Leea, I finished reading Juliet and I really enjoyed it. I gave it 4 stars. Very nice twist on the story of Romeo and Juliet. I liked the characters a lot, they were well developed and the book was well written. I loved where it took place, I have been to Siena before, so it was very nice to read about it and find out more. Now I want to go back and revisit this beautiful place. Even thought there were two story lines, one set in the past and one in the present, the balance between them was very good. I find a lot of books that have story set in two different times often spend too much time in the past, and so the main characters and events in the present get neglected and underdeveloped. This wasn't the case with Juliet. The time spent on the past was enough for me to keep me interested, but not too much for me to get bored (as I already know what happened to Romeo and Juliet). I wanted more to see the story of present characters and find out what would happen to them and I was not disappointed. My only minor complaint is that some of the coincidences and events were little too neat and improbable, but this is just nitpicking

SMALL SPOILER ALERT FROM FIRST FEW CHAPTERS OF OUTLANDER******************

Thanks for the info Leea. I think I'm going in for the kindle. And that is the last time I stand on my pedestal----I'm eating my words!!! My husband is going to get a good laugh when I suggest we buy a new kindle!!! C'est la vie!

I laughed when you said you were a 'troublemaker'. Of course I'm not saying you are a troublemaker but you are very upfront and fiesty (or so I am thinking)and I love that...the reason I say this is because way back when I started this site (well, way back is maybe 6 months ago..) I was posting and chatting about TBH (obviously) when Kelly (love Kelly!) told me about Outlander. I absolutely LOVE that series (currently reading ABOSAA). I was just a few chapters into Outlander, just in the scene where Jamie wants to beat Claire. Of course at this point, only a few chapters in, I don't know that Jamie is the most honorable, amazing, kindhearted warrior-gentlemen in the book world. I only knew for sure that he was Incredibly Gorgeous and swoon-worthy and wanted to beat his wife. I didn't understand the whole scope of things as of yet.
Well, you had just posted that you loved Alexander but found him to be too controlling and loved Jamie better. I posted (and I was really new to the site at this point) that I thought Jamie was controlling too -way more than Alexander. Your very subtle but blunt response was. 'Well, to each his own' (I'm paraphrasing though very close to verbatim). That night I wound up reading the rest of the book (I usually read her books in 3 days they're so amazing). Afterwards I remembered that post and was like AAAHHHH - now I get what Leea meant. She must think I've lost my marbles. The next day I posted that I finished the book and Jamie was not like I had thought. I wrote about how much I heart Jamie Fraser etc.. and your next post was. 'Well said Toni'. You were very sweet and magnanamous about my faux pas.
I'll never forget that because I thought it was so funny and great that you were just straightforward. Very sweet about it of course but you just sounded like you were rolling your eyes at me thinking that I didn't know what I was talking about--which I didn't.
Anyhow Leea, when you said you were a troublemaker :) I laughed. Just because, like I said, you were--oh, I don't know the exact word, but let's just say sweet, but not shy. I loved it!!!!!

I don't know what I'm going to read yet. I'll post in the next day or so though. I'm excited to do some research and find something fab. I love reading everyone's suggestions. It helps me parse through the good, the ok, and the awful.

By the way, what is the Sin and Virtues series I see some of you all talking about? Is that erotica? It sounds it. I've never read erotica but have had a few people tell me I should try it. Is it a good genre? Is that a good series?
I'd love to hear from any/all who have read this and have any suggestions on the book and about erotica. A friend I trust suggested I read one and I'd like to. Very curious??!!She mentioned Addicted as one of her favorites.

What do you think of Into the Wilderness? I've heard a few people say they enjoyed it. Is it good? great? amazing? awful? What would you say so far if you don't mind me asking? I just have seen this book around a lot and I'm curious of your thoughts.

Toni | 298 comments I recently heard Diana Gabaldon say that the book: Company of Liars is amazing..one of her favs. I looked it up and it is not a love story but it looks really interesting! I'm going to look into it a little more. Has anyone read this? Would love to hear. I'm going to check out some reviews. I really like Diana as a writer so I'm intrigued that she would talk so very highly of this book. Hmmm...

Leea | 317 comments Awww Toni you are sweet. I'm just glad I did not piss you off or turn you off from the Outlander Series. I am a troublemaker not on purpose... For me I found Outlander and Jamie first and then came across TBH and Alexander. Both wonderful books and I love them so much, that I tell everyone about them.

Toni, here's the thing about erotica... it's all about the sex. I know... you should read a few because life is short and they are just fun. Here are some that i've read and enjoyed. A little graphic language... cover those ears ladies :)(view spoiler)

Backstage Pass (Sinners on Tour #1) by Olivia Cunning I liked this one but the second in the series is also really good.
Long Hard Ride (Rough Riders, #1) by Lorelei James I just started this series and I'm really enjoying these HOT cowboys. haha!

