Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I've joined these groups (King and Koontz) because I want to discuss their books. Good, bad, ugly, whatever. My joining an author dedicated group doesn't mean that I automatically think that they can do no wrong as an author, or that their every written word is gold.

I think the issue with the King group, Lori, is that people came to feel as if they couldn't express any opinion except fawning adoration without you "defending" King by essentially yelling that King doesn't write bad books. I get what you were getting at, but I will be honest and say that it felt very argumentative at times.

I'm a King fan, and I've been one since I was a kid, almost since I could read, so I feel I've earned the right to say that a particular book was better than another without feeling that my opinion is negated or wrong because someone feels differently.

We've all got opinions, as I stated before, and the very nature of opinions means that they are correct only to the person holding them. I don't think it's fair to ask someone to keep quiet about their opinion because someone else doesn't agree, especially when that's the point of the forum that we're in.

*shrug* If I'm misunderstanding the point of this group, please let me know, and I'll be on my way.

You have not misunderstood in the least, Becky. Just as I will defend Maciek's right to provide negative opinions about Koontz and his writing (and share my own on occasion), I will defend Lori's write to defend Koontz and his writing (and do my fair share of defending of him/it too). I hope everyone will continue to share his/her opinions/thoughts as has always been done, and in a tone of civility and respect for one another. :-)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Absolutely, Jason. Lori has every right to defend the authors as she sees fit, I was merely commenting on how the method came across at times, I was not saying that she was wrong in any way to do so. :)

Yes, I know, I was just being explicit for the sake of everyone.

Yes, of course. Though having respect for someone does not mean that person is above criticism or that we must have respect for his/her ideas--only that we be willing to listen to them and appraise them fairly. :-)

Thanks for Joining Nathan, btw you are welcome to promote your book in the folder for other authors, groups and books (at the bottom of the group page). You can either start a new thread or mention it in an existing thread. Also feel free to comment on Brother Odd since you're currently reading it :-)

Nathan Henrion thanks Dustin...I'll just hang out for a bit before I start trying to get you guys signed up with Amway :)
At least that's what I feel like when people keep harping on me to check out their book.

Plus, it seems kinda presumptuous to hock my book on the Koontz page :)

I've heard other moderators have had problems with authors just joining, blatantly advertising their book and not really participating - I don't think that's gonna be a problem with you :-) So, as a group member who is an author, I just wanted to let you know there's a place for you to mention your book if you want. People might be interested so I'll just take the liberty myself and post a link to your book in that folder :-)

message 319: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Henrion I think about the scene in Happy Gilmore when Stubbs mentions that Happy is a good golfer..."thanks, but I'm a hockey player." I may have wrote something, but I'm just a reader. Here to read!

Christine Hey Everyone! I've been hearing great things about your group from Dustin. I've been wanting to join for a while and your group read of A Bad Place looks like the perfect opportunity.

I'm from California. I read ALOT, just about everything but I really like paranormal, fantasy and horror. Some things you never grow out of. I've read a few Dean Koontz books but its been a while.

Patricia Rockwell (par2323) | 5 comments Hi, I'm a long-time Koontz fan, having discovered "From the Corner of His Eye" years ago and then practically devouring every Koontz novel I could find after that. I would say my favorite is "False Memory" and my least favorite is--any of those Frankenstein ones or any where people turn into monsters. I'm presently reading "Relentless" and enjoying it a lot.

Welcome Patricia! I love Relentless!!!! I've already read it twice :-) Based on your comment, I bet you don't like Midnight - if so, don't worry it wasn't one of my favorites either :-) but I do like the Frankenstein series.

message 330: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Rockwell (par2323) | 5 comments Dustin,
I tend to like the Koontz books that are mostly "realistic" (whatever that is) with just a hint of the "other worldly." My major problem with Koontz's books is that I've read so many, so fast, that I have a terrible time keeping the plots with the right titles. You must know, what's the one with the dog who could read? I loved that one. I guess any of the ones with dogs in them I love.

Patricia

Watchers - Dean's most popular book!

Ha Ha Are any of them really realistic? Personally, I can't read more than two Koontz titles in a row and maintain my sanity :-) Have you read Life Expectancy or Cold Fire - those are two of my favorites. We're reading The Bad Place as a group in May and that's a really good one too.

message 332: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Rockwell (par2323) | 5 comments Loved "Life Expectancy" but have to admit I don't think I've heard of "Cold Fire" although I've read quite a few that I've forgotten. There's a fairly recent one that also has a psychic sort of dog in it--one of the characters I think has some sort of strange artistic ability too. There's a young couple (I think the dog belongs to the girl) and they are trying to escape (I think) from a trio of hoodlums. There's lots of car chases in it. I may have some of the plot lines confused. Do you know the one I mean? I loved it. I'm embarassed I can't remember the title--but as I said--I remember the stories and tend to forget the titles.

