SK is one of the very few authors I trust not to let me down when I try something new, so I can relax when I start reading instead of holding back a little and having to assess whether or not its good.
I tried pacing UTD, reading just half an hour or so, but broke down and did an allnighter near the middle. Am having to use alot of self-restraint right now :)
Just finished Night Shift now I'm onto "Blaze Wyndham" an old-school bodice-ripper. So far it's umm...ok.
I just finished The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove. Now I can start
. I have been anxiously awaiting to read this for some time now.
I'm almost done reading The Gunslinger Surprise surprise. It is the book of the month after all. LOL. :D
I'd read the original version a few years ago but I'm glad to jump into our Dark Tower book of the month selections.
Reading The Girl Who Played With Fire right now. It's okay, I don't love it. Will be reading The Drawing of the Three for next month's group read. I decided to skip The Gunslinger, couldn't find my copy. Love the DT series and looking forward to the reread...
Oh, wow...you skipped The Gunslinger, the book that started it all..? I understand that you couldn't find your copy, but I wouldn't be able to do that.
Dustin wrote: "Oh, wow...you skipped The Gunslinger, the book that started it all..? On my second reread of DT I read The Gunslinger last, which was kind of a cool way to do it. Something different anyway...

There were a few of the stories that I loved like Pop Art. But for the most part I don't think his short stories compare to his full length stories. I haven't read Horns but I have read Heart-Shaped Box and it was really good. I think all his stories were well written but most of them just didn't strike the cord. I hated the bug boy one. I don't think I finished it. And on the first one 'Best New Horror' I was a little more interested in reading the 'Button Boy' story in the story than the actual story but it was really good.
Hope you like Under the Dome. I loved that book.
I'm in the middle of Dracula and suprised at how much I am loving it. I usually hate classics. I've been leary of vampires because I don't like the tween vampire love crap thats been so popular lately so I'm very new to vampire books. This is probably the first other than the Sookie Stackhouse books that I've read. I love how dark it is. Vampires aren't supposed to be boyfriends and emo. They're supposed to rip your head off.And its interesting to finally see where most of the mythology and pop culture stuff on vampires comes from. There were things I didn't even know were parodying Dracula until I started reading it.
Bram Stoker was a (almost) washed up theatrical producer when he wrote "Dracula" - Needless to say, the book was a sensation -- In Britain's version of "banning a book" it was even "denounced from the Pulpit" by the Archbishop.I love the book because, as you point out, virtually every pop culture reference to vamps comes originally from this one book. One of the very first movies ever made of "Dracula" was called "Nosferatu" (they couldn't get the rights to the name from Stoker's widow) -- At any rate, "Nosferatu" is one HELL of a scary movie - it's a silent, but I had nightmares for years!
Bondama wrote: "Bram Stoker was a (almost) washed up theatrical producer when he wrote "Dracula" - Needless to say, the book was a sensation -- In Britain's version of "banning a book" it was even "denounced from ..."I've never seen Nosferatu although I am a big fan of the Dracula with Gary Oldman (sexy much). On another note, I love the power Dracula has over the wolves. So cool.
I love Nosferatu. I didn't know that about the title change. I keep feeling like now that I've gotten through the story I need to pick The New Annotated Dracula back up and read the footnotes and essays. BTW, I was watching a show on the origins of Dracula on The History Channel. Weird question, but does anyone know of any nonfiction books about Lady Bathory? I could only find one historical fiction title on GR and she's a weird, twisted possible influence on the story of Dracula.
3 quarters of the way through Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. This is the 4th time Ive read it, and still loving it. Hope to finish the whole series before the movie comes out.
Bondama, ever seen Shadow of the Vampire? It was a pretty cool movie about the filming of Nosferatu.
Yes, Chris --I certainly did - the minute I heard it was being made, I couldn't imagine ANYONE but Willem Defoe in the part of Nosferatu!
Rachel - there is an excellent book about Countess Bathory, but I have been completely unable to find it! - It's not "The Blood Countess" and I can't find it on Amazon or GR - I read it about 5 yrs ago, and it was truly, truly chilling BECAUSE it was non-fiction. If I ever run across it again, I'll let you know..
Bondama wrote: "Rachel - there is an excellent book about Countess Bathory, but I have been completely unable to find it! - It's not "The Blood Countess" and I can't find it on Amazon or GR - I read it about 5 yrs..."Thanks Bondama! Do you remember what title was? I might go to the library this week.