Toni, I'm new to this genre so let me know if you find any you like.

I really enjoyed the Wilderness Series... Although in the Outlander group it can be controversial because Donati made some strange comment about Diana Gabaldon. That aside, I loved them so much and found the Bonner family fresh, interesting, sweet and addicting. Huge plus when reading a long series is that with this one you will get to finish it because they are finished. Enjoy Toni!!

Megan | 410 comments GLad you liked The Tea Rose Chrissy - I love the Winter Rose. Outlander needs some psyching up as they're so extensive, but definitely a must-read! I've just dived back into Drums of Autumn after saying I wasn't reading any more. I just can't seem to detach myself from Jamie and Claire LOL!

message 609: by May (new)

May (chrissy_12) | 86 comments Thanks Alycia, Laura and Megan :)
I am definitely looking forward to The Winter Rose, especially after hearing it is better than The Tea Rose!
I loved Addicted... and am still currently trying to track down another copy of Sinful to complete. I was kind of hoping that Lust will be as good, but if not, at least I can always go back to the other two ;)
Thanks for the heads up, I won't get my hopes up to high then.
In my opinion Toni, I would definitely read Addicted by Charlotte Featherstone... as it will decide whether you enjoy erotica or not.
It is a definite favourite of mine, and hopefully it will be one of yours too :D

Lady England | 39 comments I just finished Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotay. Very well written novel. Heartbreaking in many ways but a wonderful read. I'm currently reading Conquistadora by Esmeralda Santiago. Another beautifully written novel about a stong and independent female lead character. I must be drawn to strong female leads. Claire and Tatiana both fit the mold as well as the lead in Russian Winter.

Does that mean that ITW is not as good as the books continue??

message 615: by Hildy (new)

Hildy (hildygirl) Laura, nope, it doesn't mean that. I still really liked the second book and I'm so excited to read book 3. I heard book 3 was even better than 2. I fully intended to start it last night, but then two of my Goodreads friends were freaking out about how good These is My Words was and I was feeling left out! :) I just have to see what the fuss is all about. I'm hoping to breeze through it and start book 3 of ITW by the weekend!!

I really enjoyed Into the Wilderness but I think I did a disservice to the novel because I read it on the heals of the Outlander series. That being said It is a really solid piece of work and I highly recommend it. Elizabeth and Nathaniel are so great together! I was a bit disappointed with book 2 and stopped reading the series. I would NEVER go with any comments Diana writes because she also writes LJG and I don't like those books at all.

Okay...I have got to remember NOT to wait too many days to get on this site because I have so many people I want to reply/post to (LOL I sound like someone making a speech at the Oscars. My husband always laughs at how they're like 'OH, I have sooo many people to thank, I don't know where to begin!'
Leea-Of course I didn't get pissed off, I thought it was great. You're passionate about your books (and Jamie....though anybody who Isn't passionate about Jamie needs to be checked for a pulse!!) and I love that. You put me in my place in a very subtle but Clear way. And you were right, I have to admit. It's funny how I was reading that exact scene at that exact moment. ANY other time in ANY of those books I would have said the Exact opposite-exactly what YOU said! As for the erotica. I am nervous to start. Isn't that crazy? I'm not a Catholic schoolgirl (obviously you can guess I'm not a school girl what with a child!---though I suppose if I Was I could BE in one of these books!!) but I do feel like I would be reading it while furtively looking around me, paranoid. Of what, I do not know! I'm not sure what it is.....and I know it's crazy, but I feel it's like jumping off a cliff into waters below..do I take the dive? what am I nervous about? Perhaps I'm concerned I will get Too into it. I'll become a little junkie! LOL. I have heard that Backstage Pass is a good one. Long Hard Ride LOL...I didn't need to know THAT was erotica..the title says it ALL!!!!! I have heard from a few people that Addicted by Charlotte Featherstone is a good one. I have to say I was looking online at different ones and the descriptions/previews were making my throat dry from all the hard Gulps I was taking!! Steamy is not even the half of it! Oh, and by the way..what does HEA mean?? :)
Hildy-I am looking forward to Into the Wilderness but I am reading These Is My Words first. Sounds sooo good!!!! Thanks for the tip.
Lady-I read a review in a magazine about Conquistador and it was a very good review. Would love to know what you think of it when you're done!
Laura-I am the Biggest Outlander fan and would do anything to get any Jamie fix that I could but I also heard a lot of negative reviews and remarks about LJG from a lot of people who I trust who've read it before--so I too am going to leave well enough alone. He didn't bother me but wasn't very intriguing and can't for the life of me see a whole book on him! Did you say William was in Echo? I haven't made it there yet. 1/3 way thru ABOSAA now. You said William with a smile..does that mean he's Jamie-ish? A young Jamie again would be just what the doctor ordered!!!
Rena-I envy you soooooooo much to be reading TSG for the first time. I'd do anything to go back in time and read that series for the first time. I'm not nearly as blessed as the other girls on this site because I just can't read the books for a second time. I so wish I could. But they don't give me that high like the first time I read them so I don't want to ruin it and I don't, therefore, re-read them. But to read them for the first time-sigh!!! I completely agree with you--read it slow and savor it. I rushed thru all three books like they were on fire (well...they were!!) and afterwards I reproached myself for it. TSG is amazing. Some of the most startlingly real, human, and poignant scenes in the series. Can't wait to hear what you think!! DO post when you finish..or are reading thru it. I can live vicariously thru you. LOL ;)

