot. It sounds odd, but this is almost like a comfort read to me by now. Vic always manages to make me feel better, no matter what's going on. Vic is a regular guy who just happens to be able to see and interact with ghosts. This is not something he enjoys doing, but it becomes his life work, as a Psycop. He's quirky in a humorous way, and his relationship with Jacob (another Psycop) is very realistic and fun to read about. All the side characters are well drawn too, and the mysteries are always gripping. These books are a tad bit scary, very mysterious, sexy as heck, and are very hard to put down.

"PsyCop: Partners" by Jordan Castillo Price is an amazing book. Sure, it was published in the ebook form first but contrary to for example Kayelle Allen's book, this one rocks. It's a sci-fi detective/cop story written from the 1st POV of Vic Bayne, a PsyCop and certified Medium who can hear dead people.

In this book's universe, Mediums are recognized and certified and they work in special squads called the PsyCops. Every PsyCop has a non-psychic partner, the so called Stiff. Together they solve crimes and whatever the Psychic sees or hears, is admittable in court.

As I mentioned, Detective Vic Bayne is such a Psychic. But because he is a Class Five Medium (one of the highest Classes), his abilities can be a real pain in his behind. You see, dead people are rather chatty and they all want to spill their guts and tell Vic how gruesomely they died. And to stop these visions from driving him mad, Vic is usually high as a kite on Auracel, a psy-drug.

In this book, there are two stories there: the first one called "Among the Living", the second one "Criss Cross". The first story begins when Vic's partner of twelve years retires, leaving Vic with a new partner, Lisa... who soon turns out to be a Psychic too and because two Psychics can't work together, they kick her out of the force and Vic must find a new partner. In the middle of a gruesome murder investigation. And with a new love interest too. Vic is lucky that his new boyfriend, Detective Jacob Marks is really understanding and supportive. And while they are trying to build a relationship, someone is horrendously murdering gay men and their souls seem to simply... disappear...

In the second story, Vic's life is turned upside down when he starts not only hearing but seeing the dead people too. And they are not trying just to talk to him, but to grab him too. Which freaks Vic out. And that makes Jacob worried of course. That and the fact that Vic tends to space out and scratch deep Xs into Jacob's skin with his fingernails, pens etc. And while Vic is trying to figure out what's going on, he finds himself right in the middle of a wide-spread conspiracy that seems centered all around him...

This book is a real ride. I had it finished in two days. I just couldn't put it down. The stories are so refreshingly interesting and well developed, just like the characters. It's a detective story first, a gay romance second. There is some sex but it doesn't take over the story itself, it doesn't push the plot into the background. And it was great to read about a loving gay couple. Price's Jacob doesn't wear rainbow colors but he is not ashamed of what he is, he is not ashamed of being in love with another cop. Which makes me rather happy.

It's obvious that the author paid much attention to details in his character development. Like Vic's obsession with the white color, his addiction to Starbuck coffee, his unwillingness to buy condoms because it would mean that he wants to take his relationship with Jacob a step further, his sloppiness, his inability to spend money on anything... All these details make his character and the supporting stuff come alive.

This was a book WAY out of my usual comfort zone, but due to a friends recomendation I gave it a shot and although I enjoyed aspects of it, I really found other bits uncomfortable and I think that is more to do with me than the writer.

This was my first m/m book(s). I say books since its two stories in one. I enjoyed the premise and the actual storyline and plots, especially in the second book were rather good. I liked the main character and could relate to him. The fact that he was gay never really bothered me. He had a dry wit and seemed well rounded. I didn't know where each story would go and was anxious to see how eveyrthing panned out but......

There were a few things I didn't enjoy about this story. Again I think one was maybe more me, but still

*I didn't like the sex scenes and the more I think about it, the more it just seemed they were thrown in for the sake to be shocking. One dream sequence didn't feel out of place but the others just seemed to take you away from the story. Someone previously commented on that and I had to sit back and actually change my mind set. If this was a f/m story, would I have felt the same and the answer was yes.

