Deanne | 94 comments Reading Bones and Silence by Hill, never watched the TV series based on the books. Daziel seems like a nightmare of a boss, and Pascoe has my sympathy. However Daziel strikes me as the type of detective you wouldn't want investigating a murder you'd committed.

Susan Jo Grassi (susanjo) I'm currently reading The Murder of King Tut by James Patterson & Martin Dugard. It's very interesting. I saw the King Tut exhibit in Chicago in the early 70s when it toured America. What a fantastic deplay of opulence and he was a minor pharaoh.

Pete Morin | 61 comments Reading Liz Lipperman's debut novel, Liver Let Die, the first of the "Clueless Cook" series from Berkeley Prime Crime. Classic cozy murder mystery about an aspiring small town sports reporter who takes a job as a restaurant critic even though she can't cook a grilled cheese sandwich. Her first restaurant review, she dumps the pate de foie gras into her purse because she cant stomach the idea of trying it.

Am a little more than halfway through A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, wondering why no one at home or at school pushed me to read it when I was a young(er) voracious reader. Fabulous, wonderful, marvelous.

Just started A Capital Crime and it has sucked me right into the story. It's the 3rd in the series, but that doesn't seem to matter overly much. Takes place in post WWII London.

Growing up in the slums of Brooklyn in the early 1900s, but that description does not do it justice. I'm loving it. Give it a try.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10000 comments I finished The Scarpetta Factor by Patricia Cornwell; definitely not as good as the earlier books in the series. There's too much of the characters' (especially Kay, Lucy, and Benton) complaining and feeling sorry for themselves and too little plot development.

I noticed that it is the second book of the series. So, if I pick it up for reading and skipping the first book, would it make much difference?

I'm quite reluctant to start a series.

Jeff-- I read the second a looooong time after the first and it didn't suffer from my poor memory. There are repeat characters and developing relationships but it isn't necessary to have the first novel's back-story.

I say read it and enjoy. They're interesting glimpses into the NYPD of Roosevelt as well as the class and family systems of the day.

I agree. I was very disappointed with this one. I think Patricia Cornwell lost the plot when she brought Benton back from the dead.

Fon (fonv) | 2 comments I've decided to re-read some of the older Wexford series of Ruth Rendell before reading the new one just out. I had forgotten just what a really *good* writer she really is! It is a treat! Also, just finished "Case Histories" just ahead of the tv show on tonight. We'll see how Masterpiece does it!

message 4093: by T (new)

T (twoo) Finished Taylor Steven's debut novel The Informationist. Not as fast a read as I thought it would be, but it held my interest. I scanned some of the reviews of it and it's being compared to the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a lot - abused female, strong, smart and dangerous. A lot lighter read than Dragon, a lot less pages. Interesting enough to give the next one a chance and see where the author goes with it.

Started Linda Castillo's Breaking Silence last night, and this one really is a fast read. Not sure I will read any more of the series, perhaps try one more and see what the series is like.

I've read all three of this series now. Liked the first one best, they tend to be darker than I like and I'm having trouble with both of the main characters being so conflicted/damaged. I know it seems to be the norm now to have the main character with some sort of flaw, but this seems to be carrying it a bit too far.

Like you, I will probably read the next one that comes out but if it continues with this trend one more is probably going to be the last for me.