I'm not sure what to say about Robin. What's up with him keeping Tully around. First..she is with him than hooks up with ?? (can't remember his name). The guy that Robin was sharing her with before they were married. The one Tully chose to go away to California with and leave Robin home, until she found out she was pregnant with Robin's baby..so he was second then...and after they were married she hooks up with Jack and falls in love with him. Robin suspects she is with someone, maybe he knows it's Jack, but Robin continues to stay with her. She has Jack's baby, and he still doesn't leave her. She tells him that she is planning to go to California with Jack and wants to take Robin Jr. with her, and he still keeps her in the house and he doesn't leave her. Finally he gets the "balls" to leave her and she tells him she loves him and wants him always, and he comes back to her...WHAT is wrong with him (Robin)!!!!

message 634: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 183 comments Wasn't the second guy Jack all along? Anyway I think Robin just loves her and knows what she's been through and keeps hoping/waiting she'll realise how much he loves her and is there for. It takes him leaving her for her to realise this!

I am pretty sure that you will never ever find a guy that is as clueless and forgiving as Robin is... although he also apparently cheated, I'm not quite sure for how long, I don't think it was as long as Tully. I did not like Robin very much, I think Jack was much better for Tully. He was the one who truly understood her and loved her just the same. Robin was the safe choice for Tully, but I think she felt happiest with Jack. Only with Jack she stoped having nightmares and was able to sleep at night.

Robin is a character in the book Tully, by Paullina Simons.

That's true Milena but for me I still have a bit of a grudge towards Jack. Just because of what he put Jenny through... why didn't he go just go for Tully back then??
Looking back on it now, I think just about every character got on my nerves at one stage, they definitely weren't perfect... which I guess just made the book seem more realistic

Grail Prince is kind of the sequel (though it could be read in isolation); it makes a few references to things that happened in Queen of Camelot but explains them enough that you don't have to read it first. Anyway I highly recommend Queen of Camelot, and so far recommend Grail Prince!

I feel like I'm a salesman saying this (and a cheesy one at that)but, if you liked TBH...you'll love Outlander!! Chrissy you are in for one of the best reads ever. Being a TBH fan,you can't help but Love Outlander and it's hearthrobby hero Jamie Fraser (how come I get a thrill just writing his name. Perhaps that thought should be followed by a gander thru Google for a good psychologist. I do admit I can see myself at one of those meetings for addicts: My name is Toni and I'm an Outlander addict/TBH addict. I have a feeling I'd see a lot of you all there too! ;) It's true though, it's not just like reading any book, reading these two series IS addicting. I just finished ABOSAA-AMAZING!!!!One of the BEST!!-and two seconds after I was on amazon ordering it until I stopped myself and decided to drive to Barnes and Noble being I couldn't wait three days for a fedex delivery and the next fix! I cannot even fathom what I'll do post Echo. Probably go into shock. Literally Every book I read I'm praying is as good as one of those two series. Chrissy ENJOY!!! Truly...you will love it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jessica-did you finish Roses? How did you like it? I have heard lots of good things about Queen of Camelot. A few of the girls on this site have had positive things to say about it. I'm going to have to put it on my to-read list for sure.

Rena-How's it going w/ TSG? What do you think? Amazing, eh? I'm wickedly jealous that your getting first run Alexander, you lucky little devil you! :) :)

Laura-What category would you put One Day in? Is it a love story? Coming of age? I read the summation but I can't figure out whether I think I'll like it. Why do you say love it or hate it? Sorry to barrage you with these questions like a journalist running after a debauched politician, but I'd love to get an idea,if possible, of whether it's for me. I have soo many bloody books on my to-read list I'm trying to root out the must-reads from the might-reads! :)

Happy reading ALL!!

