Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Hi Shea, Welcome to the group, you are sure to find some kindred spirits here as well, we all love Austen and I have also seen Lost in Austen and Pride and Prejudice video with Colin Firth, the 1995 version.

Hi Shea, I loved "Lost in Austen" too! So funny! Remember when she asked Mr Darcy to jump in the lake?

Paul Dinger | 16 comments Hi, my name is Paul. My obession with Jane Austen stared with Mansfield Park which I read with my work book club. They hated the book and I loved it. Anyway, I have went on to read almost all of them and enjoy each one. The only one I haven't read is Northanger Abbey which I just recently started.

Hi Shea and Paul. Welcome to the group. Very nice to have you hear. Looking forward to your comments.

Robin, I love the Colin Firth version of P&P. It was SO much better than the Kiera Knightly version. I loved how whole scenes in the miniseries had dialogue taken right from the book.

message 556: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Yes, I love that version of the Pride and Prejudice adaptation.

Welcome, Shea and Paul! So good to have you here!

Shea, I totally agree about the '95 version of P & P and I haven't had a chance to see Lost in Austen yet, but I can't wait. Paul, enjoy Northanger! You're in for a treat!

message 558: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) Yes, Northanger is one of my faves, also.

Welcome to the group Missy!

Pride and Prejudice is my fave, followed closely by Persuasion.

Hope you enjoy it here!

Katie (kassak) | 5 comments Hi!

I was happy to find this Jane Austen group here. And now I finally have the time to really write something. I have been a fan of Jane's since I was 12. It was that summer that I read Pride and Prejudice. I really only checked that book out because I had recently become interested in the classics and that was a title that I was familiar with. That following winter a bookstore here had a sale on classic novels. So I managed to buy for myself the rest of those. Persuasion was the last of her stories that I read and it is still my favorite. I have recently decided to start to read any sequels/prequels and other Jane Austen-based stories. I pretty much enjoy all of the film adaptations. I also managed to get all of the Franklin Mint Jane Austen figurines that they offered a few years ago. I am still not happy over the fact that they offered 2 different Elizabeths (why not at least one Jane?) and absolutely none of Catherine Morland or Fanny Price. I still would've liked to have seen figurines of Austen's heroes. If not that, a figurine featuring both the hero and heroine of each story would've been very nice. I was a member of JASNA (when I could afford it at the time) and managed to get to at least one of their Annual General Meetings. Hopefully in the not-so-distant future I will be able to join again. I would love to get to another one of the JASNA events. The ball after dinner was so much fun!

Hi Kassak! I am glad you have joined us!

message 564: by Beth (new)

Beth (crazytarantelle) Hello all!

My name is Beth and I have been completely in love with Jane Austen's novels since I first read them (more like devoured and then re-read to savor) when I was twelve.

My grandma pressed a worn copy of Pride and Prejudice into my hands as we were leaving after visiting her for a week. She whispered that it was something to pass the time during the long car ride home.

From the very first sentence I was hooked and there's been no going back. I've read them every year since, sometimes more then once. It's a part of who I am, I really.

message 565: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group, Beth. Nice to have you here!

Welcome, Kassak and Beth!!

I apologize for not welcoming you sooner--I have been ill. I hope to join JASNA soon as well, Kassak, and that is such a sweet story about your grandmother, Beth.

It's great to add you to our group!

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) That is a great story, so like grandmas to impart their knowledge in a sweet tender way,

message 568: by vard (new)

vard | 28 comments Hi, I'm fairly new around here, and it occurred to me that this is the only group on Goodreads who would be likely to appreciate my profile photo!

I can't think of any novelist in the English language who has ever had a more profound understanding of human nature, or expressed that understanding in cleverer language. Jane really was the best.

message 569: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Vard - Your profile picture is wonderful (and oh so true)! You are in good company here - Jane is the best! Welcome to the group!

vard | 28 comments Thank you! I bought that T-shirt at the JASNA meeting in October, here in Portland. The moment I saw it I knew I had to have it.

By the way, is anyone else from here going to go to the JASNA meeting in Ft. Worth this October? I am already making my plan.

message 571: by [deleted user] (new)

There are a lot of people in the Houston, Texas JASNA chapter (me included) who are hoping to go!

Welcome, Vard!

You are so correct--Jane is unbeatable! You're definitely in the right group. :)

message 573: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) | 48 comments Hello: I just joined this group. I live in Victoria, BC, Canada. I first found Jane Austen after watching P&P 95, and have seen every movie and mini-series I could find, have read all the major six novels and many sequels and fan fiction. My favourite novel is Persuasion (since I love the character of Anne). I see there's lots of interesting threads to look at, and I will have fun here!

message 574: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for joining us Lorraine! It is nice to have you here. I read (school forced read) Emma a thousand years ago back in high school. Then I saw the 95 P&P and basically followed the same route you have. Look around and please tell us what you think!

message 575: by vard (new)

vard | 28 comments It's so interesting to see all the ways people come to Austen. I read all the books 30 years ago for the first time but didn't see any of the movies until very recently -- like the last five or ten years at most. I think Emma Thompson's S&S and the Gwyneth Paltrow Emma were the first two of the movies for me. I didn't see the 1995 P&P until 2007! And it was only a year ago that I saw the 1940 P&P for the first time.

Welcome, Lorraine!

Persuasion is a VERY close second to Pride and Prejudice among Austen's novels for me, and I love Anne too! And that adaptation of P & P is wonderful, isn't it?

