Lorraine (saanichlori) A friend recommended Kate Atkinson's series about private detective Jackson Brodie to me, and I just finished the first in the series Case Histories. I was delighted to see that Masterpiece Mystery will be showing a three part miniseries on this book in two weeks' time. I will soon be reading the 2nd in the series " One Good Turn.

We watched the series on BBC Canada Jane. I thought it was fantastic, great cast, great chemistry and interesting stories.

This is my first Sandford book to read and I'm really enjoying it, I'm not a huge audio fan but I like to have one audio book for the car for the journey to and from work and as these books weren't available for the kindle in Ireland I went for the audio version, it's very good, keeping my interest a lot

Jan (booklover777) | 66 comments I finished The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler last night. It's over 500 pgs long and I read it in 2 days. The hype around this book is well deserved. Just when I thought I had it figured out along came another twist. I look forward to more from this writing duo from Sweden.

message 3959: by Margot (new)

Margot | 6 comments I just finished "Pirate King" by Laurie R. King. Mary Russell may never be as famous a character as her husband, but I enjoy her more. I read the book slowly so I could enjoy the erudition and humor all the more. It isn't much of a mystery, but who cares? I tried to read Tess Gerritsen's "The Surgeon," but it was too scary for me. My next book will be Deanna Raybourn's "The Dark Enquiry."

Thanks for mentioning this series. I will have to try it out. I thought Atkinson's Behind the Scenes at the Museum was very moving and readable. It was not exactly a mystery, however.

message 3962: by Eve (new)

Eve (eve_lyn) I finished The Lost Angel by Javier Sierra, about Noah's Ark and fallen angels. Good for fans of Dan Brown.

Big big love for all three of those books. My 11-year old is eating through them like candy now.

message 3964: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Ordover (aordover) I just finished The Map of Time, and, although I had mixed feelings about it, it did a great job of keeping my guessing, never knowing what to believe in from section to section.

message 3965: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 775 comments Just curious, how do you figure out what you are going to read next? Do you have a plan all mapped out? I always find it is a hard decision after I've finished a book. Do you just keep reading within the series and finish it then move on?

I posted this question on the group read but would be interested in other people's ideas.

message 3966: by omgbart (new)

omgbart | 28 comments I never read parts of a series back to back. I also never read two books by the same author in a row. I don't really have a plan and enjoy browsing through my unread books when deciding what to read next.

message 3967: by Elli (new)

Elli | 228 comments Well now I'm back to Keeper of just Causes, finished the Betrayal of Trust and really thought it was a good book! Probably the best of the J.P. Beaumont's that I've read!

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Just back from a library run yesterday and just finished Heart of Ice a new author for me. Cover is what got my attention, book was reasonably good although rather predictable. Not bad but not something I would keep to re-read.

The Vault and it was good to see what Wexford has been up to since his retirement. Now reading Pirate King and I have to say that so far I am finding it quite amusing.

Hi Jannene. I like to mix things up so I rarely read one series book after another. I also like to mix up genres, noir, historical, cozy. Sometimes I just need something light and sometimes I want something with depth. Actually I usually have more than one book going at a time.

I love the John Sandford books - Lucas Davenport as well as Virgil Flowers.

Shanghai Girls is the least favorite of mine from Lisa See, however I liked the sequel to Shanghai Girls better.

Enjoy!

message 3977: by T (new)

T (twoo) Finished The Zero Hour last night - took me longer than usual, and it's a big book!

Started Love You More this morning, one of my winnings through an Alex Kava contest. This one should go fast, less intense than Zero Hour.

Rhonda | 6 comments DarkMarket Cyberthieves, Cybercops and You by Misha Glenny
“Darkmarket is a lively account of how credit card crime is organized on the Internet and an engaging portrayal of some of the characters who are involved. It is a true crime story in the modern age, where young game-playing code cutters have taken the place of bank robbers—and where the information that identifies you is more likely to be stolen than your tangible property.”

Diane S ☔ | 438 comments Found The Pirate King very humorous, not your typical offering from King but good nonetheless. Just started The Affair and on pg. 5 Jack is thinking, "Or maybe I stood out because I was bigger and taller than anyone within a hundred yards" And they cast Tom Cruise. Utterly ridiculous.

This is one of my favorite mood series. I have to be in the mood for this type of book, slower, more literary and erudite, elegant and a bit mannered. A great change of pace after a surfeit of modern serial murderers.

Mark Stevens (writermarkstevens) | 13 comments Half way through "We All Fall Down," the new one from Michael Harvey. Chicago. An odd but interesting combination of street thug stuff and bio-medical worries. Also an odd but interesting mix of first and third person: can't remember the last time I've seen that.

message 3996: by [deleted user] (new)

I have been AWOL for a while... you have all been busily reading. I haven't had time for much reading at all, unfortunately.

I did finish The October Killings, which was enjoyable and if I find the next in the series I will check it out.
My review here

I also read the third Flavia de Luce story: A Red Herring Without Mustard. Just love these books.

message 3997: by Genine (new)

Genine Franklin-Clark (suz83yq) Case Histories:
I liked this book, and have already started reading One Good Thing, the next Jackson Brodie novel. I did, more than once, have to go back to remind myself who someone was (which case history was hers/his), and was wishing for a Dickens-like list of characters at the beginning of the book. That said, I found each case history engrossing; the author is a master of characterization.
Bonus: this book had been on my bookshelves for years, and just as I was finishing it, I read that it's being presented as one of a three-part miniseries on PBS - first episode airs October 16, I believe. Now I have to read the next book, One Good Thing, the next Jackson Brodie novel (it has also been on my bookshelves for quite a while.) AND, I've put the third, When Will There Be Good News? on hold at the library, Imagine hands rubbing together with pleasure.
