Karlyne Landrum Well, I was going to ask you both to tell us all which ones are the best for the rest of us to read (because the only "sequel" I attempted to read annoyed me into snorting with disgust, which annoyed the other people at the table), but if it's going to involve therapy, never mind; I have too heavy a book-buying habit to be able to afford therapy!

Joy wrote: "3 months ago I was in the midst of a very tough semester and just needed a break of some entertaining, light reading and so I read
Jane Fairfax: The Secret Story of the Second Heroine in Jane Austen's Emma. From there it has been a very slippery slope, as I have read about 5 more Austen-type continuations or 'inspired by' novels. And I keep looking up titles at the library even though I have about 3 other books I am in the middle of and need to finish. No, I am not proud of myself, but consider my experience as a friendly warning. :) Beware! "

Whew! Thanks for the warning! I'll be careful! ;-)

Welcome, Kathy and Karen! You've come to the right Austen place. :) I have enjoyed the Austen sequels and retellings I've read so far, and I wasn't sure if I would in the beginning either. This forum is a good place for recommendations because we're fans like you!

Steve (slabrecque) | 4 comments Hi Everyone,

My name is Stephen (or Steve, whichever you prefer). I'm a 20 year old English major at Notre Dame. I've been reading Austen for a few years now, and I only have Mansfield Park and Emma left in my Austen queue. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite by far, and at the risk of being called a heretic; I have to say that (in my humble opinion) Sense and Sensibility is one of the few books to be outclassed by its film adaptation.

With that said, I'm happy to join this group as a rare male Austen enthusiast.

You are rare, Stephen, but not alone; and let me be one of the first to welcome you to the group! Good luck with your studies in the upcoming year, and I hope to see you here when you are able! Cheers! Chris

Els (Elss) | 10 comments Hello,
My name is Elinor, but call me Ellie. Mt favourite Jane Austen Books are Emma and Pride & Prejudice. I haven't yet read Mansfield Park, Persuasion or Northanger Abbey because I had such a hard job finding those books. I have seen most of the film adaptations of Jane Austen's books. No one else I know except from my Nain actually reads the Jane Austen books and it's nice to know that I can join a group of people on here that do.

Thanks for joining the group, Stephen and Ellie. I hope you both enjoying the discussions with your fellow Austen lovers. Stephen, we all share such different views that your thoughts on Sense & Sensibility are welcome to the mix. We are glad you are both here. Are you both enjoying your summer?

message 308: by Els (new)

Els (Elss) | 10 comments Yeah, kinda. It's not very warm here in Wales so I can't sunbathe but I am enjoying my time by watching as many Jane Austen films as possible and reading Jane Austen books too :)

message 309: by Steve (new)

Steve (slabrecque) | 4 comments Thanks Chris and Sarah,

Besides work, my summer has been great. Lots of golf, tennis and books of course. Its sad that I only have a couple weeks left but I'm ready to return to school.

That's not really so unusual as you'd think, for most authors. I have a whole category called Books Made Into Movies in my GR shelves, and on average, the movies are much better.

For a Jane Austen book, however, your statement is unique! I look forward to hearing your ideas about her other works. :)

Welcome!

Hi Ellieee! We sort of have something in common - my grandmother was from Wales. She was from Penarth near Cardiff. She came for a visit to the U.S. in 1911, met my grandfather and never went back! She was also a big Jane Austen fan. Nice to have you here.

message 315: by Els (new)

Els (Elss) | 10 comments Heey :) My dad lives in Penarth, we do have something kinda in common. My Nain and Bampi come from Penarth too. Have you ever been to Wales?

message 316: by Els (new)

No but I have always wanted to go. Someday! Closest I've been is London!

message 318: by Els (new)

Els (Elss) | 10 comments Wales is beautiful :) London is great too but it's not as green. I hope you get to come here someday, you'd love it here :)

WELCOME, Stephen and Ellie! I hope to hear from you a lot, Stephen, so that Chris has some male company! And it's so cool your name is spelled Elinor, Ellie--like Sense and Sensibility!

message 320: by Els (new)

Els (Elss) | 10 comments I know right! I think it's super cool and I love introducing myself as Elinor like in sense and sensibility :L Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me into this club, you've all been soo nice to me :)

J. Croft | 7 comments Hello everyone,
My first post for this group was made today in the 'JA Internet Scavenger Hunt'. I had a great time gathering the links, and I think I'm going to like it here.
I'm a P&P fanatic and excessively attentive to the 1995 BBC version. Persuasion is my second favourite, S&S and Emma tie for third place, followed by Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey.
My cat's name is Darcy; so it's not unusual to hear such exclamations as "Mr. Darcy just hacked up a fur-ball" or "Get off me, Darcy" or "Eew, Darce, you smell" ... definitely not quotes from Miss Austen.

