I read When Janey Comes Marching Home: Portraits of Women Combat Veterans by Laura Browder.
My job is representing veterans, and I wanted to learn more about women veterans, since they often have additional/different issues than men.

25.10 - For the first portion of this task, I read Stolen by Lucy Christopher. This book is about Stockholm Syndrome, featuring a girl who is kidnapped and taken to the Australian Outback by a guy who has been stalking her for years. Creepy, but an interesting read.
For the second portion of this challenge I read The Wicked Heart by Christopher Pike. God, I loved this book. Serial killing teenager, evil Nazi spirits, the beginning of the internets/internet-y drama.

I completed task 25.5 - Helen's Task - Share the Summer Love .A - Genesis by Bernard Beckett
One of my favorite genres is Dystopian literature. In my high school Theory of Knowledge class we read titles such as More's Utopia, Huxley's Brave New World and Orwell's 1984 which sparked a curiosity within me about the future of humankind. Genesis looks at a future society in the year 2075 after plague, war, and artifical intelligence. Told in a conversational style (as opposed one filled with action) it raises the question of what makes us human. This read was quick (160 pages) but the thoughts will stay with you. 5 stars.
B - Roommates: My Grandfather's Story by Max Apple
Another favorite genre is memoirs. People lead such interesting lives that sometimes you don't need fiction to keep you entertained. This is the story of Max and his Grandfather Rocky who lives to the old age of 106. Rocky is a major presence in Max's life throughout his childhood, college years, and when Max starts his own family. It's a sweet story of love across generations. 4 stars.

Blindness by Jose Saramago, 326 page. I've read his short work before. But this one has a stronger impact both when I was reading and after I read it. Once I grew used to his writing style in the first chapter, words and prose were a vivid and powerful art form. No, I am not exaggerating; it is not hard to read or over the top kind of book. Be petient when reading the first chapter, then you won't be disappointed.

Review:
This was a very interesting look into what our future could be like with environmentalism - reduce, reuse, recycle - taken to the extreme. Although this is a fictitious dystopian novel, the outcome of a paper-free world was depicted in a very plausible way by Clifford. This book confirmed my love of the written word & books in their paper form. I really enjoyed this!

I enjoyed this book. It was one of my favorites for the season. The book jumps around in time and unfolds the story in a beautiful way. Oscar and Lola and great characters that stay with you past the end of the book. I plan on recommending this to my book club at work.

The main character in Thank You for All Things by Sandra Kring is an intelligent, young, 14 year old. She fits the above qualities because she she is home schooled and very curious about lots of things. She is studious, she analyzes not only her school not only her studies but her family that is a mystery to her. She gains knowledge and understanding about her family that her mother hides from her to protect her. She is very aware of what people are feeling and how to speak to them. Lastly, she does some meditating/prayer in order to seek the truth.

Part A: Food in the title: The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
Part C: Food-Related Non-fiction: Women Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything. This is a non-fiction book about creating a better relationship with food by focusing on the causes of overeating instead of blaming the food all the time.
My contribution to the party therefore, will be a delicious organic blueberry pie with a lattice crust. The pie will be sweet and delicious, but only take a piece if you really need it! Now that's the hard part!

25.5 Share the Summer Love A – Little Children by:Tom PerrottaContemporary Fiction with a satirical tone. I love to read contemporary novels, specifically satirical ones. I love the idea of using wit to show us something about our human nature that perhaps we hadn’t considered before. It encourages me to not take myself too seriously. This book was particularly interesting b/c I didn’t find one single likeable character in the entire book, yet I still enjoyed it.
B – Linger by: Maggie Stiefvater. Young Adult Fiction. I continue to find myself drawn to many young adult novels. I think perhaps it is the ability to see myself in the characters…it is fun to relive the exuberance and extreme emotions one feels at a young age. This book did not live up to my expectations after “Shiver.” I felt like she wrote the characters as such clichés that it was really hard to identify with any of them.

Finished another Task today: Task 15.3 (Books and Blogs). For this task, I read Fruits Basket, Volume 1 by Natsuki Takaya.This book was featured in the Blog "Anime Fans On-line". The review is featured here:

My review:
I don’t usually read Blogs on a regular basis but sometimes scan links as I find them and I happened upon this Blog. I’ve heard of Manga but had no idea what it was or why it differed from Graphic Novels and thought I’d give this book a try. I chose Fruits Basket because it’s a series often mentioned in the Anime Blogs. There are umpteen volumes in this series as well, so I thought it would give me an indication of good Manga and what it's about.
Well…..Manga is interesting. Using Fruits Basket Vol. 1 as a reference, it’s a kind of Graphic novel that differs in that it’s aimed at a younger crowd, the characters are sweet, kind and caring. This particular book features Tohru Honda, an orphan living on her own, who is befriended by a family who has been cursed. The curse stipulates that if a family member is hugged by someone of the opposite sex (and not cursed themselves), the family member will turn into a specific animal of the Chinese Zodiac. In this volume we meet a few of the animals and a family member who wants to be part of the Zodiac. He’s a cat, an animal that was tricked at the time that the Zodiac was put into place and, therefore, wasn’t around to be assigned a Zodiac “slot”. He’s desperately trying to beat a family member using martial arts. Legend has it that if/when he wins a fight, the Cat will become a Zodiac sign.
This story is really sweet. There’s young romance, sweet cheerfulness (too much sweetness….it becomes quite sappy). There’s a mysterious story unfolding and interesting characters being introduced.
Reading Manga is….interesting. One starts at the back of the book and reads right-to-left, sometimes top-to-bottom of a page, sometimes not. It takes awhile to figure it out (at least it took me awhile) but once figured out, it’s really quite simple to follow.
Now that I know what Manga is about, I won’t be reading any more. It’s an interesting concept but it’s too young for me. I enjoyed this book as a trip to a genre I haven’t read before and, although I can see why Manga is popular, it’s not for me.

I read Henry Huggins, then recommended it to the little girl I babysit. I read some of it with her before nap time, and her mom read the rest with her. The dish my husband and I take places to share a lot is fried rice, so the cookbook I red for part D is an easy Asian food cookbook. I copied down a bunch of the recipes—they looked really good. I read The Conscience of a Liberal by Paul Krugman.
The author and I are alike, in that we're both liberals and I agree with most of his explanations of how the political landscape has been influenced by economics and vice versa. The biggest difference is that he's an economist and focuses more on economics - my focus tends to be more on law.
