I want to read on A Highland Shore, I hear it's good.

Elaine, let me know how you like Anna Karenina. I have it but haven't had the urge to pick it up and read it.

Leea | 317 comments I just loved on a highland shore... I also bought and read Kathleen Givens fist highland books Kilgannon and the wild Rose of Kilgannon. Those are written in first person so it was a little strange at first but then the books have the feel of a biography

I just read the latest installment of the Bloody Jack series, "Rapture of the Deep". It's a YA series about a girl-disguised-as-boy-turned-sailor-adventurer-buccaneer. It's easy to read and a lot of fun. I'm thinking about starting Tess of the D'Ubervilles next. I didn't do any reading all summer; things were too crazy. It's nice to be back!

Megan | 410 comments I'm currently reading "Water for Elephants" by Sarah Gruen... It's got quite a high rating but I'm struggling with the animal cruelty :( It reminds me of a cross between the movie "Big Fish" and The Notebook...

message 210: by Alycia (new)

I've seen a lot of people reading that book too. I would have a hard time with the animal cruelty too! Big Fish was an interesting movie, not bad though

message 211: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 183 comments I've read that - it came very highly recommended from quite a few people, but I was disappointed. I enjoyed it (kind of) but it didn't grab me and I wouldn't re-read it, as I do with most books!

message 212: by Megan (new)

Megan | 410 comments Yeah I'm finding it a bit blah - I don't feel a connection to any of the characters, well except for Rosie the Elephant! She's awesome! ;)

For me, it was a tad bit slow in the beginning but I did end up finally finishing it and I liked it. I just had to immerse myself into Anna Karenina and imagine, quite vividly, the scenes. =]

Ha!! Yeah and they are making a movie out of the book... I think James Paterson is the lead... crazy!!

message 217: by Megan (new)

Megan | 410 comments Oh really? Actually it would make a much better movie than book, visually I'd imagine it be very spectacular, you know, the whole circus setting. I didn't mind the end of the book. I think I just expected too much from it, it had a fairly high rating on goodreads but it's just an average read (in my opinion)

Milena (love_tea78) | 158 comments For a long time after reading TBH trilogy I could not get into any other books and enjoy them as much as I did TBH books. I finaly stambled on Lady Julia Grey series by Deanna Raybourn and I really enjoyed them. They are Victorian murder mysteries with romance in them. I loved the main charecters. They reminded me a bit of T&A. Lady Julia Grey in the beginning of the book is young, naive and sheltered by her family just like Tatiana, but she becomes independend, strong as the books progress. The main hero Nicholas Brisbane is somewhat like Alexander. He is dark and handsome, very atractive, he has secrets in his past and he has his own demons that he struggles with. The relationship between Lady Julia and Brisbane is very intriguing and interesting, they have great chemistry plus you have the aspect of the solving the mystery and who done it. These books are not as epic as TBH, but ther are an excellent read. There are four books so far in the series: Silent In The Grave, Silent in the Sanctuary, Silent in the Moore and Dark Road to Darjeleeng. I can't wait for the next instalment in the series by Deanna Raybourn

Leea | 317 comments I just finished the Thorn Birds - Loved it!! Now i'm going to start Nefretiti... has anyone read it? Keep up the suggestions i love getting book ideas from you ladies :)

message 222: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh thanks for the suggestion, Milena, I hadn't heard of that series and it sounds great. My library has it on the shelf so I'm going to try and pick it up this weekend.

My first love has always been historical fiction, but I find that they are so emotionally taxing I like to alternate them with something light. I tried chick lit and hated it, but I've read a lot of good urban fantasy this year. It usually has some romance, but is not as predictable as PNR.

My two favorite series this year were the Faefever series by Karen Marie Moning (first one called Darkfever). The last book comes out in December or January and I am SOOOOO excited about it. I just re-read all four books in anticipation and they were great the second time too.

I also really like the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison. The first book (Dead Witch Walking) is really hard to get into, I almost gave up halfway through, but it picked up from there and I tore through the whole series. It's on my auto-buy list now. Love her stuff.

Milena (love_tea78) | 158 comments Did any one read The Shadow of the Wind byCarlos Ruiz Zafón?
I started to read this book, because it has very good reviews and very high praise for it's writing style, but I don't seem to get into it. I have read 150 pages and nothing interesting happened yet. Maybe it is one of those books that become interesting only in the second half. I had to put it down and started reading something else. Should I finish this book? Does it get better?

I absolutely loved this book, the entire story. I think it does lull in some places but if you keep reading it gets interesting again. I gave it 5 stars.

message 231: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for the tip on the ebook bundle, Alycia, I hadn't even checked for that. I like to get books for free at the library, but if I can get all three books for my Kindle for the same price as going to the movies it's worth it.

And just my two cents on the e-reader thing: totally worth it. I bought mine a couple years ago when they were still $350 and I haven't regretted it, but I can't believe how much they've come down in price since then. This is probably how the people who bought the first DVD players felt when they started showing up for $89 :) It's not good for much besides reading books since it's a black and white screen, but I love having hundreds of books at my fingertips and the screen is as easy on the eyes as a regular book. For a serious reader, it's a wonderful thing.

It's also handy when you're reading a book with a heaving bosom on the cover. No more brown paper bag covers and hiding them in my purse when someone walks by heehee.

It is a prequel of sorts. Same location, different characters, easier tome period. I would read TSOTW first

Megan | 410 comments I'm reading 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' at the moment. Probably the slowest beginning of any book I've read - EVER, but I persisted due to the hype and am glad I did, although it's SCARY! Silence of the Lambs kind of scary! Got 100 pages to go...

message 241: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh you are brave! I'll be curious to hear your final opinion on it~ scary books are usually way too much for me, though. I'm a "cover your eyes and hunker down till its over" kind of girl. Hard to do with a book.

I agree Alycia. The Shadow of the Wind was wonderful. If anyone thinks it starts slow that's because it discusses multiple characters and generations. You need to understand how everything fits together. The writing is great and so are the characters.

The Angel's Game didn't have the same spark to me. I didn't like the characters as much and the imagery seemed a bit rehashed from SOTW. However, it is always subjective so you should still try stuff out.

Milena (love_tea78) | 158 comments Another good book I have read recently is Moonlight in OdessabyJanet Skeslien Charles. It is about girl from Ukraine, who works at internet order bride agency as an interpreter.Eventually she finds American husband herself and moves to America. But her husband is not what he seemed to be, she has a culture shock and she doesn't have many friends. It is a funny and sad book at the same time. It has a bit of a slow start, but becomes very interesting and I did enjoy it very much.

It's safe to say that everything else came second to Tatiana and Shura this weekend. Can't do that when I'm trying to teach though! I'm so excited to start, and I'm also thinking about ordering the third book from Amazon UK.
