Summer Challenge 2010 Completed Tasks (do NOT delete any posts in this thread)

A. Have the same title but are written by different authors
I read Just Desserts by Mary Daheim and Just Desserts by Barbara Bretton. I enjoyed them both but liked Barbara Bretton's the best.

A. I read Brothers and Keepers by John Edgar Wideman. I thought this book was phenomenal - the intensity, the changing styles and voices, it was just excellent. 5 stars. The book has a very strong sense of place. I highly recommend it.
B. I am very lucky to have 3 great siblings, 2 brothers and a sister. They are very patient with me (and each other) about the many things we've done with our lives - some of us living far from Michigan, where we grew up, some closer to home. We get together and act like we're kids again, wrestling around as a greeting instead of saying hello and playing hours of board games instead of talking about boring adult stuff.

a. Read about Abe Lincoln. I read Abraham Lincoln: Vampire HunterbySeth Grahame-Smith. I was a little leery about this, because it just seems so silly, but Mr. Grahame-Smith really makes you feel like it was plausible.
b. Read an book that takes place in Chicago. I read Irreplaceable by Stephen Lovely(A GoodReads Author). The heart recipient lives in Chicago.
I really liked both of the books for this task!

part A: I read Tana French's second book, The Likeness, which takes place in Ireland, a place I've always wanted to visit and never gotten too
part B: I just finished reading The Girl with the Dragon Tatto by Stieg Larsson which was originally written in Swedish (I read the english version)

But I did finish 2 tasks:
10.1 Roll The Dice I rolled 165 and let me tell you finding a book short enough was NOT easy! I ended up with Peter Pan by J M Barrie at 172 pages.
10.10 Great Minds Think Alike
Laura was reading My Cousin Rachel by Daphne DuMaurier when I went looking and it had always been on my To Read List so I took it as a sign and was so happy!

Two more tasks done this weekend.
15.9 - I read Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston. That I am strange is no secret, but I also like to think I am remarkable as well :)
The main character in the book, Kelley, is an aspiring actress living in NYC who discovers that she is a faerie princess. So I live in NYC and that's about where the similarities end. I guess I sympathize with Kelley in that I also get nervous when I have to perform and I have always been a drama queen, but I don't have any hidden powers or wings or pointed ears or anything.
30.5 I chose A & C
A. I read The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender. It was a magic realism book about a girl who discovers that she can taste all of the feelings of the person who cooked whenever she eats, which actually turns about to be more of a curse than a blessing. I really enjoyed this and Highly recommend.
C. I also chose to read The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan, which I also enjoyed. It definitely opened my eyes to a few things, and I already knew others, because I am defintely concerned about what I eat as well as how it affects the environment. I know that I will try to make smarter choices and eat locally.

Male Author:
Framed! by Malcolm Rose
Female Author:
The Angel of Death by Alane Ferguson
Both of these were good page-turning mysteries. Framed is set in an alternative reality and centers on a teenager whose job is forensic science in that society. The Angel of Death is set in Silverton, Colorado where Cassie acts as the assistant to her father, the coroner.

10.4 Roll the Dice (+/- 10 pp)-Rolled "263" - book 258pp
City of Thieves by David Benioff - READ 7.9.10
My Rating: ★★★★★
I didn't want to put this book down. Benioff is a marvelous storyteller. He hooked me from the onset, when he cast Lev and Kolya together, the looter and the deserter, and sent them out on an impossible mission. I had no choice but to follow along as they faced danger in the cold, snowy landscape of WWII Russia. Despite this being a Holocaust novel, confronting issues of hunger, cannibalism, and murder, I found many affirmative moments filled with laughter, love, and friendship. This was a remarkable book!

*Tales from Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett - READ 7.11.10
My Rating: ★★★½
One of my favorite summer songs is Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett. Margaritas are my favorite summer drink, actually they're my favorite year round drink. This song reminds me of blue skies, beach and flip flops. Sadly, my favorite margarita flip flops had to be retired this summer.

5.1 Heat Wave: Sizzling Sixteen by Janet Evanovich. I rated it 3*, but is was mostly because I've enjoyed so many of this series. This one not so much. Not the worst of the batch, but it was a little blah.
10.3 Same Place, Same Time: On May 23 I went to page 7 of the online users and found Jan, who was reading The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America by Timothy Egan. So I read it too. 4* I enjoy natural disaster books that go into the whys and what happened afterwards.
15.5 The Great Authors were Great Readers: I chose Robert B. Parker and read Spare Change.
Parker had picked William Faulkner's The Bear. I had to read it in a collection. Three Famous Short Novels: Spotted Horses Old Man The Bear. It is the first Faulkner I've ever been able to struggle completely through. The man's river of language is is full flood.
15.9 He Who Knows Others Is Wise: The Party Planner by David Tutera.
I love to plan parties for people--I don't like to go to them, but planning them is so much fun. David Tutera apparently had/has a tv show about party planning and this book is based on that. He is obviously richer than I and goes to a different kind of party than I do. But we both like to have others enjoy the experience.
20.4 Always the Bridesmaid: For my 6th challenge I will give candy--and the best candy worth giving is chocolates so I read The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse by Robert Rankin.

Blogs have an important role in the world of books and reading today...they've even been the inspiration for books themselves (EXAMPLE: Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen). For this task read a book that has been featured on your favorite book/reading related blog. When you post this task include a link to the blog and a review of the book.
Ladies Living Healthy here on Goodreads
Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman
Excellent on facts, stridently (and annoyingly vegan). I believe in balance. I don't want to go from one extreme (Atkins) to. vegan. The audio was well read but made the authors even seem more preachy. They admitted that the swears and the startling title was for commercialism. I actually like those parts. OOH and ladies I may be fat but I'm definitively not a moron!!

