Alyssa Ivy (alyssaroseivy) | 6 comments Hi, I'm Alyssa Rose Ivy and I have a new YA Fantasy novel out.

Beckoning Light (The Afterglow Trilogy) by Alyssa Rose Ivy
Beckoning Light

As Charlotte steps through the gate, she has a strong feeling that nothing will ever be the same again.

Moving back to South Carolina after three years away, Charlotte knows she’s going to have to face people from her past and adjust to a new high school, but she’s completely unprepared for what else waits for her in Charleston.

Drawn through an old garden gate, Charlotte discovers a hidden world where she meets Calvin, a boy to whom she is inexplicably attracted. As Charlotte is pulled deeper into this hidden world, it’s up to her older brother Kevin to rescue her. No matter how hard Kevin tries, the rescue depends upon Charlotte fighting her intense feelings for Calvin while mastering a set of abilities that she has only just discovered she possesses.

Thanks!

Reading these posts has been great, there are so many books I'll have to check out!

Anyta Sunday | 5 comments Ohh, wow, so great to see this thread! There sound like some wonderful books that have been written.

I too am an author, and have just recently published VEINED, a paranormal romance:

*

It could be worse for Sylva Lark. She could be dead. A coma was nothing to that. Or her family moving across country for the treatment, leaving her with a big blue mark on her back.
She can handle it.
Mostly.
Except the mark glows and tingles, especially whenever transition helper Atticus Plot (Attic) is close by. She suspects he’s hiding something, and when she stumbles across a torn body bearing the same spiral marking as her own, that suspicion is confirmed.
After a few shaves with death, the truth finally comes out and the battles begin.
But not all her fights are external; her biggest one is the decision she has to make between doing the right thing for world and giving up her beloved family for good.

*

It can be found at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/VEINED-Guardian... and Barnes and Noble http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/veine... if you're interested.VEINEDAnyta Sunday

Sounds interesting, I particularly like that the protagonist is male--refreshing, actually.

Cool, I'll have a look-see.

Additionally, nice cover-art!

Todd Tystad (toddrtystad) Anyta, your comment made my day!

I'm thinking of doing research into the breakdown of female vs male protagonists, their appeal to female vs male readers, and whether this is relevant in the effort get males to read more. In the meantime, I'm still writing about my main character Asa and hoping that an audience, male and female, will find him.

My cover art was done by a brilliant graphic artist named Glendon Haddix at Streetlight Graphics. He is simply amazing. Thanks for noticing.

Anyta Sunday | 5 comments Hey Todd,

Yeah, this is really interesting, I think. From my experience, boys TEND to prefer reading books written from a boy's perspective, but girls are more flexible, reading from either.

Personally, I like the mix. I love to read a story from the mind and view of a girl, but I find it probably that much MORE fascinating to read from a guy's--Maybe it has something to do with the mystery element? I still haven't figured you out, lol.

Glendon Haddix, just found it: http://streetlightgraphics.com/ Nice. Cool.

All the best for your writing, Todd.

Alyssa Ivy (alyssaroseivy) | 6 comments Hey Todd and Anyta,

Anyta Sunday | 5 comments Alyssa,

I'm curious, since you write from both perspectives (and being a female writer), how does your writing differ when writing from a boy's poin-of-view? That is, what things more (or less) do you consider when setting yourself in a young adult guy's mind?

Additionally, what do the boys think of the boy character? Do they read him as authentic?

Curious, and thanks for participating in the discussion,

Anyta

Alyssa Ivy (alyssaroseivy) | 6 comments Hi Anyta,

When I first started writing Beckoning Light , it took some time to get into the male voice, but it just got easier and more natural with time. As with all characters, I think the authenticity was strengthened by loosely basing the voice on people I know. As I work on the second book in the trilogy, I actually find writing from Kevin's (the brother's)perspective is at times easier than writing from the female perspective.

Many male readers have given me positive feedback about Kevin, and say that he seems very real.

Alyssa

Todd Tystad (toddrtystad) There are a lot of experts who say that a writer either has an "ear for dialogue" or doesn't. Alyssa, I'm sure that you have this gift and thank goodness you're making use of it as a writer. Now you've got me curious about Beckoning Light. It'll have to go on my list.

Anyta, glad to see that you like the art that Glendon Haddix creates. Isn't he just brilliant?

Hi Janelle, Although written for YA, I find that it is adults of all ages who enjoy this novel. The novel is unique in that it addresses YA issues that are rarely talked about, but not in a didactic way. Since you're of Swiss decent, you'll like it all the more. Let me know what you think of it.

message 122: by Anyta (new)

Anyta Sunday | 5 comments Thanks for that, Alyssa. I guess it helps if you find it easier to write from a guy's perspective.

