WELCOME, Dia!

I know what you mean--sometimes I think I'm the only person I know who really reads books! But you've come to the right place to talk about books, and not just Austen. We hope you like it here!

Katie Russell | 3 comments Hi my is Katie and I have loved Austen for about 15 years but for years kept saying I didn't have a favorite book because I love to read so much but this last year I reread Austen and had to admit that Austen is my favorite writer since then I have been going on fanfiction boards looking for great reads. I decided to check out goodreads Austin boards.

C (fightingfromafar) Hi, I'm Minerva, 17 years old, and I've loved Jane Austen since I first watched Pride and Prejudice, the film version. English is not my first language, so it took quite a few years before I actually read the books, but I finally did, and I must be allowed to tell you all how ardently I admire and love Austen's books :D The main trouble with being a 17 year old Austen fan in a non-english-speaking country is the total lack of people to discuss good literature with. Most people my age don't seem to read books at all (unless school demands it, or their parents pay them to do so). So, here I am, and I am most certainly looking forward to interesting discussions about some of the best books ever written.

message 1157: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Minerva! How awesome that you read Austen! You will find lots of people here to talk to - jump into a topic and see!

Sophie | 1458 comments Hello! I completely understand you pain! I am just 18 and although I live in England, I still find it hard to find people my age who I can discuss it with. They also don't seem to read and definitely not Jane Austen! Goodreads has been great to find so many people of varying ages and nationalities to discuss it with! You have found the right place. :)

WELCOME, Minerva!

I definitely know what you mean about feeling like the only person who reads! But GoodReads is the right place to do something about that feeling, and this group is the right place for an Austen fan like you! Glad to have you with us!

It's ok; with every re-read I find something new, so it's almost as good as reading them the first time!

S.K. Rizzolo (skrizzolo) | 28 comments Hi:

I wanted to introduce myself too. I write mysteries set in Jane Austen's era, so I enjoy doing research about the period. Persuasion is my favorite of Austen's novels, though I love them all.

Also, I reread Austen every few years--I agree that the reader makes new discoveries each time.

Best wishes!

message 1177: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello S.K.! Persuasion is my favorite also! I think Austen's historical period is one of the most interesting. Glad you have joined the group!

It's a very fun group of people - all ages, many different cities/states/countries, and all are fans of Jane Austen! The variety of experiences and opinions is wonderful and I love to watch the discussions take off and follow where it all goes. I hope you jump in!

message 1182: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Hi, My name is Rachel and I've loved Jane Austen since I was a kid. I honestly can't remember when exactly I was first introduced to her--was it watching "Pride and Prejudice" on BBC? Or my dad reading to me? My dad's a retired librarian and historian who loves the classics, so I grew up with Mr. Darcy and Colonel Brandon and . . .

I have so far read Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Northanger Abbey. My daughter (13 years old) and I are now reading Austen's novels together. We've decided to read them chronologically based on when they were published. I am now going to read all of them with my daughter. She and I have some of the greatest discussions around character motivations, what we would do if, and so on.

I'm wondering if anyone else here has read any of Ann Radcliffe's novels as a result of reading Austen? My favorite Austen novel so far is Northanger Abbey because I just love the melodrama and ghost-story feel to it. It's so much fun watching Catherine grow up!

I'm looking forward to talking about Jane with others who appreciate her as much as I do!

I'm a bit envious that you have the experience of reading Persuasion for the first time ahead of you, and I love that you are passing Austen on to the next generation! Glad you are with us!

Marie | 8 comments Hello dear Janeites! I'm Mariam, 23, from Georgia. I'm Austen addict for several years already. I absolutely love her books and most of their movie adaptations. One of the first things i did when I signed up on this site was looking for groups dedicated to her and I'm so happy i found this one. I enjoy reading your comments and hope to engage myself in discussions soon as well :)

Dia Elot | 18 comments Hi I'm Badia , shortly Dia .. i'm 17, I adore books , that's no news , i like books that discusses the ideas of principles , strengh and bravery ! I LOVE mysterious characters , not in a silly way . I mean when the writer is not obliged to tell us :this person is hidding a secret and he is mysterious --' .. no that's silly .. and this is what made me loooove The count of monte cristo , a mezmerising hero ! .. so my favorite authors are alexandre Dumas and Jane Austen .. I like the latter because she totally understands woman's feeelings and has such a flawless style of writting .. That's it I guess

message 1189: by S.K. (last edited Mar 27, 2014 10:27AM) (new)

S.K. Rizzolo (skrizzolo) | 28 comments Hi Rachel:

I've never read Ann Radcliffe, but I've long thought I would like to. The Gothic genre interests me (all those images of female entrapment in a patriarchal culture). It would be fun to read Northanger Abbey and The Mysteries of Udolpho together. Perhaps we modern readers miss some of Austen's allusions, and in Northanger Abbey, these allusions are really part of the fun of her parody of Gothic fiction.

Anyway, how wonderful that you are sharing Austen with your daughter. Enjoy!

Hi Dia, nice to meet you too. I guess it's a natural thing to do for Austen lovers :)) Oh and The Count of Monte Cristo was my childhood's favourite book, I think it was the first book that made a huge impression on me.

Brooke | 2 comments Hello, I'm Brooke. I fell in love with Jane Austen after seeing the BBC's Pride and Prejudice mini-series in the mid-90s. Since then, I've read all of Jane's books and seen just about every film/movie adaptation there is, and a few modern day spin-offs to boot! My favourite Jane Austen book is Persuasion, with Pride and Prejudice a close second. I love to read Jane-inspired novels and I'm intrigued by the current Jane Austen project. Looking forward to chatting with you about all things Jane!
