Genine Franklin-Clark (suz83yq) I'meading two lbrary books - The Lincoln Lawyer and The Dog who came in from the Cold (bedtime reading, because A.M. Smith is so gentle and kind - good dreams)and still have on the back burner The Believing Brain (loving it, but not a library book, so not a priority), Anthony Bourdain's A Cook's Tour, and Full Dark, No Stars (I really don't care for short stories, so don't know why I bought this one - I read too fast, stories are over too soon.)

I'm enjoying the book a lot. I am about 21% of the way done. He's just now getting sucked into finding Tariq.

Georgia | 554 comments I am reading The Given Day by Dennis Lehane. It really isn't a mystery but rather a Saga of Old Boston, the immigrants, the life, a white family and a black family. It starts slow, but is now getting interesting.

Hey did anyone see Person of Interest on TV. The Main
Character reminds me of Jack Reacher. The Character is named John Reese. Pretty close, n'est-ce-pas?

I really enjoyed The Given Day. I agree that it starts a bit slowly, but I think it's a very ambitious and clever piece of work.

Jan (booklover777) | 66 comments I just finished The Night Season by Chelsea Cain. It's not as creepy as previous books in the series where Gretchen Lowell is tormenting Archie, but still a quick read and a good thriller.

Elli | 228 comments Done with Mistress of the ARt of Death series, and yes, I really enjoyed them! Now to read the next Donna Leon that I have home, then return it to the library....won't take long, I know. Her books really draw me in. And Venice.... and how it all weaves toward the desired solution and ending, with a heavy dose sometimes of privilege and politics, it's not an easy situation to work in, even for a native like the Commissario.

Elli - I've read a few of Donna Leon's books and they are great. Everything you say is right, characters are super, I can almost taste the food, the political intrigue is interesting.. great stories.

the lifestyle of the south. The book is excellent as
well as the movie. Go see it.

Bea | 39 comments I finished listening to the first two in the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley and have started the third A Red Herring Without Mustard. They are the perfect light humorous read/listen to go with finishing a sweater I am knitting. I really like the chemistry experiments. Not recommended for those who dislike precocious child protagonists.

Jannene | 775 comments Stacy wrote: "Started reading "The Help" I've picked it up once before - this time I'm determined to get through it and not be distracted by a murder mystery. :-)"

I've done this twice with Sandstorm by James Rollins and once with the Hunger Games. I may try the Hunger Games again since everyone seems to rave about it.

message 3863: by Genine (new)

Genine Franklin-Clark (suz83yq) I gave in to all the ooohhs and aahhhs about The Hunger Games and, since I had a refund from B & N, had the series - first three, anyway (are there more?) put on my NOOK. I seriously doubt that I'll like these (finished with vampires, et al after reading - and enjoying - Anne Rice's books many years ago.) So, not going in to these with an open mind.

I gave in as well. There are just the three of them. After reading 40 pages and not caring about the characters at all, I gave up. It comes off like a military/government type book where they are locked into this place and aren't able to leave and I was totally turned off.

A lot of historical information and well rounded characters. Am now reading A Bitter Truth: A Bess Crawford Mystery and a nordic novel Where the Shadows Lie.

Mark Stevens (writermarkstevens) | 13 comments I just finished "Bad Things Happen" by Harry Dolan. Also at the same reading (on audio CD) "The Bad Place" by Dean Koontz. Not a bad combination. I tend to like reality so Dolan's book is good .. gritty noir-ish. For Koontz, great energy but when it starts getting into "telepathic bridges," I kind of roll my eyes. Still, Koontz will get you going, no question.

James Thane (jameslthane) | 123 comments I really liked Bad Things Happen as well and am looking forward to Dolan's new book.

Gor93ous | 5 comments Just finished Konrath's "The List". An entertaining read with a good dose of humour. It's leaning toward horror a little bit, I guess, but it's definitely hilarious and packed with some great action scenes.

The first half of this book oozed out a strong vibe of a good thriller, but in the end I think it's more of a mix of thriller, a few droplets of horror, a spoonful of sci-fi, and a massive injection of hilariousness!

September has been a crazy month - earthquake, hurricane, flash floods, and lots of travel but I have managed to do some reading. Really enjoyed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and I probably would not have read it except for the group read - thanks Debra! Next up was Hotwire. It's the first Alex Kava I've read and it was a quick, entertaining page turner. Most recently I've finished The Dogs Of Rome which was a complex police procedural set in Rome and filled with twists, turns, politics, and corruption. I'm looking forward to the next one in this series by Conor Fitzgerald. Finally for laughs Carry On, Jeeves on audio kept me company in the car and at the gym.

Donna: I like Alex Kava's series better than the stand alones, although I see the potential for a spin-off characterin one of her newer books.

I recently was the grand prize winner of a contest that Alex ran, with the prize being 12 autographed books from authors that Alex enjoys - and 8 of those 12 are authors that I will be reading for the first time! I'm excited with new reading material and the prospect of new authors to follow, as well as excited to have the newest books from authors I do read.

message 3887: by Elli (new)

Elli | 228 comments Finished Donna Leon's Acqua Alta. I've enjoyed every one so far. This one dealt with stolen antiquities. Acqua Alta refers to the flood season in Venice, apparently a very uncomfortable and unstable time for Venetians. Perhaps even more so in this installment, the Commissario's dealings with the particular attitudes of the people including the powers that be towards the law, privilege, almost more exceptions to the rule than the rule...are almost an art in themselves. But in reading the series, one can see how Donna Leon, not a native, got hooked on Venice!

Laura DiSilverio | 9 comments I just finished Charles Todd's An Impartial Witness--I love his Bess Armstrong books--and am currently reading Spencer Quinn's Thereby Hangs a Tailand enjoying Chet's (the dog) narration more than in the first book in that series. I discovered several new authors at Bouchercon and can't wait to get started on one of Chris Ewan's "Burglar's Guide" books and Catriona MacPherson's Dandie Gilver series. Anyone read either of those series?

I'm trying to read the ever-growing pile before buying anything else.

Georgia | 554 comments I think John Rain and Jack Reacher are brothers, don't you. I love both of them. I have read Rain Fall and Hard Rain by Barry Eisler and plan to read the new book
too. As Far as Daniel Silva is concerned I have read
The English Assassin, and the Defector. I enjoy his writing but not as much as Eisler and Child. Silva is much more intellectual and wandering. I like the hard-hitting, crime does not pay attitude of Reacher and Rain. Love any mystery tho'

Good to know David! I'm 85% way through and hope to finish it tonight. I'm not sure if I'll start the next one or read since my in-laws gave me Silent Thunder by Iris Johansen and would like me to return it. It's a stand alone so I won't have to read the previous books to catch up. ;)

Did you find that you should read the Gallon series in order? If I just skipped to the ones my in-laws gave me would I miss much?

Is that by Bartlett?

If so, it is non-fiction about a book thief who steals rare books especially from dealers, I think. I'm not very far into it.

Jannene | 775 comments I just finished The Kill Artist (Gabriel Allon, #1) by Daniel Silva . This book was a good read. It took a while for me to get into because of background of Gabriel being laid out. It picked up the pace once Ari comes into the picture. I never suspected the ending and it was a real twist to me. I hope the next book is a bit quicker of a pace than this one.