I like writing from male perspective's too--I have to make sure I do more research and I think it makes my writing tidier--because I'm so nervous not to 'ring true' that I have as many guys read it as possible first, lol.

Todd, yes very talented. :)Thanks for the discussion! "Ear for dialogue, and hand for writing..." *chuckles at her lame joke.

Alycia Linwood (alycia_linwood) | 5 comments Hi,

I have recently published my novel Dangerous by Alycia Linwood . Dangerous is the first book in Element Preservers series and it's young adult romance/fantasy. Here is the overview:

Ria is an 18-year-old girl who has just started going to the University of Magic, a special university for those who have one of the four elements: fire, water, air and earth. There she meets Michael, a boy whose element is different from hers, which makes their romantic involvement seem impossible because mixing of elements can have horrible consequences. She also feels threatened by Adrian, a very dangerous magic disease carrier. Magic disease, which surged as a result of bad mixing of elements, turns people into cold-hearted killers, who have a strong desire to take someone's element as they do not have their own. Ria's best friend, Paula, is fascinated by Adrian like most of the girls at the University and wants him to help her with her research about the disease. All Ria's beliefs are put to test when she starts having the symptoms of the disease and the only person she can turn to is Adrian.

I just released the first book in my YA science-fiction series, The Foxfire Chronicles, called Shadows of Past Memories.

The Foxfire Chronicles Shadows of Past Memories by Alexandra Lanc

Back cover synopsis:

"She couldn't do it. It wasn't possible. No matter what choice she made, she'd have something to face."
IT starts on a cold night, before best friends Aura and Terren are to be separated forever. During a trip to the meadow, the girls are attacked by otherworldly creatures, and an evil plot begins to unfold...
Terren: discovers she's not who she thought she was, and that she is being hunted by a monster more terrifying than her worst imaginings.
Aura: is faced with a truth she's been trying to run from, lies she's been trying to keep hidden, and an old acquaintance that keeps coming back.
Can the horrible truth be confronted, or will they be swallowed by the shadows of the past?
The first book in the Foxfire Chronicles, Shadows of Past Memories is an introduction to an entirely new world, where nothing is as it seems, and everything has a meaning."

This book has everything -- science-fiction, a little fantasy, a little romance and even some old-fashioned horror. I'm currently working on the next book in the series, slated to come out sometime next year, and I'm very excited. Please give my new book a chance, and let me know what you think!

Available in both ebook and paperback! Check out my site: http://www.alexandralanc.com

K.P. Smith | 22 comments I am working on "A New Beginning" second book in the Growing Pains Series. Growing Pains: Kendra's Diaries is for all you YA lovers like myself.

Meet Kendra Foster. She is smack in the middle of growing up. Oh boy!!

Just like anyone in the "maze" of growing up there are challenges along the way. She is facing problems at home and with her family. She thought making cheerleader would be the "best thing in the world." But she learned quickly there are two sides to every coin. As if she doesn't have enough to deal with, high school is quickly approaching and her dreams of attending The Academy seems more impossible with each passing day.

Every time she thinks she has the answers to her problems; they change the questions. But never count her out. Her story is one of determination, perseverance and strength. If you are looking ahead and/or reflecting on things passed this story is for you.

Robert Collins I mainly write SF/F, but I do have a new ebook that I think fits in with YA, "True Friends." Here's the GR link:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...

Blurb: It’s the fall of 1983. David Chalmers is a high school senior who hangs around with a group of fellow science-fiction fans, but feels few attachments to them. Alison Hughes runs with the popular crowd, but she’s as smart as she is pretty, and wonders if they’re becoming predictable.

Over the course of a few weeks events will cause David and Alison to think about what it means to be friends. Are friends just people you spend time with? What does it mean when you’re someone’s friend? Why should any of that be important?

Thanks for taking a look!

Looks like an interesting, well-though book, Robert. I like to see authors who normally write the more fictitious side of fiction write a more "realistic" novel every once in a while. Plus, you were able to incorporate what you like, and that's always a good thing. Best of luck to you!

I have two fantasy books available in print and ebook form at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks. One is a YA book, also suitable for upper middle grade readers:

THE STORM DRAGON'S HEART

Turesobei dreamed of adventure, a way to prove he was no longer a child.
Wizards should be careful what they wish for.

Destined to become his clan's next high wizard, studious Turesobei has constantly struggled to live up to other people's demands and expectations, but now he's had enough.

When his treasure-hunting father arrives with important news to discuss with the current high wizard, Turesobei spies on their secret meeting and accidentally foils an assassination attempt. As a reward his father invites him on an expedition to find an artifact known as the Storm Dragon's Heart.

But when disaster strikes, their quest becomes a race for survival.