*The wrapping up of both stories seemed a bit rushed. Everything seemed to be tied up in a bow and then both chracters fell into bed after some pretty traumatic happenings. Now being female, maybe things are different for guys, but I'm not sure if it was the tone or the unfamilliarity of the dynamics, but I just felt it was.... weird.

*Also I didn't like Jacob. He just didn't seem like a well rounded character.

*The underdevelopment of Crash in the second novel was a bit of a downer and the fact he basically offered to hook up with Vic with no real indication that was in his nature.

I've tried this series, but I know I won't read more.

Actually, I'm re-reading this. I've got a couple of the sequels on my Kindle, and I need to brush up my Price. *g*

I have to admit I'm a sucker for the way she ended Among the Living. Highly recommended. *g*

Among the Living
I am a total sucker for M/M cop stories. I just am. I admit it. And I found Vic and Jacob a wonderful combo—one so willing to pursue and one barely keeping up with the idea of being pursed, but not resisting either.

I also liked that the language was real and not glossed for PCness. How do I express this? At one point, for example, Vic states that a room was full of black boys. But as a reader you understood that this was nothing more than a physical description of the people inhabiting the room. There was no judgement inherent in it or slight intended and thus Vic could skirt the 'is it PC to say this' question. It got around the overly scrutinized way many Americans' sphincter clenches in fear every-time someone dares describe a racial minority. (Please don't get me wrong, in the same way I appreciated the book's frankness, I don't mean to trivialize or demean the very real stresses that still exist in America. But after several years living abroad, I've come to appreciate that not only our utter inability to even talk about the subject, but also our unwillingness/inability to allow the language around race to become normalized and uncharged is prohibitive and I was impressed by the authors willingness to allow the color of a character's skin to be as normal and non-angsty as hair color. Plus, there simply were characters of color.) Similarly, Vic's observation of his own and the victims' gayness felt natural and non-titillated.

While I enjoyed the mystery, I was bothered more than once that Vic had information that the other detectives needed but he never provided. And I thought Lisa's contribution made the whole thing feel a little too easy.

All in all, though, I really quite enjoyed it.

Criss Cross
Again, I quite enjoyed this story by Price. I'll definitely be looking to finish the series and keeping my eyes open for others. I found Vic and Jacob hot together and Jacob is just so wonderfully accepting and understanding. He makes me swoon.

I did think it was all a little predictable. I had it figured out quite early and I thought the plot line (as in who was the bad guy, etc) was one I had read many times before, even if not necessarily with the psychic aspect. And, for being the elite of the bureau they sure don't seem to vet their officers very well.

I've always loved books where the characters had use of more than just the normal five senses. Call them psychics, or whatever, they always fascinated me. I always wanted to have powers like that, just like I always wanted to run off and join the circus, or mutate and join the X-Men.
Reading books like this, lets me have that fantasy back for just a little while.
Not to mention the fact that it has to beautiful men banging each others brains out. That always puts a grin on my face.
All in all the book just made me happy. That's really all I'm looking for in a piece of fiction.

'Partners' (PsyCop, # 1 & 2) by Jordan Castillo Price

I read both of these books separately and noticed they are now combined into one volume. These are both fantastic storylines so do yourself a favor, save a buck or two by opting for this combo book, and get a head-start on this fabulous and spooky series!

Odd & eerie is just the starting point in this well-written series and it just keeps getting more and more interesting as devious plots unfold...
Who CAN you trust?

"The Truth Is Out There"...somewhere... 😉

I love this whole series; one of my all-time faves!

Two thumbs up! 👍👍

So my only real issue with the relationship is that it fell into the trope "Your Gay? I'm gay too, lets get together forever."

But otherwise I found the world really interesting and the plots fun to go along. Wish Vic would explore his abilities a bit more, but I suspect that that will be the theme of further books. Definitely want to pick up the rest of the series.

