Hi!

I'm twelve, and I'm pretty new to Austin. I read the first of her novels a couple of months ago, Pride and Prejudice. I really loved it, though, and hope to read another soon- deciding between Emma and Mansfield Park.

Actually, Chatsworth is part of my "Tudor" tour but..."

yes its fantastic tudor mansion-if it interests u 'bess of hardwick, first lady of chatsworth' is a very interesting biograpghy of bess of Hardwick who was very rich and owerful and lived through the reigns of Henry, Edward, Mary and most of Elizabeth's. Fascinating lady. She also lived at Harwick hall which may be on your iteinary?

message 153: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Hi Karen, Yes, It's mainly Bess I'm interested in, but I'm also quite fascinated by Georgiana. I know she belonged to the set that JA despised but she truly is fascinating in her own right. Read biographies of both her and Bess, and yes, Hardwick Hall is on my must see list and part of my tour :-).

georgiana of devonshire is that? I havent read her biography yet. That the one they made the movie 'The Duchess' on? Visited kedleston hall and they had a display of all the costumes from the movie which was pretty cool and kedleston is lovely to visit.

message 155: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Yep, that's her. I believe Chatsworth also has a Georgiana Exhibition now because of the interest generated by the book and the movie. The biography by Amanda Foreman is excellent, and I highly recommend it. (From a JA perspective, it's very interesting to see how the nobility lived at the time...and what they got up to!) I also have the DVD here but am a bit afraid to watch it because it's bound to be a let down after such a wonderful book.

Hello Dominique! Welcome to the group. I would recommend Emma first or, better yet, Persuasion. Happy reading!

message 157: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Hi Dominique :-).

I would go with Emma over Mansfield Park too. Or as Jeanette says, better yet, Persuasion or even Sense & Sensibility. But hey, I could be biased as Persuasion is my favourite Austen, while MP is probably my least fav.

message 158: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks people! I might go with Emma, because I saw the movie for Persuasion pretty recently, and may enjoy the book more a little later.

Dominique, I started reading Austen at about your age, and I still love her books. I recommend that you read either Sense and Sensibility or Northanger Abbey next. I loved Sense and Sensibility as a teenager, and my 16-year-old daughter thought Northanger Abbey was really funny.

Hi Dominique, I am so glad you are loving Austen.

And Karen and all, thanks for all the historical information -- I am going to add to my shelves from your references. I have been curious about those ladies, but didn't have anyone to guide me.

My fav biography of Bess, is Bess of Hardwick: Empire Builder by Mary S. Lovell, but there are a couple of others floating around that aren't bad :-).

Jamie,

I created a new thread under "The Tea Tray" and moved your post there. I don't know how many members read the Newbie Corner posts on a regular basis. :)

Jamie, those two groups sound COOL!! I have no idea if I'll have time to get much into them-- I have quite a few groups on here already!-- but I think I will probably still join when I get the chance. :)

Look for the links to these groups over on The Tea Tray folder. :)

Welcome Antia! I love your profile picture! I have already seen you posting on the discussions. Great that you jumped right in. Feel free to comment on the "Lady Susan" threads, as the discussion is still on-going.

Captain Sir Roddy, R.N. (Ret.) (captain_sir_roddy) A big hearty welcome to our great little group, Antia, from one of the Austen guys here! I too have noticed your postings and am glad that you've pitched right in with everyone! Happy reading! Cheers! Chris

Jody (spoonfulofhappyendings) | 5 comments Hi everyone :) My name is Jody, I'm 22 years old and an English literature student from the Netherlands. I've been fascinated by Jane Austen ever since I read P&P for the first time when I was 15 years old, and haven't been able to let go of her work ever since. I've already written my master thesis on the use of landscape in her novels and my next thesis will also focus on her. Glad to have found this group on Goodreads and looking forward to joining in the discussions! :)

Jody

message 174: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Jody! What an interesting Master's thesis! We just finished Lady Susan and are not actively discussing Jane Austen right now, but feel free to browse through and add to any of the older discussion threads. Or join us on our side reads. :)

message 175: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Hi Jody,

Years ago I did some work on how JA uses dancing in P&P but I've honestly never thought about her use of landscape. How interesting!

And welcome to the group :-).

Jenny

message 176: by Jody (new)

Jody (spoonfulofhappyendings) | 5 comments Thanks Jeannette and Jenny :) Dancing in P&P, that sounds like an interesting topic as well, what did you find out?? I'll definitely try to join you guys in the side reads... I saw something about Elizabeth Gaskell, so that already looks good ;)

Jody

Tasheena Smith | 2 comments Hey Everyone!

I'm 24 and live in Central Florida. I enjoy all of JA's books and love to talk about them. I have already read North and South but I can't wait to reread it again so I can discuss :D

Hi Tasheena! Welcome to the group! While you are waiting for the North and South discussion, be sure to check out our polls and our bookshelves. Feel free to add to any existing threads, too.

Lushbug | 29 comments hey guys-not sure where to post this...im soooo excited. the boyfriend is only taking me to Bath for the weekend!!!! only got two days there so i need to spend it wisely.must go to the costume museum and see the assembly rooms but apart from that im not sure where to go. anyone else been and have any good suggestions for must see places?

message 181: by Robin (last edited May 12, 2010 09:00AM) (new)

Robin (robin1129) | 306 comments I've never been :( but here's my thoughts --

Lansdown Crescent, the Royal Crescent, The Circus and Pulteney Bridge - all built about the time of Jane's residence. Bath has a Jane Austen Centre and a walk (I presume a sort of tour).

Got this info from a quick glance at Wikipedia. This, along with your ideas should give you a good case of 'museum feet'. lol And don't miss out on the baths itself.

Oh - and enjoy just being with the b/f! Hope he's a Janeite too!

Have fun! :)

message 182: by Paula (new)

Paula Hi All!

Not sure what to include for an intro so will do some basics - My name is Paula and I live/work near Chicago. I co-moderate the Victorians group and have seen several mentions made of this group. I left two groups to free up some time to join this one, as there are three books currently being discussed that I really want to read - N&S, Udolpho, and the Master & Commander series (Chris, I can't read any more of your reviews without starting this series myself! :)

Looking forward to discussing Austen, among others, with everyone!

message 183: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Paula! So glad to see you here! Chris has persuaded us to give O'Brian a try and I am really looking forward to reading them, too! Having you join is a bonus! :)
