Erin (pinkhairerin) | 5 comments Hello all! My name is Erin. I've been a Jane Austen fan for as long as I can remember. I believe I was introduced to her works some time in middle school and would constantly watch P&P with Colin Firth with my grandmother and Aunt when I would visit them. Then in undergrad was lucky enough to take an English class where I got credit to read all of Austen's famous books along with some of her letters. Lately, I've been reading newer fiction based off Austen's works. I am currently reading Midnight In Austenland and I just finished Austenland (the first book). My Aunt also made me watch Death Comes To Pemberley recently. Fun stuff!

Janet Aylmer (janetaylmer) | 27 comments Erin

Glad to meet you. I too have seen the film of "Death comes to Pemberley", from the book written by the famous British crime author P D James, who was also a great Jane Austen fan, and who died at the end of last year.

In this BBC web article about the film - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainme..., my novel "Darcy's Story" is mentioned.

Amanda (amandabookworm) I'm Amanda from the U.S. I am a Jane Austen fan, and I love the movie adaptations of her books also. I joined the group so I could discuss all things Austen with other fans.

Kenny Sullins (misterkenye) | 1 comments Hello! Kenny here. I've enjoyed Jane Austen for years now! Needing to reread soon. I've watched some of the film adaptions too but need to see more of those. Not to mention I'm open to good fanfiction/variations/etc. of her work. I also have a constantly growing interest in the Regency era.

I feel I may be one of the few guys here, but I don't mind, haha! I mean if George IV could enjoy her works then so can I! (I have a deep interest in him not to mention some personality traits in common, even though Austen didn't much care for him :P)

Anyways, hello to you all and I hope I enjoy my time around this group!

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 169 comments A male "Janite." Very cool. Kenny.

It will be good to get a perspective from a man who actually likes JA. I've seen some comments from men in another group who don't "get" what the fuss is all about.

message 1368: by QNPoohBear (new)

QNPoohBear | 737 comments Hi Kenny,It's nice to see male Janeites realize why we all love her so much. Too many people dismiss the books and mere chick lit or don't understand the subtle nuances that make the books so wonderful. The queen of Regency romances was Georgette Heyer. She wrote somewhere around 30 Regency set romances/romantic comedies/historical romance novels. Other writers I like are Clare Darcy, Daisy Vivian, Carola Dunn, Barbara Metzger, Regina Scott, Jude Morgan and anyone who writes funny Regency romances but has done their research on the time period to make the characters behave realistically for the time.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 169 comments QNPoohBear, thanks for this list of authors! :)

Emerson Hawthorne | 2 comments I've been a Jane Austen fan since middle school and come back to her constantly. My two favorites are Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion but I also find Northanger Abbey diverting. Catherine Morland always makes me wonder if I was ever that young.

Vatsa | 3 comments Hi everyone! I'm still figuring out whether I'm a Janeite or not- i liked P&P very much, but Persuasion not so much.. So i hope it's okay if I'm not a hardcore fan.

Currently reading S&S, my third Austen, and enjoying it so far.

Thank you, Rachel.

And to Vatsa: I am a hardcore fan but that happened gradually as I read her works more and more and learned to appreciate it. For example, I used to not understand, and therefore even disliked, Northanger Abbey. But now, it is one of my favorites. Reading it at different times in my life has really helped me to appreciate all of her works. So I understand where you are coming from, I think.

Fanny Mills | 6 comments Hi! Glad that there is a forum for us Janeites! Have read all of her work multiple times and I never tire of them- always find something new in them. I don't think I've ever found a funnier or more romantic author, but there are certainly some Heyer books that I adore along the same lines. Between reading and writing, I definitely spend a lot of time in Regency England!

Oana | 5 comments Hello everyone! My name is Oana, I'm from Romania and I love P&P and Jane Austen. I am searching for books like P&P or North&South (by Elizabeth Gaskell). I love the stories where first the couple dislike each other and then they fall in love. Can you help me find some similar books?

Tank you!

WELCOME, Oana!

The couple who bickers to cover up their attraction to each other is a great storyline to read and watch, isn't it? They are some of my favorites too. One of the best is Beatrice and Benedick in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. If I think of any more, I'll let you know.

Glad to have you with us!

message 1392: by Marquise (new)

Marquise | 22 comments Hi!

I am a new member of the club, but by no means a newcomer to Jane Austen, whom I read in my early adolescence. S&S was my first book, and I was instantly fascinated, I wore my copy to dust from so much reading back then! To date, I still have a soft spot for that novel, and collect editions and illustrations for it.

Unfortunately, my next read, P&P, proved such a letdown that it practically killed any wish to continue with her books. So until the past month, those two were the only ones I read. I have a vague recollection of having started a third book, but I apparently didn't finish it or just forgot entirely because I cannot even remember which one it was or what about!

Thanks to some nice reviewers and friends here, I decided to give Jane another chance and joined the "Persuasion" buddy read. Haven't regretted that ever, it was an excellent read, and it rekindled the desire to read more of her, so I've dusted off my copies of her novels (have all of them) and am going to read them all. Currently, I'm buddy-rereading P&P in book and graphic novel adaptation. We'll see how it fares this time.

Ceri | 68 comments I didn't like Northanger Abbey much the first time I read it, but I reread it again after many years and I loved it. I'm not the same person I was as a teen so it makes sense that I might respond to a book differently. I hope the same is true for you!

Great, Oana! I would also mention Ron and Hermione in the Harry Potter series but you've probably read those. I can think of tons of this type of couple on film (Han and Leia in Star Wars, Doug and Kate in The Cutting Edge) but I will have to wrack my brain to remember more from literature.
