Brandon West | 7 comments Scarlet and the Keepers of the Light by Brandon West

I'm new to the group and although Keepers was written to be enjoyable to adults as well, this seems like the best place. I hope you all enjoy.

Synopsis:
Perhaps it’s the fact that her puppy has grown to be twice the size of a German Shepherd and has started talking. Perhaps it’s that mysterious evil figures are searching everywhere for her and her family, intent on ending her life. Or perhaps it’s the fact that Scarlet Hopewell has just learned that she is one half a prophecy that will decide the fate of two worlds, one that she didn’t even know existed. Whatever the reason, Scarlet Hopewell is having a very interesting year.

The barrier that separates the magical and non-magical worlds is about to be broken and Scarlet is caught right in the middle. With an ancient wolf who she thought was her family dog, a wizened old Tounder (the elder of the Keepers of the Light), and her family, Scarlet will embark on a great adventure to learn how to wield magical power beyond her wildest imagination. But time is running out. An evil is rising in the south and he too will amass powers equal or greater to her own…and he has a head start. Before the end, her world will be destroyed, and the only hope for those that remain is Scarlet.

Scarlet and the Keepers of the Light is the first in a series of five novels for young adults that will chronicle the adventures of Scarlet and her companions as they fight against the evil Prince Thanerbos and his plans to rule over both the magical and non-magical worlds. The novel is about finding one’s own inner strength and the inseparable bond that can exist between family and friends. Filled with imagery of worlds both familiar and fantastical, it takes the readers through Scarlet’s transition from an ordinary twelve-year-old girl with hopes of one day being a writer, to the powerful prophesied hero of a land beyond even her considerable imagination.

Rebecca Burke | 34 comments Lori and Susan, the word counts in my YA books are much lower, probably because the stories are either dramas about social issues, or comic fiction (the latest, which isn't even 50,000 words). I think the big fantasy, sci fi, historical kinds of YA fiction would be more in the range Susan cites.

Ask yourself what is more successful at the movies, a 90-minute comedy that is well-paced and mostly funny, or a 120-minute comedy that drags and has more filler and boring patches than laughs...it's the same with comic fiction.

The Ahimsa Club (about a group of young people forming an animal rights club at school and facing harsh (and sometimes comical) push-back from their fellow students and community)

When I Am Singing to You (a young Mexican girl is kicked out of home and learns how to live on her own in an urban YWCA, filled with other troubled teens)

What If the Hokey Pokey Really Is What It’s All About? (a mother-daughter road trip from hell, in the vein of the Adrian Mole diaries)

Susan Quinn (susan_kaye_quinn) | 43 comments Rebecca - I think you're right that YA book length can vary a lot, with comedy on the shorter end. My small press published YA contemporary romance is 100k; my self-published YA paranormal/SF is 89k (which also had many requests from agents and no complaints about length). I also write MG, which is generally shorter, and have had requests from agents on those even in the 50-60k range.

I think it's more important that there are no wasted words, that the story and pacing are tight, and not so much worrying about the word count.

Jacques Antoine (jacquesantoine) | 21 comments I'm hoping to be able to finish the second book in the series "The Emily Kane Stories" over Christmas. That sounds like wishful thinking, I know. But I'm determined!

It's an action thriller about a high school girl who has to fight to stay one step ahead of the covert operatives hunting her. The title is SEN NO SEN, which is a karate term meaning "attack the attack."

You can read the working version of chs 1-3 here: http://ronin1999.blogspot.com/2011/11/sn...

You can also find chs 1-6 of the first book, Go No Sen, here: http://ronin1999.blogspot.com/2011/07/go...

If you like either of them, let me know. I may do a give away of the first book over Christmas if there's enough interest.

Rebecca Mize | 2 comments Hello!
Majestica; First Glimpse is the story of love, courage, determination, and hope. Through all the joy, torment, and wonder, watch as the love between Lacey and Jace is challenged and threatened time and time again, and yet somehow continues to thrive.

There’s a small clearing up in the mountains, in the cold, dark woods of Alaska, where a warm, bright light shines. Anyone that comes upon this light is pulled into it, by its exquisite beauty and wonder. Once you pass through this light, you are taken into another world, the world of Majestica. Lacey Grayson had no idea other worlds like this existed until she met Jace, and her world was changed forever.