4.5 of 5 stars – Fascinating Start of My PsyCop Love Affair.

This was an engaging, raw, realistic (what I'll coin as a) "paranormal noir," with the wonderful twist of the MC being gay and having paranormal abilities put to use in his detecting job. This first and second in the series was an exciting start of what has become a favorite series of mine. Yet, for those interested, they also worked well as standalones - they had a self-contained mystery with a conclusive ending, but also introduced and developed the life of the MC (Vic), his partner and possible boyfriend (Jacob), and other supporting characters in a way that nicely set up the nrxt book.

Jordan Castillo Price's style was straightforward, even edgy to fit the story. She created a well thought-out world of psychics and their various abilities, and an outside world of how they were dealt with and used. And with my living in the city, I enjoyed the Chicago setting, but it could serve any reader for a big city setting.

Although both were more novella length, the plots were realistic, nicely paced and developed in a believable way. I liked that the main focus was on the mystery and Vic's psychic life, with the gay aspect and any romance as a major subplot that will develop further in future books. In Among the Living, the premise of the mystery was interesting within this paranormal world, and the search for a serial killer who sucks spirits so there are no dead witnesses was suspenseful and edgy; but even though the build up to it was actually better than the actual climax, it still held my attention and made sense in this world. In Criss Cross, Vic's psychic life was going off kilter. The mystery itself was not as strong as in the first one, being pretty straightforward; but I was okay with it taking a backseat to Vic's psychic imbalance and personal complexities because it was nicely conceived, developed and suspenseful.

The whole set of characters were fairly well developed. Of course there was more on the main characters, with Price really getting into the mind and mindset of a disturbed psychic, depicting a little off-balance but still functioning guy who I grew to like for all his skills, heart and humanness. Even with the supporting cast I got a good feel for who they were, and I liked the introduction of some new ones in book 2, like Jacob's ex. It was also nice that some characters returned in book 2; but they were included and described as well as any standalone.

A nice bonus was the relationship that developed between Vic and Jacob. It gave a good sense of two guys who are strongly attracted to each other and the realistic struggles of how a relationship develops. I also thought the sex scenes between them were pretty hot. described in an erotic way that a gay guy would like. I appreciated that it wasn't overly romantic as some in this genre are, because I thought they were realistic for gay guys and fit in with the intensity of the story.

I was impressed with the level of quality that Price brought to these first two installments in the series, and I look forward to the next one.

Funny narration and plots just shy of really creepy

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 9/10

PROS:
- Vic is an absolute mess. He’s addicted to prescription medication, he’s obsessive about seemingly innocuous things, ghosts not only talk to him but seek him out and practically stalk him, and he’s awkward and unsure of himself and utterly convinced of his own uselessness. In spite of all of that, he’s one of the most likeable characters I’ve ever encountered in this genre.
- The narration is very funny at times. (Example: “I really hate threesomes when one of the participants is dead.”) My favorite thing about it, though, is how quickly the story moves on after relaying a humorous line. It’s like those people who can tell a joke in the middle of a story without ever cracking a smile: they KNOW they’re funny, and they don’t need a laugh from you in order to confirm it.
- Price has a way of writing sex scenes that fit into the story perfectly. I always worry just a bit when an erotic story is written in first-person because people don’t typically speak the way erotic sex scenes are written: a guy relating the events of last night with his boyfriend isn’t likely to describe everything in a detailed play-by-play. The scenes in this book are well done, though: Vic tells what happened in enough detail to get the point across without getting all flowery and going into too much salacious detail.
- The array of characters in these stories--especially the characters with psychic abilities--provides a never-ending supply of humor and interesting plot developments. It’s a little bit like reading X-Men: I kept thinking, “What’s THIS guy’s ability going to be, and how are they going to use it to defeat the forces of evil?”

CON:
- (Disclaimer here: I’m a huge wimp when it comes to scariness.) The plots of these two novellas are just a little on the creepy side for me. They’re not scary enough that I had nightmares or anything, and the big climax of each story is over pretty quickly (which might be a separate con for some people), but still. The characters ARE dealing with supernatural forces that are a little on the disturbing side.

