MARTINA'S AUGUST CHARACTER ALPHABET PARADE UPDATE - 4/10I just finished Ghouls Gone Wild (Ghost Hunter Mysteries #4) by Victoria Laurie (★★★★). Technically this series is paranormal mystery rather than PNR/UF, but this category is often included as a subcategory of PNR so there you go. The series is about M.J. Holliday, a psychic medium & ghost-buster and her flamboyantly gay business partner, Gilley. In each book M.J. and Gilly tackle a new haunting problem of some sort. In this book, they're in Scotland shooting a ghost-busting TV show when they run into the strongest and scariest ghosts they've ever encountered - a witch and her sisters who were murdered during the Black Plague. These ghosts aren't just causing mischief - they're out to avenge their deaths by killing the descendents of their murderers, of which poor Gilley just happens to be!! Can M.J. shut-down the witches and save Gilley before they get to him?
I love this series and this book was one of the better ones so far! I'll definitely be picking up the next one, "Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls" scheduled for release December 2010.

Ok, I admit, Summer of the Dragon is not PNR--but I STILL love the silly book. Its one of Elizabeth Peters myriad mystery/romance books that has more than a bit of humour in it. I loved the Hero--the heroine (DJ, no one ever called her by her name, IF they even knew what the initials stood for) asks him at one point if he has something wrong with his spine as he is always leaning against things. I mean, come on, who can resist a romance where the love interest asks that, right? :o)

Well, I changed my H/I/J from Gotcha to The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. This is one of my "non-PNR/UF" books this month. Despite the title The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is non-fiction. Its the story of the HeLa Cell line that is used in a lot of medical research. Henrietta Lacks was a young (31 years old), poor Black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951. Prior to her death, the doctors of Johns Hopkins Hospital had harvested some of her cancer cells and, for the first time ever, they were able to keep the cells alive. Almost 60 years after her death, those cells still live. This is the story of one writer's almost obsession with finding out the true story about HeLa, and the effects on not only the medical world but on the family left behind.
While not an easy book to read, it does a very good job of showing the mind set of many medical researchers, and shows that those mind sets are still with us, since at least several of the experiments were still going on as late as the 1990's.

★★★ 3,5 stars (full review)* no spoilers *
Let me say: I feel guilty about giving it only 3,5 stars. But I just couldn’t round it up to a full four, because that way the book would get the same rating as Kaderin’s book. Or the books about the Woede. Or all the books about the Wroth brothers. And frankly: those books were better than this one. It’s hard to pinpoint a reason, but I guess it’s because those books felt more heartfelt, if that makes any sense.
Malkom is one of the most interesting heroes of the series. He had a serious Zsadist vibe going on. But I had a hard time connecting with Carrow. The whole 'this party girl is really vulnerable inside'-message was a bit too obvious. And just when Cole started compensating this with some typical IAD-heroine snarkiness, she would also turn up the sap level. Argh...
All in all: still very enjoyable (hey it's Cole!) but not as good as the earlier books in the series.
And Ann (aka Iftcan) you have to read this book. The hero has a cleft chin. As does the guy on the cover. You'll love it! :)