Patricia

That's one I need to re-read. I enjoyed reading it when it first was published, but I've forgotten some of the details :-) Several people were disappointed with that particular book, but I don't remember feeling that way so I need to see what I think on second reading.

btw, besides our monthly group read, we do have a mini-group read program that we've tried to start - if there are 3 group members (or more) interested in reading the same Koontz title, we'll feature it on our group page as a mini-group read.

Emily (emahh1) | 66 comments HI! I'm Emily and I have been reading Koontz for about 20 years. The first book I read was The Mask and I was blown away. Love love loved it. As I tend to do I swooped in and read everything I could find by him and now have 58 of his books I recently rebought about 15 after (GASP) losing an ENTIRE box of books in a move across the country. Some where someone found a whole lot of great books. While there have been some hits (the Bad Place, and of course Watchers and Lightning and I LOVE the Face) and misses (didn't care for the Darkest Evening of the Year, or Icebound) as a whole I am a huge fan and get very excited when I hear he has a new book out.

L.J. (ljsellers) | 2 comments I'm L.J. Sellers, journalist and author of the Detective Jackson mystery/suspense series. THE SEX CLUB and SECRETS TO DIE FOR are getting rave reviews, and THRILLED TO DEATH will be out in late August.

When I first started writing novels, I had little time to read, but I'm trying to change that. Participating in group reads/discussions motivates me, and I enjoy the differing perspectives. It also helps me decide what to read next among the hundreds of terrific books out there.

I used to read Dean Koontz all time, then got away from him. It will be fun to start up again.

If you want to mention or discuss your books, you can start a new thread or post in a current one in the Other Authors Books and Groups folder (located at the bottom of the discussion board)

Michael Pischak (michaelpischak) | 13 comments Hey everyone, I am Mike. I have always loved Koontz and always will. I had not read Koontz for a while since the last Frankenstein cam out. Though I lean toward his more supernatural novels, I picked up Relentless a few months ago and absolutely loved it! So, I have made it my goal to read absolutely every Koontz book by the end of 2010. this is what I have read so far:

Lightning
Odd Thomas
Watchers
Forever Odd
Brother Odd
The Husband
Life Expectancy
Phantoms
The Good Guy
From the Corner of His Eye
Fear Nothing
Odd Hours
The Door to December
The Taking
By the Light of the Moon
The Darkest Evening of the Year
Prodigal Son
Hideaway
Cold Fire
Seize the Night
City of Night
Darkfall
Winter Moon
Your Heart Belongs to Me
Relentless
Dead and Alive
In Odd We Trust
Breathless
The Book of Counted Sorrows

I am curious to hear what everyone's favorite Koontz book is and why? Thought this might be great fuel for discussion. Mine would be either Watchers, Odd Thomas or the Christopher Snow series. Probably Fear Nothing.

I am surprised to hear you say the From the Corner of his Eye is one of your favorites. I got about 463 pages into it, and nothing had happened with Barty Lampion yet and I got frustrated. According to a survey on Koontz's website Barty is considered by many to be one of the best heroes of Koont'z books. Should I finish this book? I got impatient and started reading another book, but I could always go back to it.

Welcome to the group Michael! I also loved Relentless, but our opinion is not shared by everyone :-) I think people who love Christopher Snow tend to love Odd Thomas and vice versa. Well, with all the titles you've already read, it wouldn't be too hard to meet your goal of reading every Koontz book this year, although some of his older titles might be hard to find. Be sure to check out our other discussion threads on Favorites and Book Collecting etc. For me, I think I'm keeping Life Expectancy at the top of my list of favorites, but that is subject to change :-)

message 349: by Michael (new)

Michael Pischak (michaelpischak) | 13 comments From the Corner of His Eye? Okay, I will admitm the writing is beautiful, filled with wonderful imagery, superb diction and amazing themes. I even came close to crying during some parts. But I lost patience around page 470. Nothing was happening with Barty. I read from the survey On Koontz's website that Barty Lampion was voted one of the top heroes. So, maybe I got my hopes up too much. But more than 3/4 of the way through the book and the kid is still 5 and hasn't even heard of the villain? Come on! Please let me know if you think I am missing out. Explain to me what it is you like about the novel. I am more that willing to give the book another chance. In fact, I plan on going back to reading it today becasue of all of the comments by people in this group who say it is one of their favorites. Now I have to find out why!

message 350: by Michael (new)

Michael Pischak (michaelpischak) | 13 comments I loved Life Expectancy too. Especially on audio. That narrator was absolutely amazing!