Jessica | 183 comments Toni, Queen of Camelot is a must read I think! As for Roses, yes I finished it... not sure what I thought though! I couldnt put it down, so that was a good thing, but I just found it heartbreaking with no happy ending! I didn't really care much for Rachel and Matthew - I felt like Mary and Percy were much more involved and I loved them and then there was never any resolution, just sadness. There was for Rachel and Matthew but I didn't care as much about those two so didn't really care what happened. I loved the Mary/Percy/Ollie parts of the book though. Definately worth a read, but don't think I'll re-read for a while!

Laura, I didn't find it Amazing at all, I think the movie will be better than the book... and that is uncommon! I see what your saying about the love it or hate it. I am in the middle of that giving it a 3 star rating although it didn't blow me away I have an appreciation for it.

My review

I must say I'm truly amazed at why so many people LOVE this book.

Let's start with the writing, for me it lacked flow and had major transition issues when jumping POV's It just felt very choppy! I do realize that it is written by an English gentleman so I'm sure that squawking about all the British slang would not be fair!

I did finish the book in about 3 days and really enjoyed all the twists and turns and I thought the concept of the One Day interesting and fresh. I just wish I liked the characters more and for that matter that they liked themselves and each other more!

They were NEVER truly happy. Always seeming lost and searching for some ideal that never came. Dex and Emma's self-deprecating attitudes towards each other was wearing on me.

A very few times I caught a glimpse at the Dexter and Emma that they wanted to be and from that I suppose is what they see in each other I just wish we had more of that.

The ending was not expected as I had read no reviews prior. But I was aware that it was not an HEA ending. That was fine for me and I didn't mind the ending. If I had known the ending I may not have slogged (British slang????) through the pages. So don't read this review (LOL)

Em and Dex, Dex and Em, yes, they probably were meant for each other. Who else would have such miserable people!

Now off you go, to the movies!

Laura | 48 comments Toni, it's a bit of both, but it is not a conventional love story. I loved it because the emotions were so powerfully written and I could relate to them so easily. As per Kelly's comment above, just more proof that its either one or the other on this book. I don't think that readers of traditional romance would or readers that require a traditional happy ending would like it. I think it's really a comment on life and how we get out of it what we put into it, time cannot be replaced and we have to deal with consequences and situations as they come to us. I really enjoyed it. Here's my review on it: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Laura | 48 comments Aww Kelly! I could see how you didn't like it, I read it with a specific frame of mind which is another reason it really worked for me. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the movie! I know its out this weekend but I am waiting on some friends, so I won't be seeing it for a couple of weeks.

Toni | 298 comments Jessica-I agree I Truly was not nearly as interested in Rachel and Matthew as I was Mary and Percy. It's kind of like how I feel about Outlander. LOVE Jamie and Claire, Roger and Bree, not so much. I know what you mean about not having a happy ending though. I'm kind of an odd lass on that though, as much as I do love me a good happy ending, I also get madly swept away in a sad ending where I cry my eyes out or even a book that ends with a conclusion but an ending where your left thinking and wistful. As long as the story is powerful I like all three different kinds of resolutions for different reasons but I DO understand most people want a happy ending and I get it completely. The book was a good read but I can never re-read books..I so wish I could. Roses was a great book but not on the same level at all with a TBH or Outlander, but then few are. Glad you liked it though. Whew!(wiping the sweat from my forehead) I would have felt awful if you hated it!:)

Chissy-Oh boy, I didn't realize we were taking you away from your studies or I'd never have told you to get involved with this series. You'll be a drop out once you get involved with James Fraser....:) :) Enjoy!!! Let us know how you're liking it!!

Megan-You know Drums of Autumn was not my favorite. I've read all but Echo which I just ordered and I have to say that I loved Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Voyager, then had a dip with DofA which I thought was a definitely not on the same level, then an even deeper drop with TFC, but then A Breath of Snow and Ashes blew my socks off! It was one of the best of the series. I really, really loved it! So I'd say if you love Jamie (and if you can't, I'm defriending you..lol!!:) )try and stick it out but maybe take a nice little break and come back when youre yearning for that bonny lad again. Just to be straight, I thought The Fiery Cross was the worst of the lot but honestly the second half really picked up and I wound up enjoying it. Jamie has always been Jamie and always perfect, but Claire has just gotten better and better. I always liked her but now I love her. I think whether you read thru or take a break if you still love J and C you should keep going bc ABOSAA is sooooo worth it!

Laura-I'm going to go and check out your review right now. I do love reading your little posts/comments on the books, you have a really fun sense of humor and are very sweet. I finished with Captain Elliot (super super sigh...) and I can't wait to go all dreamy and googly eyed reminiscing and chatting with you about it!! Can't wait to hear what you think and what your fav parts were. LOVED that book!!!!!