My teenaged son's name is Darcy so around here it's "Darcy, have you unloaded the dishwasher?" and "Darce, are you up yet?" etc etc. As you say, definitely not Austen ;-D.

Welcome to the group!

message 328: by Susan (new)

Susan (soconnor031) Hi all,

I love everything Jane Austen. I have read all of her novels and am gearing up to read her smaller works such as Catherine soon. It's hard to rate them because it really depends on my mood. I think it's easier to rank the film adaptations! Of course, Mr. Firth is numero uno, though I love both adaptations of Emma, the Billy Piper version of Mansfield Park (I don't mind that she's blonde) Emma Scott's S&S, etc.

I am quite thankful that my husband doesn't hold my Austenism against me. My friend bought me a Jane Austen action figure for Christmas! If you are interested, I believe she found it on Amazon.

Anyway, I love Austen and am thinking about reading Persuasion again just so I can discuss it with all of you!

Robin (robin1129) | 306 comments Welcome Susan!

Welcome Susan! I have the Jane Austen action figure also - along with the coffee mug that asks "What would Jane do?"

I have to say Persuasion is my favorite novel but I do vary on the rest as to next favorite depending on my mood. I just loaded "Catherine" and all her early work on my Kindle to re-read. It has been years since I have done so. As for the films - no better way to spend a few hours! Glad to have you here.

message 331: by Susan (new)

Susan (soconnor031) If I drank coffee, I would totally want that.

I drink tea only - works just as well!

message 334: by Susan (new)

Susan (soconnor031) I don't drink tea either! Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with me. I bet it would work for water and soda though. hmmm.

message 335: by Robin (new)

Robin (robin1129) | 306 comments Mugs work wonderfully for hot cocoa.

Or, if it's too hot to think about that, they also do great for ice cream ....

Cafe Press site. Hold your plastic close - it is an evil site! ;-) There are mugs, t-shirts, SIGGs, totebags, bumper stickers........bad, bad.

J. Croft | 7 comments I was out of town for a few days but want to thank Jemidar, Megan, and Rachel for the warm welcome.

As I write this, I'm drinking from a Jane Austen mug my daughters gave me several years ago. Here's the link to Literary Luminaries:

http://www.luminarygraphics.com/coffe...

They also have a JA umbrella, tote bag, playing cards, etc.

My husband ordered the JA action figure for me, and it's now sitting on a nearby shelf. It makes me snicker to think of Austen as an action figure, as she comes with a writing desk and quill pen.

In addition to the above-mentioned mug, my wonderful daughters gave me the 10th anniversary edition of the 1995 BBC/A&E P&P DVD and the Unemployed Philosophers Guild 'Little Thinkers' Austen doll. Here's that link:

http://www.philosophersguild.com/inde...

She sits near the monitor and provides much-needed inspiration.

None of my family share in my love of all things Austen, but they support and enable it.

Enablers are good! My daughter is a huge Austen fan but is in law school right now so I email her bits and blog posts to keep her updated.

My husband just goes with it and understands when I speak of Jane just who that is! Action figures and dolls are essential to one's contentment!

message 342: by Susan (new)

Susan (soconnor031) My Jane is sitting next to my computer at work. I like to show her off every chance I get. I think I'm gonna invest in a coffee mug. I do drink hot chocolate.

Back to shopping, Most Honorable Miss Moderator!

message 345: by J. (new)

J. Croft | 7 comments Oh, oh! One's "quick succession of busy nothings" is about to include a shopping foray for Austen-inspired merchandise. I recently placed an order for a few JA trinkets as part of a prize for a contest draw, so I have to restrain myself for a while. **Sigh** "A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of."
