Hey everyone. I've just been catching up - just got internet hooked up again a couple of days ago so I'm Back! Glad to see so many people joining. I'm excited to finally be able to announce that we now have more group members than the "old, original, other" Dean Koontz group. Thanks to Jason of the Borg for directing people here from there. I'm not in the old group anymore but I check in from time to time to see if there are new posts.

Thanks for the mention of the Stephen White group Christine :-) I'm also a big John Saul fan - I have to read everything new he releases even if I'm sometimes disappointed. He's taking a break this year and not releasing anything new. My favorites by John Saul are The Homing, The Manhattan Hunt Club and the Blackstone Chronicles serial thriller. I've also seen Tedd Dekker's books around they seem to be in the Young Adult or Christian Fiction sections and I haven't given him a try - I'm open for recommendations though. Sorry, this is a bit off topic just wanted to put in my response to earlier posts that I didn't see until now :-)

Anyway, everyone, stick around for more fun - Welcome to the group and thanks for joining. We currently have a group membership of 160!

Hey Louann & friends, I can't resist responding to this, but I'm gonna try to keep our discussion on topic so head over to our "Other Authors" discussion and we'll talk about John Saul, Tedd Dekker and Other Authors. Below is the link. see ya there in the newer posts.

I read House by Dekker and another writer and it was OK. He does insert a LOT of Christian views, and is considered a 'Christian' writer, his books are available at Christian bookstores. The book was OK but the overly religious punch you in the face ending ruined what otherwise would have been a great read. House was very...creepy.

When I found out I was pregnant I had to rid my house of all Saul. I still can't read him and have nightmares about waking up w/ my daughter standing over me watching me sleep. When I wake up and she's really there, I'm sure she's going to kill me. So yeah, I agree he REALLY has some issues w/ children!

Sue | 1 comments Hello, everyone! I am Sue from Arizona. I own several of Koontz' books; my daughter has the rest. Since I am a dog person, I love that he has dogs in his books, and Watchers will remain one of my favorites of all time. However, my favorite thing about Koontz is his occasional genius. He has written a few books that are absolutely stunning in their depth and (sometimes) complexity. Dark Rivers of the Heart is probably the best example. From the Corner of His Eye is another. I keep hoping and praying for another in that category. In them meantime, I read whatever he writes and shake my head when he "doesn't meet his potential." I really prefer Stephen King, even though he isn't a dog person!

Welcome, Sue. I'm sure quite a few of us will agree with at least one of those two statements. I know I at least agree with the former, if not (yet) with the latter.

We'll see. I won't say that I will or won't, as I have only read 3 of his books so far.

message 414: by Maciek (new)

Maciek (pan_maciej) | 666 comments To be honest, the only Koontz and King comparisons I encountered were done by the fans of the former and featured mostly unjust criticism of the latter. I don't think that it's possible to compare the two authors, as their output is so vastly different. They share nothing except for the fact that both were typed as horror authors early in their careers.

Christine Maciek wrote: "To be honest, the only Koontz and King comparisons I encountered were done by the fans of the former and featured mostly unjust criticism of the latter. I don't think that it's possible to compare ..."

I agree with you. Their writing styles are very different. For me, Stephen King has always been a favorite. I feel he can draw me into a story and keep me there much better than Dean Koontz. King is able to make the unbelievable, believable for me. I have never been able to figure out why he gets snubbed for his ability as a writer. I know its by people who have never read his novels but that label as a horror writer does come with limitations. Its too bad.

I never said anything about comparing their writing here--you did. All I said is that there is a possibility I will like King better as an author after I read more of his books, which is a statement I could make about any author (though I suspicion it has a higher probability of being true for King than most others). Contradictory to what you said, I have mostly encountered King fans talking about how he is better than Koontz (see the Stephen King Fans group for evidence). In those situations (and in the opposite situations), I always take the same stance you just did--that it is not fair to compare their writing (it's fine to like one better than the other, but not to say one writes better than the other overall, as each has his strengths and weaknesses).

message 417: by Maciek (new)

Maciek (pan_maciej) | 666 comments I never said you did. What I did was describe my encounters with Koontz fans who told me countless times about how pathetic King is when compared to Koontz.
Not so much the other way, though. I wonder why that is.

Where have you encountered this? As I said, I've encountered the opposite.

I've never been to that site (or any other Koontz forum outside of goodreads, for that matter). I don't understand it either and try to stop it whenever I encounter it.

Maciek (pan_maciej) | 666 comments I don't see the point, but from my experience you can't talk about Koontz without King popping up sooner or later, no matter in what context. I find it funny when people say they love the one but hate the other, as the two guys are propably buddies.

I respectfully disagree, King is SOOOOOO WORDY. I think it's the German in me, but I just read his books and think couldn't he have just said, 'he walked across the desert instead of needing 800 pages to say,'he walked across the desert''? I prefer his movies for the most part, but even they can be 6 hrs long. sometimes I just want to scream GET TO THE POINT! However I do agree that Koontz seems to be going that route too, The Book of Counted Sorrows, is a major case in point. When the 'intro' to a book is more than half of said book, it's no longer an intro, in my opinion. I think the Face was the last Koontz book I really liked. That makes me so sad. He was always my go to author. Now I find I'm turning to others. I still read everybook he writes, but sometimes they sit on the shelf for a long time before I get to them.

I am so sad too. I am just crying and my eyes are falling out. Emily, don't give up. I'm sure the next one will be better. Don't despair, What The Night Knows is here! (almost)

Ksaza | 2 comments Hello my screen name is ksaza. I have collected all but five of Dean Koontz works many under his original pen names. The only ones I have not read are the ones under pen name Deana Dwyer. Apparently these were only written to keep him and his wife fed :D I couldn't pick a favorite although I love the "Odd Thomas" series.

Welcome to Koontzland Delphyne! :-)No explanation required, but I know for me one not so excellent book can turn me off an author for a while - we're happy to help you catch up :-) We're reading The Face and Darkfall as a group in November - feel free to join us in our group discussions & thanks for Joining our group of Koontzlanders!

Jen (delphyne) Thanks Dustin! The Face was one of the last Koontz books I read (other than the Odd Thomas books). I'm pretty sure I've read Darkfall, too, but I've forgotten most of the details of even my most favorite Koontz books, so I'll try to jump in on one of them.