Overall comments: I first read the PsyCop stories over a year ago: they were some of the first m/m books I read, and even after having read dozens more since then, they’re still some of my favorites. Vic’s narration is fast and sharp and deliciously sarcastic, and Jacob is Captain America’s slightly-more-perfect gay twin. They’re an odd couple, for sure, but they work together.

Victor Bayne is the psychic member of a PsyCop unit, a team with a psychic and a non-psychic to balance each other out. He is a level-five medium, and hears the dead, even sees them every once in a while, but they can get quite bothersome. So what does Vic do? Self-medicate, obviously. A new drug has been developed to keep the ghosties away, at least for a short time, and Vic uses it religiously, claiming that it has nothing to do with the high that comes along with silence of the voices.

At his partner, Maurice's, retirement party, Vic meets Jacob Marks and promptly does him in the bathroom. Very exciting. Then they find out that they'll be working together on a case, and as they do, they grow closer and closer until Vic starts to think that he's falling in love.

Will Vic's be able to save Jacob--not to mention himself--from the paranormal creatures that have made Chicago their newest haunt, or will the beasties get them both? You'll love finding out!

Following the theme of genres that I don't read often, PsyCop is about two gay cops and their adventures in what I would assume is the future. I liked the plot, even if the books were a bit short for my taste, as well as most of the characters. The reason it lost the one zombie is that Vic and Jacob were just suddenly in a relationship. There was no 'oh, should we date?' or anything, just sex and then dating, all in the first twenty pages. But after I got over that, it was a great two books, with a really neat cover!

Victor was a really nice hero, not the KILLMAIMDESTROY macho man that I've been seeing a lot of recently, and he was very refreshing. I also liked Jacob, and his goatee. Very smexy. And, unlike some couples I've read about, they clicked. I wasn't sitting there going "These two shouldn't be together!!! *HEAD, WALL. WALL, HEAD*"

The mysteries were both pretty fabulous, but seemed to wrap up too suddenly at the end of the books. I don't know if this is because of a word limit imposed by the publisher/editor, or just the author's personal preference, but I would have liked them to go on longer.

I'm looking forward to reading about Vic and Jacob's development as a couple in the next books, and to seeing some of the other character's I've come to love!

PsyCop: Partners was one of those books that came with all these glowing "you've got to read it" recommendations and after I finished it I thought actually, no I didn't. It's also one of those books where the secondary characters are a damn-sight more interesting than the main ones. Basically it's a psychic cop/non psychic cop fuck buddy story. The psychic cop, Victor Bayne spends almost all of the book in some sort of drugged stupor in order to not see or deal with the ghosts who talk to him and/or want him to solve their murders. Granted, that's got to be tough on the old love life, to constantly see dead people at the most inopportune times, but Vic doesn't seem all that interested in trying to make the best of his talents. Instead of being wry or droll about his abilities, he seriously comes off as a whiny pill-popper. His partner, Jacob Marks, is that typically annoying alpha male who has all the standard equipment that any self-respecting alpha would have--a great body, a great face, and of course a cock of almost prodigious proportions.

I think somewhere in these two novels the two of them manage to solve a series of crimes, but the whole thing was just so blah that I didn't even care that much. What saves this book from being an utter waste and why I rated it Two Stars are the secondary characters--Lisa Gutierrez, a cop with a psy-talent she really doesn't want (EPIC FAIL ALERT: with a name like Gutierrez it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure she's not Serbo-Croatian, but the author just can't help tossing in practically every bad latino stereotype known to man, including the banda music, sheesh The sure sign of an author who needs some serious sensitivity training, or better yet, a crash course in crafting non-stereotyped characters!); Carolyn Brinkman, Jacob's psy partner who can detect a lie (and also cannot tell one); and Crash, the acid-tongued, quirky owner of a psychic shop who was also Jacob's ex. Crash seriously needs his own novel. Oh yeah, there's sex in the book but it was just so pedestrian. The supposed attraction between Vic and Jacob wasn't there. Overall, a decent time-waster, excellent for shutting off one's brains for a spell.