Lacey was the typical teenage girl. Her life revolved around school, friends, and boys. She was in love with the concept of love. All she wanted was to find her prince charming, her knight in shining armor, the one boy that would love her unconditionally. No one ever knows exactly how and when they’ll find their true love, and for Lacey, well, she found her true love in the most unusual of places, in a situation she never expected to find herself in, and fell in love with him right then and there. And he was perfect. Jace was the definition of perfect; from his gorgeous looks to his endearing demeanor. He was the man she had been longing for.

She was ready to live a happy, fairytale life with him by her side. However, it didn’t quite work out that easily. Lacey finds herself dealing with the sneers from her classmates about dating the “dangerous” guy that lives up on the mountain, and dealing with threats from the boy at school that had tried to attack her. Fate had brought Lacey and Jace together. Jace had saved her life, and had protected her time and time again. He was the one true love she had been waiting for. When Jace reveals that he has to leave her to go to Majestica to avenge his father’s death, Lacey must try and find a way to stop him before he, himself, is killed. He saved her before, now will she be able to save him? How far would you go to save the person you love?

This is the first book in the Majestica trilogy. Majestica; First Glimpse is a passionate and suspenseful love story, with an interesting fantasy twist, not just for the young adult crowd, but for romance fans of every age.

Majestica; First Glimpse

Burnt Children by R.E. Washington
In Meli, if you're born with the wrong magic the Purifiers rip it out. They'll etch a black flame into your skin, labeling you a Burnt Child. Elaria is one of those Burnt Children.

This rare ability draws Elaria to a strange locket that holds a dangerous mystery surrounding the leader of the Purifiers and a conspiracy that could change all of Meli. Soon, Elaria is hunted by Purifiers, befriended by a murderer, and haunted by the ghost of the very woman who doomed the Burnt Children fifty years ago.

All Elaria wants is to find a place to belong. But with a strange power growing inside of her, Elaria realizes she must choose between saving herself or saving the world.

D.H. Nevins (dhnevins) | 5 comments My recently released book, Wormwood, is appropriate for mature teens, young adults and adults. Due to mature themes and violence, I wouldn't recommend this book for younger teens.

The story follows the path of a tormented half-angel as he dutifully fulfills his destiny to destroy the earth and wipe out any human survivors. It includes a legion of Nephilim, a demon and a kick a** female lead character.

Wormwood is available in both print and ebook formats from Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords and CreateSpace.

I would be happy to provide a coupon code for a free Smashwords download to anyone that requests it. Just message me (click on my name to get to my Goodreads homepage) and let me know.

I released it in September, but because I'm now traveling until late May, Wormwood has fallen into a kind of promotional limbo (due to lack of time and internet access). Anyone that would like to read it in the meantime is so very welcome. If I don't get back to you with the code right away, just hold tight and I'll get it to you the moment I have internet access again. Thanks!

Cheree Alsop I recently published my first four books and they are all young adult:

Galdoni by Cheree Alsop “This is the Arena, and here we live to die.” These are the words carved into a holding cell where genetically-altered gladiators, the winged humans called Galdoni, are trained to fight for the nation’s most popular television show. Kale, rescued by three high school students and nursed back from the brink of death, is given the chance to experience life as a human. When he is captured, he has to use what he learned in the world outside the Academy in order to free the other Galdoni and return to the human girl he loves.

Shadows (The Shadow Series) by Cheree Alsop Shadows takes place in a world where two different races gain strength from either the day or the night. Duskies, born as the unwanted offspring from mixing the races, are raised as slaves and protectors from the monstrous Sathen. One girl, a Duskie named Nexa, is given a chance to change the fate of her people when she saves the life of a prince and in return wins his heart. Shadows will be a series. I have the next six books outlined.

Silver (The Silver Series) by Cheree Alsop Silver, book one of the Silver Series, is a coming of age story about a teenage werewolf whose father is murdered. He has to come to terms with his new life, new school, and new friends while trying to prevent more killings. Attempting to make peace with the territory’s pack and falling in love with a werewolf hunter’s daughter make his new situation even more perilous.

Black (The Silver Series) by Cheree Alsop Black, book two of the Silver Series, is about a werewolf raised through the atrocities of a werewolf fighting ring. He is rescued and given the chance at a new life, but haunting reminders of his past follow him as he tries to make a fresh start. He has to confront his dark history in order to protect the girl he loves, or let himself be swept away into the pain and humiliation of the arena once more.

