The story takes place in turn of the 20th century Boston and focuses on four young socialites--the Campbell cousins, Evangelina and Peter, and their closest friends, Elaine Hasborow and Colin Gray. Evangelina, who is orphaned and later left a large sum of money from her well-to-do aunt, is forced to develop a sense of self within the elitist social circle of her aunt and uncle's. It is, in many ways, a coming-of-age novel that illustrates the relationships amongst the friends as well as their privileged and sometimes overbearing families.

To me, the most important part of a book, is the first chapter. It’s the first part of the story that the reader is witnessing. Without a gripping and compelling first chapter; the reader gets bored and unfortunately the book gets tossed to the shelves.
This book grabbed me from the first few pages. It starts off with a little history to the story-line; dating back to the 1800′s, with; of course, a little magic involved. After a few pages, the story picks up in present day, located in Cambridge England. I will admit, the first chapter had me in tears. Though, at a glance, the series appears to be written for a young audience, it does not speak exclusively to young people.