“Partners” is a combination of the first two novellas, “Beyond the Living” and “Criss Cross”.
Paranormal Romance/Horror/Suspense. Jordan Castillo Price is a master of this crazy genre she writes. I have never read anything quite like her work, and it gets me every time.

It's her gritty language. It's her way of weaving plot and drama effortlessly. It's her protagonist work. It’s her imperfect sex. It's her humor. It's her darkness.

The world building is excellent and real, Price’s characters are real, and the plot ping pongs between horrific, hilarious, and fucking sweet.

Victor Bayne comes alive on the page, and if you’re a reader like me, it’s easy to become him.
Even though Vic is a super star in the paranormal investigations unit of law enforcement, he is deeply flawed and vulnerable. He uses downers and uppers (barely legal) to function, and he pretty much has to drag himself out of bed every day. The nature of his job and the people who care about him are really the only connections that keep him going day in and day out. I could see him living as a hermit if it weren’t for them.

But he’s a genius, he really is. He sees things that no one else does – literally. He sees and can talk to dead people. He thinks it’s a curse and the world thinks he’s a freak, but they use him. He knows he is just a tool, something to be used until he goes crazy and they put him away for good.
It seems like he’s just biding his time until that happens, taking what high he can get until it’s time to play the puppet again.

Price doesn’t write perfect sex and I fucking love her for it. In the first sex scene, Vic’s on the verge of puking from the awful taste of the drugs in his mouth, and then a half minute later he’s getting a hand job. In another scene, he’s pressed up against the window “like a bug”. Gritty. Real life sex isn’t perfect and neither is her fictional sex.

The reality of her work grounds you into the moment and makes it that much more awesome. Check it out.

I’ll try to keep this short and sweet since other reviewers with similar ratings have said it better but I really wanted to like this more than I did. The plot, while interesting, was weighed down by main characters that weren’t really likeable. Victor, the narrator and psychic (he can see dead people) of the story, came off as whiny and sullen rather than just weary of his ability and grew steadily more dislikeable as time went on. Jacob, his lover, was rather bland and seemed to be there only as a vehicle for Victor to end up having some sort of sexual relationship with somebody.

Speaking of the sex, it was pretty boring. No sexual tension at all between them, even though Jacob was supposedly the typical sexy alpha male type, and I’m not sure why they got together in the first place. I mean, literally, I have no idea – I feel like the author never tried to explain it (or show it) so there’s no clear transition from them being fuck buddies to them being more.

As for the cases, they were interesting (the second book, ‘Criss Cross’ started out really fascinating) and were helped along by secondary characters that were a lot of fun to read about but with the MCs being so lackluster they just didn’t hold my attention for long.

In the end, I think this was a decent enough book but was a bit too dulled down for my taste.

(On a side note, I think the story might have been better told from third person point-of-view rather than first person. It might have added a bit more mystery to the narrative and given the main characters more life.)

2.5 stars.

Expanding this review to includes the entire Psy-Cop series. Got the first two anthologies right before taking off to Vermont for a long Turkey Day stay with family. Thank heavens I did, SkiResort but No Snow - forgot my passport so visiting Montreal was out too. If I do not have at least six books waiting to read I panic so I purchased the rest of the series via Kindle to curb my anxiety of being stuck with nothing worth reading. Did the family things and managed to read the entire series to date - and it was more than worth the sleeplessness.

The characters of Vic and Jacob with various supporting players are strong, interesting, perfectly flawed, sometimes crazy. Vic is quite simply unapologetically real and whole in his personal chaos from drugs to curb his psychic ability, which is a lot to handle. Jacob is perfectly committed to Vic and accepts him as-is wholeheartedly, in fact he celebrates Vic's true self and enjoys him. He's protective of him almost to a fault and Vic finally asserts himself to address that balance. Both characters grow in these stories, supporting characters are well fleshed out and distinctive. The bad guys are unique and drive the mystery easily within the paranormal structure.