Petra, I wasn't a fan of Night either, but for different reasons. I didn't find anything there that hadn't been written before (and in a better style) so I don't quite understand why that book stands out among all the others. Is it because more people heard of it because of Oprah? I think that you are the first person whom I've found who wasn't blown away by this read.

Thanks, Sera. I agree with you. There was nothing new in the book. Ophrah may have had something to do with the popularity. Who kows? She's put a lot of people in the spotlight. If this book gets people started on reading about the Holocaust, then it's a good thing.

I think it stands out because of the author. Elie Wiesel spent his lifetime tracking down Nazi war criminals.

A. I read Every Secret Thing - My Family, My Country by Gillian Slovo
B. I love the fact that I have such a big family. We don't all meet up together very often and I love when we do because there is never a dull moment!

I finished
10.10, Great Minds Think Alike, with
The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells
On pg 8, Wendy's list from Outlander
I had only seen movie versions- really liked the book- super creepy
15.5, Great Authors Were Great Readers, with
Kate Atkinson 's Case Histories: A Novel and
The Railway Children by E. Nesbit
25.5, Helen's Summer Love, with
Favorite Genre I: Crime fiction- The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson
Genre II: Travel- Lost in My Own Backyard: A Walk in Yellowstone National Park by Tim Cahill
I like crime fiction for strong story arcs, gutsy characters, and lots of action. TGWKTHN wasn't the strongest of the trilogy, but did deliver. I think Salander is one of the most interesting characters to come along. In general, Larsson was a little too wordy and tangential, but his plots were inventive and his characters were intriguing. I especially like Scandinavian fiction- and Larsson's success has created so much more interest in read-alikes that many more books are now translated. I also like Karin Fossum, Henning Mankell, and Jo Nesbø
I enjoy travel books because the next best thing to going on vacation is reading about a destination, and I always learn something. There's a little science, a little gossip, a little humor, and a lot of nature in Tim Cahill's book. He creates a great sense of place- something essential for a good travel book. I will read more by Cahill. I also enjoy Will Ferguson and Bill Bryson
30.1, Ms Anderson's Birthdays and Birthmonths with
A. June: South America: The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann
B. Tuesday- Alternate History: Farthing by Jo Walton
I really liked Z- Fawcett is a larger-than-life character and Grann has captured his obsession
Farthing was interesting- it starts out as a mystery- then one starts to see the effects of England's 1941 pact with Hitler

TAYSHAS High School Reading List Award - Books chosen by librarians to encourage reluctant readers to read about current events.
I'm Down: a memoir by Mishna Wolff (Goodreads Author - 3.5 stars)
This was an unusual and zany memoir about a white girl, whose father thinks he's black. He raises his daughters to identify with the African American culture, and becomes quite upset when they become interested in participating in what he deems to be white activities. I laughed throughout the book, because it reminded me of the the movie "The Jerk". In the long run, however, I felt that the book was more about economic discrepancies than ethnic assimilation.

I read Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern.
This book was funny-my 17 year old thought it was pretty good too! My dad passed away 17 years ago, so I never got to have much of a "grown up" relationship with him. But I can certainly relate to what the author went thru having a dad just blurt out whatever he thought without censoring his words first. My dad had a great sense of humor-that's what I remember most about him and would always show his love to us, even when he was mad.

A. Contemporary Adult Romance-

B. Fairy Tales and Retellings-

C. What can I say I am a hopeless romantic!
I thought that Vision in White was a good book. It definitely made me think twice about a guy who can read...I fell in love with the characters of the quartet of girls and the leading male. (Even though I would never get with a guy like him.) This book made me wish that I had friends like these girls and also appreciate my mother.
Violet Eyes was a cute and sweet story. I was a very easy read. (Probably because it is a YA novel.) I had never heard of this fairy tale but it was definitely cute. I wouldn't consider it the best book I have ever read but it was definitely a good book that I might read again.

10.6 - Stand Up For Your Rights
On August 6, 1965 US President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law a significant events in the civil rights movement. In honor of this event let's read...A book (fiction or non-fiction) where someone faces discrimination (racial, gender, religious, age, sexual orientation etc.).
May 16, 2010 Message #17: For task...basically this if you can give at least one example of how the character or person was discriminated against its fine.
I read: Nomad (2010) by Ayaan Hirsi Ali (Hardcover, 277 pages) The sub-title is: “From Islam to America: A Personal Journey Through the Clash of Civilizations”. From the dustcover: “Ayaan Hirsi Ali tells of coming to America to buid a new life, an ocean away from the death threats made to her by European Islamists…” In the first chapter, Ayaan Hirsi Ali discusses the security arrangements she required so that she could visit her dying father in a London Hospital. This is certainly an incidence of “discrimination”. The motive behind the “discrimination” is that Ayaan Hirsi Ali has rejected the faith of her childhood, that is, rejected Islam. Ayaan Hirsi Ali discusses the status of women under traditional Islam. The status, in brief is: Not Good. Overall, I found “Nomad” to be very well written and extremely interesting. 5 stars.

The song is: Silly Love Songs by Paul McCartney and Wings
The relationship between the two: This book is about the 1968 hoax which claimed that Paul McCartney was dead and that the Beatles had strategically placed clues in and on the cover of their albums. According to the story, McCartney had died in a car crash in 1966 and the Beatles had replaced him with a look alike named Billy Shearers.
The song reminds me of summer because radio stations began playing it during my prom weekend in 1976 and continued to play it all summer long!