I hope you'll like this group!

message 577: by Roslyn (new)

Roslyn (rozky) | 8 comments Hello, my name is Roslyn. I'm an Austen fan in Texas. I don't remember the first Austen novel I read, it must have been for British Lit. in high school. But I struggled through Jane Eyre, and figured Pride & Prejudice was the same... so I just read the Cliff's Notes. (I know, a travesty!) But then I picked up a copy of P&P at a used book store 4 years ago, got my head into reading between the lines of Jane's writing and picking up all the subtleties and nuances, and then I couldn't put it down! I devoured all her novels as quickly as I could read them. And I've been hooked ever since! I'm excited to have found ya'll, and am looking forward to all the fun discussions!
Cheers! Roslyn

message 580: by Isabel (new)

Isabel (isabelc) | 13 comments Hello, I'm Isabel and live in Shropshire, England. I'm not quite sure when I first read a Jane Austem , but I must have been about 12. I remember seeing a bit of Ang Lee's Sense and Sensiility on the TV and begging to be allowed up to watch it. And it started from there!
My favourite book is Persuasion (overall favourite as well as favourite Jane Austen), because of Anne's character (a bit like me) and how that after all the time she still loves Captain Wentworth, and it turns out he does as well - a perfect love story. Unusually I don't rate Pride and Prejudice as highly as most people, and is the bottom half of my list - along with Emma (she is so annoying).
It's so good to be able to talk to people who think the same as me about books in general, and Jane Austen in particular.

message 581: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Isabel! Persuasion is my favorite also - although I like the rest very much also! All of us here love to read too and we all love Jane Austen! Jump in and share your thoughts!

That adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is one of the best Austen films out there, and I adore Persuasion too!

Glad to have you here!

message 583: by Namida... (new)

Namida... | 19 comments Hello everyone! I'm from Cairo, Egypt. i've been a Jane Austen fan since i was 13 when i read Pride and Prejudice, i had trouble understanding it since i was new to the whole classics section in the library. when i look at myself back then, it feels like a lifetime since i fell in love with her writing. Where i stand now at 17 is one book away from finishing all her novels (and it's no other than the very first Sense and Sensibility!) i'm actually delaying it intentionally so that i don't face the truth of having finished all her phenomenal books.
my favourite book of course is still Pride and Prejudice, followed by Mansfield Park, then Persuasion, Emma, Northanger Abbey.
i'm really glad you made that group, please accept me as a part of you ^^

message 584: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello Namida! Welcome to the group! Once you read all the novels, you can re-read them - we all do that! We are happy you have joined us. Please jump into the discussions and let us know what you think!

Welcome, Namida!

Sense and Sensibility is fabulous, you'll love it. I know it can be hard to feel like you're saying goodbye to Jane but Megan's right--that's what re-reading is for! :)

I hope you'll enjoy this group and participate as much as you can!

CT (claudiasbooks) | 9 comments Hello! My name is Claudia. I'm an aspiring nursing student from the Los Angeles area. I fell in love with Jane Austen when I first saw the 1940 black and white screen adaptation (which is the best one to watch first in my opinion!) at 12 years old. I have read every Jane Austen book except Northanger Abbey. I love Pride and Prejudice "sequels" and watching the 5 hour movie version with Colin Firth at least twice a year with a bunch of girlfriends :)

message 587: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Claudia! Welcome to the group! You have found like minded people here! Lots of us have mandatory viewing of the classic P&P every year. Look around and join the discussions and let us know what you are reading and thinking!

Welcome, Claudia!

Pride and Prejudice is my fave Austen novel--and novel of all time--and that adaptation is my fave, too1

I adore Northanger, so I highly recommend it. It was the last Austen I read, too, and it is now one of my faves of hers. It's just so FUN!

(BTW: I accepted your friend request!)

Glad to have you here!

message 591: by Elysam (new)

Elysam Hi everyone! I'm Elysam and I'm a 20 year old studying for a BA in anthropology and a BA in archaeology. Early in high school I wanted to read some of Austen's work, but never got around to it. My senior year I read a novel, the name of which I no longer remember, where the heroine goes to the library specifically in search of a Jane Austen novel; after that book, I jumped into Emma and have been working my way through the rest of Jane Austen's writing (around my studies of course) ever since. I'm looking forward to the discussions.

Georgianna | 1 comments Good day!

I'm a new comer on Goodreads, and the first group I joined was this Jane Austen's group.
It's quite simple: Jane Austen has changed the way I carry myself as a woman.
I read all of her novels and though Pride and Prejudice is my all time favorite, Persuasion has a really special place in my heart...

message 595: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 09, 2011 04:25AM) (new)

Sybille! I am glad our little group was the first you joined! We all love Austen's work and feel her influence. Please jump in the discussions - welcome!

message 596: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Consiglio-Wolff (jrzgirl_1967) | 30 comments Jane Austen surely has done wonders for all of us who love her novels! I agree, I feel her influence as well. In her novels, civility is not dead! In the real world of today, it is a thing of the past we can only visit in the work of Jane Austen.

PS. I love the novels in your reading list. We seem to be on the same page!

And you're right, Lisa Anne-- it does certainly feels sometimes like chivalry is dead!

Neha (nehashah) Hi,

I'm absolutely new to jane austen and have never read her.. please recommend the best book to start with :)
have put up a poll on my blog.. will try to read all in order of popularity

message 599: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Neha - welcome. Start with a classic - Pride and Prejudice. Just my opinion! ;-)

message 600: by [deleted user] (new)

Pride and Prejudice is definitely the most known of Austen's work, next to Sense and Sensibility, I think. Still, I would go with Megan; P&P is a great start into the Austen world! =)