After two stories, you feel like you know these guys personally. I can't wait for more and hope to learn a lot more about them in the future.

I'm so glad I waited to get a copy of this from the library instead of purchasing Kindle copies of the two. I would have cursed and spit at money wasted!

It's not that the stories were bad. They weren't. However the pacing was off for me (they are really quite short) and if I'm going to read erotica, it's important for me to find the descriptions of the characters slightly attractive, which I didn't.

Seriously, if there weren't so many descriptions of Jacob's muscles, and if there were more ghost and psychic stuff that was drawn-out nice and slowly and creepily, I'd be singing a different tune. But, within the first chapter the lead and his "love interest" were rutting at a retirement party...so, no... "Si, no" was a bit too deus ex machina and what was up with Carolyn's ability having an "equivalent exchange" aspect while no one else's did? Bah.

So this is the first two books in this series. Book one,Among the Living, is a novella. Introducing us to Victor and his psychic abilities. Of course we also meet Jacob the hot "stiff".

Criss Cross draws us deeper into this world filled with psycops. With a little help from his psychic friends, ghosts and hot lover -Victor saves himself from a psychotic doctor trying to use him to control ghosts.

Oh drool! Exactly what I like most. People being people. Even in crazy situations. Even with "alternate" lifestyles. Even with psychic powers. Wait. Especially with psychic powers. God-like psychics who solve everything on their own are boring. Vic is a cop just trying to get by, and maybe someday find someone to love.

And what do I like even more in books like this? Authors who do it right.

This is a good one. A little thin - the book is basically two novellas together - but still very, very good. I devoured it!

Now I'm going out to get more of this series. *nods*

Very interesting set of characters, contains explicit male/male erotica. The psycop of the title is a man who is a medium (he sees ghosts). Ms. Price has created a fascinating and well-drawn world set in current times, but definitely an alternate universe to our own. Good speculative fiction mixed with good gay fiction -- the relationships between all of the characters develops and deepens over the course of the novels. Highly recommended.

Contains two short stories, this book is pretty light and easy to digest. It didn't take long for me to finish. It's not hardcore sleuth/police procedural. The mystery is not really deep. I do like the main characters. Victor and Jacob are cute together (though they cannot top my favorite gay couples in gay sleuth books: Adrien and Jake :p). I think I'll probably buy the next book as well (which contains the rest 2 stories). More of 3.5 stars

Well. After tearing through the Channeling Morpheus series, I guess I'm just set on reading all of JCP's books.

First, I gotta say, I've never been a huge fan of paranormal stories. They're okay, but usually leave me going, "Ehhhh...." Not the case at all with this series. I found it (amazingly) believable, well written, hot, tense, funny... It's a fantastic read and I can't wait to finish the series.

This book is the first in a three book series of great books. Vic and his lover Jacob are the two main characters. Vic is fairly messed up from his training in ESP and his ability to see ghosts. He is half of a Paranormal Investigation Team. The other half of the team is a non-psychic detective to balance things. Jacb is any gay man's wet dream while Vic is a skinny pill popper that excels at his job. The stories are quick reads and the sex is hot.

Among the Living was not quite as awesome and amazing as I remember it being the first time. Criss Cross was just as good, though. Can't wait to finish my re-read so I can get to GhosTV! I feel like I've been waiting for it forever.

*Note - I made a work friend read this book and she LOVED it. I've gotten her hooked. Please add some points to my Peer Pressure Wench meter.

a fun and well written read. Surprises after every turn, well developed characters, that you could believe their world was real. Reading a book with a happy (as much as life can offer) ending is a reward in it's self. This is a book about the future and the uses a psychic and non-psychic police to solve crimes. It was believable and what more do you want from fiction anyway?
