Margaret Metz | 112 comments Hi, I'm Lee and I'm a huge Austen fan. I'm sorry to be boring - but Pride & Prejudice is my favorite.

I'm pretty new to goodreads and haven't added all my books - mostly just the ones I've just recently read. I'm still working on getting all of them in. I have a lot of sequels too. I think since we all crave more of Austen they are always going to be popular (at least I hope so).

I also have the movies on DVD ~ and for some of them I have multiple versions. lol

I'm a new writer working on my first manuscript. It is a contemporary romance. I read a lot ~ and especially romances ~ to help me write them better. Besides, they're a lot of fun and a great escape. :o)

Welcome Lee from another huge Austen fan! Persuasion is my favorite. You can post your follow-up favorites on our bookshelf. Maybe you'll find something new!

VMom (votermom) | 68 comments Hello!
I am a book-addict mom of two. I discovered Austen quite late, in my 30s. My favorite is P&P, followed probably by Northanger Abbey (I love gothics and love the way she gently skewers them ).
I am so pleased to have found this group just as I am watching the Emma series on dvr.

Welcome to the group Mayakda. I am still undecided as to which production of Emma had the most handsome Mr. Elton. Thanks for jumping right in!

message 55: by Joy (new)

Joy (joyousnorth) Hello fellow Jane-ites! My name is Joy and I am currently working on my BA in English (Literature) after taking a few years off. I will graduate this May and am planning on continuing my education and pursuing a Master's in English (Literature) focusing on Victorian Literature.

I was introduced to Jane Austen when I saw Emma Thompson's film version of Sense & Sensibility in middle school, fell in love, and went on to read all of Austen's novels. Persuasion is my favorite and I read it at least once a year! I look forward to discussing Jane with everyone :)

message 56: by Kim (new)

Kim | 181 comments Hello There! My name is Kim, I'm 23 years old and totally in love with anything Jane Austen. I currently work in accounting but in my free time am obsessed with reading anything Austen. Pride and Prejudice being my favorite of all her novels! My sister had we watch the BBC version with Colin Firth and I fell in love with the story. I started reading the book upon completion of the mini-series. From that point on I think I did all of my book reports in high school on her other novels. I was lucky enough to get into a Romantic Literature in college (English was my minor) in which the main focus was on Pride and Prejudice. I'm very excited to see so many other fans of Austen and I look forward to reading the posts in the group!

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Joy and Kim! I came to read Austen after watching the 2005 version of P&P. I never got to study her works in college, so I am looking forward to your (both of you) contributions to the discussions! We are just finishing Emma, if you'd like to join in.

I have a young son and I am a lit high school teacher. I am interested in homeschooling. What do you think about it? I want to give my kids the opportunity to do a lot of independent learning with their own interests.

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, Amanda, I'll start with the short version. I have homeschooled my daughter her whole life. She is 15 and a junior, still at home. In high school I did start her on online school, but for the elementary and middle school grades I was her primary teacher.

Homeschooling gives kids the opportunity to study based on their interests, outside of teach-for-the-test and/or grade and age-level constraints. For example, we studied British history and lot of mythology in grades 4 - 6.

Homeschoolers have a very low teacher/student ratio (in my case 1:1). She got to excel when she could and got extra time when she needed it.

Always glad to answer questions about homeschooling. Feel free to send me a message, too, if you'd like to go offline. I have met a few other homeschoolers here on GoodReads, too.

~Sara~ | 1 comments I was just on another site where someone mentioned that this group would be starting an Austen group read soon so I thought I would join you.
I've only read P&P, S&S and Emma, so I look forward to reading the rest of her books and having people to discuss them with!
So far my favourite, like so many others, is P&P but I don't have many to choose from yet.

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Sara! Always happy to add someone with super powers to the group. (love your picture).

I hope you will enjoy Northanger Abbey! Looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

Sigrid Ruyter Smolan | 14 comments Hey! :D
Can i just say.. I almost jumped around screaming with happiness when I found this group! ;D <3

My name is Sigrid, I'm 18 years old and Norwegian. My world is literature: both reading and writing.
I love English literature, practically everything english and I consider England my second home country ^^
My best friend, who happens to be English, actually say that I'm very English for a Norwegian girl :P
I'm reading a book called "Watching the English" right now, about the habits of Englishmen, and I love it so far. It's really entertaining and funny! :D I would recommend anyone to read it ;)

I really love "old" authors like Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, the Brontë Sisters and so on. My all-time favourite book (so far, though i suppose it will for always be so) is Pride and Prejudice.
I haven't read all her books iet :'( but that's going to change soon! :D
I'm going to start Emma soon I think ^^

I also play the violin (for 11 years), have a beautiful and playful, black Schnauzer called Nicki and I'm the smiling type ;)

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Sigrid! This is obviously where you belong (we love smiling types)! We are starting Northanger Abbey on Friday. Please join our discussion!

