L.J. (ljsellers) | 17 comments I recently read Before I Go to Sleep about a woman with anterograde amnesia and found it strangely compelling. Although it reminded me of See Jane Run by Joy Fielding, which was terrific.

Now I'm reading Do They Know I'm Running?: A Novel, a thriller about immigrants crossing the border.

I agree, but I really ended up liking this book a lot.

Georgia | 554 comments Just finished Unbroken by Laura Hillebrand. Excellent book. I recommend it to all as it is a true story of a
person who lived thru such terrible things during WWII, but who had guts, courage, perseverance, HOPE, etc.
A wonderful true story about survival and how terrible
war is. Learned alot from this book. As I mentioned
before I am now reading the Eye of the Red Tsar. It has a wonderful start and I am anxious to get back to it. See you all!!!!!!!!!!

Georgia | 554 comments Hi Julie, saw that you are reading Vince Flynn for the
first time. Great writer. I have read the Act of Treason which is a thriller and American Assassin which is important as it is the beginning of Mitch Rapp. I haven't read the Affair by Lee Child. Similarities? But love all of his books too.

Georgia | 554 comments Try Dawn Patrol by Don Winslow. What a total surprise. At first I didn't think I would like it as it started off so differently than most books. It was great and now I will try to get to Savages.

Georgia | 554 comments Janeen, you asked how one figures out what to read next. Well, I have bags of books in my closets that I bought when the library has sales, also I belong to 2 book clubs which suggests different books. The books I
buy at the sales are always of authors whom I love or are mentioned by many of you on this site. Also my book clubs usually are of authors I have never read.
And I LOVE to Read.

Libby Just finished PORTRAIT OF A SPY by Daniel Silva. Elegant writing as usual, but not a great entry in the series. Also read and enjoyed DAMAGE CONTROL by Denise Hamilton. Quick read. Well done. And just started Olin Steinhauer's THE TOURIST. Slow going so far, but I just started.

Georgia, it sounds like you need a library yourself or a study instead of having them in bags. My in-laws apparently have bags of books in their basement. I just finished one they gave me and I left with another book. Always a book in the middle of a series. Bah! Anyway, I should add you so I can see everything that you read. ;)

Absolutely loving Vince Flynn's style...Just a fun book to read. Plan on reading the rest of the series for sure :)I tried Lee Child's first book in his Jack Reacher series Killing Floor (Jack Reacher, #1) by Lee Child but got really annoyed by the fact Jack didn't call a lawyer or anybody at all when arrested and then set up to be killed in jail where he shouldn't have been. Didn't seem very realistic to me. May end up finishing it someday.

Russell Brooks (russellbrooks) I'm halfway through the detachmentThe Detachment by Barry Eisler. I've gotten attached to his stories and since it features John Rain and Ben Treven (a merger of two of his heroes from previous books) I couldn't pass it up.

message 4014: by Elli (new)

Elli | 228 comments Am enjoying Keeper of Just Causes by a Danish author, the name of which escapes me at the moment. I'm about half through. A well respected, but not well-liked member of the police force goes through a terrible situation where his partner is permanently disabled and a third officer was killed. Adjusting to this beaurocratic nightmare surrounding the job is next to impossible when he is allowed back to work again. In a frantic effort to fit both the demands of the department and the powers that be and keep the guy on, a department is created. An assistant (and What An Assistant!) is even provided. And then the real twists and turns of the story begin. And, so far, it's a good one. And there seems to be something extra human about this story....

Anna | 371 comments I've just finished Gently Does It by Alan Hunter. I watched a few of the Inspector Gently series on television which I think are wonderful. So, I read the first in the series and somehow it didn't quite come off for me. I liked the way Gently was portrayed as a pipe smoking, peppermint cream munching detective and it was very evocative of the period. It's not often I say I actually prefer the television series to the book but this is a case in point.

Lorraine (saanichlori) I just finished A Dedicated Man by Peter Robinson - the 2nd in the Inspector Banks series, situated in the Yorkshire Downs. This was a good novel about a wealthy academic who left home one evening to visit a friend, and who's body is found the next morning buried in a field. His wife and friends don't have motives and the man has no enemies. A young girl in the village thinks she can find the murderer without informing the police, and her investigation ends in a bad way. I found this book even better than the first one, Gallows View

Jan (booklover777) | 66 comments I just finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. I read it because it's another selection for my book club. I foresee a great discussion. The author did an amazing job of compiling all the different threads that make up this story of HeLa cells and presenting it in a readable format that doesn't let you put it down. Henrietta, Deborah and other Lackses come alive and we feel their frustration of trying to understand what happened to them. As a society we owe Henrietta Lacks recognition for her unwitting contribution of her tissue. This book is a good step towards that recognition. Even though it's nonfiction I recommend it highly to this group.

Elli | 228 comments Finished the Keeper of Lost Causes. Lost Causes, not Just Causes as I thought it was. And I liked it. And the ending was fabulous. The evil caused by awfulness that really shouldn't have happened but in being allowed to do so, helped lead brilliance into insanity...met the humanness of those trying to wade their way into real solutions and ensuing justice...met, collided, and life promised to go on from there... Now it's time to start Lumen next I grab a book!

Jannene | 775 comments I just finished Prince of Hazel and Oak (Shadowmagic Book 2) by John Lenahan . I really enjoyed this book as much as the previous one in this series. It was an enjoyable read and the action made the pages turn quickly. (It obviously isn't a mystery but it was still very good.) Now to finish The Lincoln Lawyer (Mickey Haller, #1) by Michael Connelly .

Genine Franklin-Clark (suz83yq) Hunger Games: Okay, okay, I grumbled about having been "forced" (by all the rave reviews) to get this book (I ended up getting the NOOK trilogy)and began reading it reluctantly. I loved it. Damn. I was under the weather for a couple of days and all I did was read this and sleep. All you ravers out there ... feel free to say "Told you so!"
Only two corrections (I've said before that I'm a grammar nut) - the use of "honing in on" instead of the correct "homong in on" and the consistent use of "staunch" instead of the correct "stanch". I know, I know, picky, picky, but to me seeing these things is like a music lover hearing flats - I don't look for them, they leap out at me. Aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, this book held my attention all the way. I've begun the second in the series,

I've been disappointed so many times by books with rave reviews that I'm a bit cautious about them now, but like you, was very pleased with Hunger Games ... one of those that I could NOT put down, in fact.

Just finished the second of the series and while I had some difficulty with the first few chapters, they went slow for me and seemed so much different than what I expected, once past that I loved the second book as well.

Now just waiting for the final book to come up on my hold list at the library.

I read some of them years ago when I lived in MT and thought they were rather exaggerated. I read them again several years after moving to KY and I *recognized* half the characters in the books. They seem lots more realistic since I've lived in the south.

Georgia | 554 comments Hi Jan, I read Henrietta Lacks also because our book club was reading it. It was OK we decided. Most of us liked the scientific part and the incredible continuance of the Hela Cells and what they have contributed to our good health. A school in Vancouver, Washington was recently named after her. How about that?
