Introduce Yourself Part Two

I've been lurking in the group for a few weeks but felt I'd go ahead and introduce myself. :)
I am a 31 year old, stay at home mommy (my son will be 3 in two weeks). I taught high school for a few years before he appeared. I am an aspiring author (with works in progress dealing with the middle ages, the Tudors, the Regency, and WWII).
I fell in love with Austen my senior year in high school and it sparked my love of British Literature (which in turn sparked my fascination with British history!). I have taught Austen to high schoolers but being a mommy now and not teaching, I plan on getting my Master's in English as I now want to teach college (and hopefully some Austen centered courses!).
I love her books (duh) for their great story lines, memorable characters, and that wonderful glimpse into the Regency world. I wish there was more respect and honor in today's society. My favorite books are "Sense and Sensibility" and "Emma." I enjoyed "Northanger Abbey" for its satire of gothic novels. Surprisingly, I have never read P&P (gasp I KNOW!). I had started it while in college but my copy disappeared somewhere when I moved out.
As you can tell by my profile picture, the 1996 version of "Emma" with the drool worthy Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley is my favorite Austen adaption, though I do love Emma Thompson's S&S and the 2007 "Northanger Abbey" with Felicity Jones.

Hey Robin! Welcome! I am glad you have de-lurked. It sounds like you have lots to offer with your background of teaching and your future plans. Your writing involves two of my favorite time periods (Regency and WWII). I am sure your time for that is limited with a small person! (I was a stay at home mom until my daughter went to school - hardest job I have ever held).
I hope you join in our discussion on Persuasion that will start September 1 and I look forward to seeing you around in any of the other discussions which catch your eye!

Hello Carolyn! Glad you are enjoying Persuasion. Looking forward to what you have to say!
Hello Carolyn! Glad you are enjoying Persuasion. Looking forward to what you have to say!
Welcome, Carolyn!! There is a lot to this group other than discussions of Austen's six novels, too, so enjoy everything you'll find here!

Welcome Amalie! There are lots of us who love to re-read all Austen's novels - over and over! ;-) Nice to have you in the group!
Good to have you here, Amalie! :)
Re-reading Austen is definitely in the cards for all of us here, and you picked the right time to join because we're discussing Persuasion right now. Hope to see you around the group!

Well, it's supposed to be pronounced like the French because my father had selected it from a French book but we here in Sri Lanka it is pronounced with the stress on the second syllable. So it's like \a-MA-lie\

I have to say my all-time Austen favorite is, like many others, Pride and Prejudice, although recently I re-read Sense and Sensibility and really enjoyed it much more this time around.

I don't think I've seen the P&P version you mention, but I have seen David Rintoul in other British productions, & I do think he'd make a fascinating Darcy!
Hmm ... I gotta check on Netflix ....

Rintoul does look the part of Darcy, but acts the role somewhat stiffly (especially in comparison to Colin Firth - no jumping into lakes for Rintoul, I can say that much!) I did think that Elizabeth Garvie was a great Elizabeth - same name, even! And some of the supporting characters were bang-on as well - the actress who plays Mrs. Bennett is absolutely fantastic in the part.

Would love to get hold of a copy of the 1980 Fay Weldon adaption. Saw it years ago and loved it, but of course everything has been eclipsed by Colin Firth since then so have often wondered if it stands the test of time. Something else to add to my never ending Wishlist...lol.
Welcome Danya :-).

I think I was 16 when I read my first Jane Austen novel (but I'd seen movie adaptations since I was ten years old or something. I think it was my mother's interest in Jane Austen movies that rubbed off on me, and when I was 16 I decided I wanted to read the novels (in English, of course. Otherwise it wouldn't be Jane's language). Pride and Prejudice was the first novel I read, and I loved it, but my favorite has to be Persuasion. It's just so romantic that two people love each other for such a long time, even though they don't even see each other during that many years. You don't forget your first love =)

It wasn't until I became an adult that I started to appreciate and ultimately love Jane Austen. I became interested in her works when I decided to put P&P 95 in my Netflix queue. Netflix suggested some other Austen adaptations and now I've watched at least one adaptation of most of her novels. I read P&P a few months after seeing P&P 95 and I read Persuasion earlier this year. I absolutely love Persuasion. I first fell in love with it when I saw the 2007 adaptation. When I read the book, the attachment was complete! It is not only my favorite Austen work but one of my favorite novels and Anne Elliot is definitely my favorite Austen heroine. The love story is beautiful and theme of second chances is touching.
A friend and co-worker brought me a complete Jane Austen series. So I'll eventually be able to read all the novels.
Welcome to the group Faith! Nice to have to you here. You have lots of company with those of us who also have Persuasion as our favorite novel. Pop into the ongoing discussion we have on the novel and let us know what you think!

I'm another newbie, although my love of Jane Austen goes back to when I was in High School. My name's Liz, I'm 25 and I live in sunny Queensland, Australia.
My first Jane Austen experience was watching Sense and Sensibility (the Emma Thompson one), when I was about 10 years old. I fell in love with it then and there. Sense and Sensibility would have to be my favourite movie converted from the novel.
My favourite novel is Persuasion. I just love it. All the way through you're thinking "please let Anne and Captain Wentworth get together in the end". Jane Austen doesn't disappoint us. I just love it. In fact I'm going away on my honeymoon soon, I'm even thinking of taking it with me then!
As a recent "Good Reads" addition (and it looks like and "addict" too) I'm very excited to be part of this group.

Welcome, Faith and Liz!! :)
I'm glad you both love Persuasion so much! Faith, but try watching the 1995 version, with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds--it's even better! And Hope, I know what you mean--GoodReads is addictive! XD