Coincidentally, I recently started to read it for the first time, and I am also surprised by how much I like it. Stoker's writing is amazingly descriptive...and vivid!
Rachel, for the life of me I can't remember the title -- One of the things I remember most is the fact that Elizabeta, got the idea that the blood of virgins would make her eternally youthful from spreading a small amt. of blood on her skin, and watching her skin go "red and rosy." yerghhh
The weirdest part about the Countess of Bathory is that she was distantly related to Vlad Tepes (or, as immortalized by Stoker, Dracula)- Truth!!
Well, Felina, I hate to disillusion you, but I once heard the silent movie version of Nosferatu as (sorry, guys) a giant penis with teeth!
Bondama wrote: "Well, Felina, I hate to disillusion you, but I once heard the silent movie version of Nosferatu as (sorry, guys) a giant penis with teeth!"Ha ha. I'll try it anyways.

Infamous Lady: The True Story of Countess Erzsébet Báthory
Countess Dracula: Life and Times of Elisabeth Bathory, the Blood Countess
Until I can get to my record of books checked out at our local library, I want to say that it's the first one --"Infamous Lady . . . Even if it isn't, it looks like a good read!
Rachel wrote: "Thanks Stacie! I think I'm gonna see if the library has the first book."You're welcome. I love 'shopping' for books almost as much as I love reading them :)
I finished Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal last night. What an amazing read. I laughed out loud many times. Now I am reading The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements.

I am reading The Dark Tower 3; The Wastelands. I just finished The Drawing of the Three about a week ago.
I'm just about finished with The Unquiet by John Connolly. Not sure what I'm going to read next. I have the next two books in the Charlie Parker saga on my shelf but I think I may be getting a little burned out on that character.

But now I feel like the ending is pretty much ruined.
Brandon -- John Connelly has a new book, "The Gates"(of Hell are Opening, And Don't You Want a Peek?) that is absolutely hilarious. And it's nothing like anything of his that I've read before -- I would recommend this one to virtually everyone I know! And yes, I do think that Nilofer's posting was a Spoiler if I ever saw one. -- But DO read the book anyway, Dawn, it's well worth it.
Dawn wrote: "Don't you think that might be considered an UTD spoiler? I've never read UTD and had planned to... But now I feel like the ending is pretty much ruined."I was thinking the same thing as I read that post. I know that I would have been pissed off if I would not have just finished reading UTD a couple of months ago.
I've deleted and reposted Nilofer's comment (again) with spoiler warning. Nilofer, when you see this, PLEASE remember that when you talk about book plots or main points or details of a book, you need to mark it as a spoiler. This is the second time this morning I've had to "edit" a post of yours for this reason.

I haven't read any of Joe Hill's full length works, so unfortunately can't compare. Hope to do so soon, have heard a lot of good things about Horns.
___________UTD SPOILER__________
Finished UTD last week, started slow then took on speed like a runaway train, ending in a crash-bang. Loved the characters, and the ending, but couldn't get my head around the aliens thing, seemed like an easy way out, to explain something inexplicable, like it was "all a dream". Wasn't expecting Barbie to survive so long, I must admit.
________End Spoiler___________
Going to reread Drawing of the Three for the book read this month, introduces so many important themes of the DT world."
I quit reading The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements this afternoon. It was like reading a textbook from when I was in engineering school. I got about half way through it.I have decided to reread The Gunslinger. It has been revised since the last time I read it. I didn't like it the first time.