Aided by a sassy ninja cat-girl and a mysterious diary that transforms into a winged familiar, Turesobei must face deadly cultists, vengeful spirits, and a mad wizard from a rival clan who's determined to use the artifact to destroy Turesobei's homeland.

The Storm Dragon's Heart will delight readers with a thrilling tale of exotic lands, mystical creatures, forbidden love, and fast-paced adventure.

Tina Boscha (tinaboscha) | 21 comments (This is cross-posted under Historical & Literary Fiction, btw. The book is not YA per se but appeals to readers 16 and up, and features a teenage protoganist.)

Hello all! I'm thrilled to post information about my novel, River in the Sea. The ebook version is available for 2.99 and the paperback is 12.99. The novel has been out just over a month and has received some really nice reviews, and I'd be thrilled if you would check it out.

Cover Photo

Here's the official "blurb":
At fifteen, Leen De Graaf likes everything she shouldn’t: smoking cigarettes, wearing red lipstick, driving illegally, and working in the fields. It seems the only thing she shares with her fellow Dutchmen is a fear of the German soldiers stationed nearby and a frantic wish for the war to end. When a soldier’s dog runs in front of Leen’s truck, her split decision sets off a storm of events that pitches her family against the German forces when they are most desperate – and fierce. Leen tries to hold her family together, but despite her efforts, bit by bit everything falls apart, and just when Leen experiences a horrific loss, she must make a decision that could forever brand her a traitor, yet finally allow her to live as her heart desires. Inspired by the life of the author’s mother, River in the Sea is a powerful and moving account of one girl reaching adulthood when everything she believes about family, friendship, and loyalty is questioned by war.

“Tina Boscha’s prose is exemplary; her protagonist in River in the Sea is highly sympathetic; and her setting of Friesland, Netherlands, is alive with details. I fell in love with her tender gaze at the world she creates.”
-Samrat Upadhyay, author of The Guru of Love

About the Author:
Tina Boscha lives in Oregon’s Willamette Valley with her husband and stepdaughters along with two nutty boxers and two silly black cats. She is an Oregon Literary Arts Fellowship recipient and her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. For her next novel, she is working on a good old-fashioned ghost story.

Let me know if you end up picking it up - I'd love to chat about it!

Claude Forthomme | 7 comments Hi everybody! I'm the author of the Fear of the Past Trilogy (books 1 and 2 out, the third due in November). It's about a young man, a computer whiz kid, searching for his family roots in Sicily and falling in a Time Trap where he meets all his ancestors, milling about and waiting for Judgment Day. He falls in love with the beautiful Duchess of Floridia (a real historical character) and tries to take her back to his time...

The whole trilogy is actually focused on the issue of genetic inheritance: how much do we owe our forebears? Our looks, our character? And if so, what is left for us to decide? How can we take our life in our own hands? Is there any space for freedom of choice?

Yep, high-flying questions! But never asked like that in so many words in the novels. No, the possibilities are just hinted at through action and suspense! I'm a strong believer in the writing rule "show, don't tell"!

If you're still with me down to this last sentence, thanks for reading me!

Claude Forthomme | 7 comments Hi everyone! I'm Claude Nougat, the author of Fear of the Past trilogy - about a young man, a computer whiz kid, who searches for his family roots in Sicily and falls in a Time Trap where his ancestors are milling about, waiting for Judgment Day. He falls in love with the beautiful Duchess of Floridia (a real historical character - she married the King of Naples in 1814). Can he take her back to his own time?

The trilogy actually addresses the issue of genetic inheritance: how much do we owe our forebears? Our looks, our character? And if so, to what extent are we free in making our choices? Is heredity destiny?

Yep, BIG questions! But the novels do not address them in so many words. The issue is only hinted at and shown through action (and suspense!). I'm a great believer in the writing rule "show, don't tell"!

Susan Quinn (susan_kaye_quinn) | 43 comments Hello all, my name is Susan Kaye Quinn, and I've been a fan of science fiction since I first read Heinlein’s Foundation series as a kid. I was always a math/science geek, but science fiction made me a literary lover too. I grew up to be a serious engineer (worked for NASA, got a Ph.D.), but I was drawn back to stories, and now I write them for children and teens. I have one teen love story on Kindle UK (Life, Liberty, and Pursuit) and my new paranormal/science fiction novel Open Minds is coming out November 1st!

Open Minds (Book One of the Mindjack Trilogy) by Susan Kaye Quinn OPEN MINDS: When everyone reads minds, a secret is a dangerous thing to keep.

Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can’t read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can’t be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves. When she accidentally controls Raf’s mind and nearly kills him, Kira tries to hide her frightening new ability from her family and an increasingly suspicious Raf. But lies tangle around her, and she’s dragged deep into a hidden world of mindjackers, where having to mind control everyone she loves is just the beginning of the deadly choices before her.