I will be visiting the Bergen area in June with the Ames Children's Choir. What part of Norway do you live in?

message 65: by VMom (new)

VMom (votermom) | 68 comments Hi Sigrid! Just wanted to say hi because I think you have a lovely name. My best friend when I was very young was also named Sigrid, so I have very fond feelings for the name. :)
Watching the English sounds really funny; I must try to get hold of it.

Sigrid, nice to meet you. What a beautiful way to introduce yourself to let us know you are the smiling type. We all need more friends with that quality. I am glad you found our group also. We have a lot of fun here and try to develop some interesting discussions. So glad to add another Austenite to the roster! A good friend of mine is from a very Norwegan family, but grew up here in America in Wisconsin. Your culture is very interesting to me. I was born and have always lived in the southern U.S. with a lot of English roots, so I lean toward the English authors naturally too.

message 67: by Sigrid (new)

Sigrid Ruyter Smolan | 14 comments Thanks everyone! :D I feel really welcome now ^^
and thanks Jeanette for thinking I belong here! :D
I've read Northanger Abbey once before, but I would love to read it again, so I'll try to join you, but I'm very busy working with a school revue right now, so it might take some time before I start... :(

I live close to Oslo. I've never been to Bergen, but I think it's a really cosy city, and the people have a funny accent! xD
I sing in a choir too :D in school and it's so much fun ^^

Thanks Mayakda! I like my name too :D where was your friend from?

Nice to meet you too Sarah ^^
I smile most of the time and my friends tell me I have a beautiful smile :D
I do believe you have a lot of fun here! It's a Jane Austen group after all ;P I love discussing books and the like!
I love "Austenite" :D I've never heard that one before.. :P

Was your friend's family from Norway or were they just very Norwegian? :P
I like my culture^^ and the nature is so beautiful I think! I love walking in the woods and on the mountains and so on :D the air is so fresh... yeah.. I'm kind of a nature-person too :P
and I love the old, Norwegian folks-music, since I'm a very musical person as well ;P
YOU TALK SOUTHERN AMERICAN???? :D (please say yes!)

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't remember if I'm a new member or not, so I'll introduce myself (again?)
I'm a sophomore in high school. I read through the books in 8th grade and have had a slight obsession since. My favourite is Pride and Prejudice right now, but only because I just finished reading it. It's usually Emma or Persuasion.

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Lady Clara! Welcome to the group for the first (or second) time. I love all of Austen's books, but Persuasion always remains my favorite. :)

Hi! My name is Rachel, new to Good Reads and this group. :) When I started searching for groups to join I knew I would find an Austen one! I adore all the novels, obviously, and the juvenalia I've been able to read. I have recently been getting VERY into all the Austen sequels/spin offs/modernizations, etc that are out there now. I am currently reading Pamela Aidan's Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman trilogy.

I absolutely CAN NOT WAIT to get into the discussions, polls, and everything else in this group. I will try my hardest to be very active here! Hope to talk to you all soon!

Welcome Bronia! You've found the right group. How nice to give Mr. Bingley your vote! I prefer Captain Wentworth, myself. :)

Bronia | 1 comments A place to discuss all things Austen...happy thought indeed!
I’m an Australia gal who has always loved to read. I’ve enjoyed Austen since watching Clueless as a teenager and discovering it was based on a sublime book. Emma remains my favourite and while I adore the Lizzy and Darcy love story, I’ve always thought Mr Bingley would be my ideal match!
It's been exciting to find all the Austen related novels here and I'm looking forward to talking about the old and the new!

I've always liked Bingley too -- easy-going, eager to please -- all around nice guy! And rich! LOL! I commend your taste! :)

message 76: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey Hi, My name is Lindsey and I am a 22 year old recent college graduate. I started reading Jane Austen about 3 years ago and have loved her writing ever since. My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. It is also one of my favorite books overall and I have probably read it 10 times in the past year.
I currently work as a lab manager in the department of psychology at the University of Arizona and am awaiting to attend (hopefully, if I get in) graduate school in the fall

I have also got my sister hooked on Austen and I think her husband may want to kill me for it... :)

Hi Bronia and Lindsey. We are giving Austen-related novels a good looking into here. Look around our group and note that we are also talking about discussing some novels that relate to our current discussion Northanger Abbey.

Yes, Lindsey, let your bro-in-law know Austenitis is a growing problem!

message 79: by Stephanie (last edited Mar 18, 2010 12:59PM) (new)

Stephanie (stephw1988) Hi!

My name is Stephanie. I am 22 years old and i live in Germany. I first heard of Jane Austen over 10 years ago while watching You've got mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan when she describes how great Pride & prejudice is. I had to find out what is so special about this book. Since then I've read it several times and every time i read it i find new details and the characters become more and more familiar. Thats what i like about Austen's books. No matter how often you read them, they're never the same and you can't get enough of them.

Welcome Stephanie! I find that the minute I start thinking about one of Austen's books or just mention it to someone I just want to turn around and read it again.

Welcome Stephanie! I hadn't forgotten that scene in You've Got Mail. You'll find a lot of kindred spirits here in this group!

Lani (lani14) | 57 comments Hi everyone
I read first my Jane Austen book in my 30's after I had seen the 1940s version of P&P. I thought that Ms Austen was too high brow for me until I saw that movie. I laughed so much I thought that if the book is 1/10th as funny, it would be a hoot. The movie trashed the storyline somewhat, but the movie gave me a visual to key into as I read. And Ms Austen had a drier wit than that movie. My favorite book is Persuasion for drama and Northanger Abbey for belly laughs. I guess this is a long winded intro to say I love all things Austen and I'm sorry I wasted time thinking she was too fancy for my taste.
And its great to talk with people who feel the same way I do.

I also thought Austen was going to be another dry classic until I read it. She is now my chocolate as far as books go. I can't imagine going without her stories. I think what makes her timeless is that she taps into the heart of what motivates people ~ hopes, dreams, weaknesses and strengths ~ how low they are willing to go and what sacrifices they are willing to make.

Those essential truths don't change. It also helps that she is so intelligent and manages to inject her wit into her tales.

Welcome to the group Lani! I was in my late 40's when I started Austen. Matthew McFadyen pushed me over the edge. :) I had always thought Austen was a bit too stuffy and too wordy. Isn't it great we discovered we were mistaken?

Thanks Jeannette and Lee for a warm welcome.
Yes and I'm glad now I am finding it also true of Elizabeth Gaskell after reading and seeing on PBS Cranford.
Who would have guessed the the Regency and Victorian ladies would have so much wit and wisdom for us today?

message 86: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Gulley Hello, I'm new to this list, but an old timer for Jane. Love all her books including the unfinished that were finished by others. Never tackled Juvenalia, but maybe one of these days. I like some sequels, but only those that try to get further along on secondary characters. If they include a mystery, I'm very happy.
I'm a member of the Jane Austen North American Society, and am fortunate that my home town has a local branch.

Hope (heyhopeful) Hi everyone. I'm Hope, I'm 16 and homeschooled (Junior). I just really love classic books, they're the best literature we have! (well, that could be contested, since some "classics" are pretty much trash). But, I love Austen.
My favorite book by Jane is Emma because Emma Woodhouse is so very real. She's not even that likable, really, until the end. Knightley is my favorite Austen gentleman. :)

I'm probably the youngest person on here, so I doubt I'll be all too active. xD

I homeschool and my youngest son is 15. :o) Don't let your age stop you from posting. It's all about how you feel and think about the books and characters ~ that doesn't have an age limit on it. As a matter of fact, since many of them were close to your age, it may even help give the discussions perspective.

message 92: by Shell (new)

Shell McConville | 1 comments Hi, My name is Shell and my addiction to Jane Austen started when I read Pride & Prejudice at school when I was about 12. I can't tell you how many times I've read the 6 books. P&P was always my favourite but as I have got older (I'm 53), I have a special affection for Persuasion. I have all the JA's writings including several copies of her books and her letters. I have sequels, mysteries etc etc. I have almost a complete Austen DVD collection (can't keep up these days) and I'm trying to write a sequel of my own. I guess that makes me a fan. :0)

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome, Shell! I'm 53 and my favorite is Persuasion, too! I wonder if it's having a different perspective on life and things at this age of our lives? Hope you will join in the discussions! :)

My favorite JA is probably S&S. I've read all the major books in the canon several times, but now I can't wait to get my hands on some of the "smaller" works. Any favorites?

Karlyne Landrum Hi, all! I'm a homeschool mom, too, but my kids are so old that if I posted their ages, they'd be annoyed with me. That being said, I can state confidently that we all still love Jane. Our book club read "Northanger Abbey" last month, and I'm still laughing. But, I have to say that "Persuasion" is still my favorite; just when I think "Emma" is gaining, Anne Elliot comes back to lovingly haunt me.