Karina Kantas short Excerpt for IN TIMES OF VIOLENCE: YA urban thriller. Just released on Kindle.

I also found out that afternoon, that they were all genuine bikers who would spend most of the summer riding around on their Harleys, Hondas etc, going to conventions and meetings. It sounded real cool. Marcus owned a V Rod Harley, his pride joy, which he only took out in the summer. Dylan had a Yamaha Raider; only he didn’t look after his bike like Marcus did, or so I was told.

As I lay back relaxing in Marcus’s arms, I visualized myself on the back of his bike riding hard and fast with the wind blowing in my hair. I felt fortunate to find a band of brothers like the Tyrants, and I believed I belonged there, experiencing a weird recognition as if I had been in that situation before, only it wasn’t like déjá vu. I felt as though I was supposed to be there, at that time and place with them. It felt warm, comfortable and natural.

Mick told me that Marcus had threatened to kill Monica if he ever saw her again.

The other side of Marcus worried me as I had yet to see the tough, mean side of the Tyrants. To me, the gang seemed nice and gentle, only it wasn’t a front. That’s what they were really like; they were good people behind closed doors. They had normal lives; they went to work, paid rent just like any regular person. Only when they were outside, when they were in public, they became the Tyrants and lived up to their name. I could see why they did what they did. When they were Tyrants they were respected, and I could only imagine how good that felt. I guess that’s what I really wanted. To belong to such a large group, everyone watching you, yet keeping out of the way. You were kings. You owned the streets.

It was about nine when everyone started to leave.

“So, Jade. You fancy coming out with us tomorrow night, if you’re feeling up to it that is?” Mick asked me.

“Yeah, thanks, I’d love to. I could do with some fresh air.”

“Can I have a quick word, Marcus?” Tony asked quietly.

Everybody left the room, and I was alone to gather my thoughts. I wanted to pinch myself, was I dreaming? Could I be so lucky? I couldn’t believe the situation I was in, regardless of how I got there. I smiled to myself. Was it finally my turn for happiness?

Ten minutes later Marcus came back into the room, I could sense he was upset. He sat down, and gazed at me seriously.

“Is everything okay?” I asked.

“No, everything’s not okay, Jade... Monica’s been shouting her mouth off to the Vipers, she’s looking for you, and so are the Vipers.” He stopped then to see my reaction. “Do you understand what I’m saying? You’re a target, they’re out to get you.”

I shrugged. “I don’t see why, I’ve done nothing to them.”

“I didn’t tell you this, but Monica used to live here with me and now she’s pissed at you for taking her place and she’s out for blood. She’s tough, but it’s not her you’ve got to worry about.”

I was stunned. It then occurred to me why the house was so tidy, only there were no signs of any female ever residing here. Marcus must have trashed all her things while I was unconscious. He tried to wipe all traces of her away, but for whose benefit, his own or mine?

He continued. “You left a couple of bruises on her and she told the Vipers you beat her up.”

“I beat her up,” I cried in dismay. “What about me? Why should the Vipers care anyway?”

“You don’t understand do you? She’s gone over to the other side. They know all about me now, where I live, and work, everything. She’s sold us out and in return they do her a favour.”

I was beginning to get the gist of the situation.

“Oh, I understand, she tells them everything she knows about you, how to get to you, and in return they slit my throat, sounds fair.”

I tried to sound sarcastic, but I was scared. Why was this happening to me when everything was going so well? Was I going to have to pay the ultimate price?

Exceptional

"In the future, things are anything but ordinary..."

In 2022, the United States commissioned a group of scientists to experiment with genetic mutations. Their goal was to create a serum that would alter the human genetic code, making the subject stronger and faster. They succeeded but their victory was short lived. Not only had they created a super serum, but also an airborne virus. By 2025, seventy-five percent of the world's population had perished. The survivors, well their lives would never be the same.

175 A.V.

Ally is an Ordinary; a human immune to the virus. She lives in a settlement outside the City with her mother and twin brother, but lately it doesn't seem to be enough. She is wrestling between being with her family and volunteering to move to the City, where she can work for the Exceptionals.

Luke is an Exceptional; a superior human being. His ancestors were infected with the virus and lived through it, leaving their super human strength and special abilities to him. He has never given much thought to Ordinarys, despite pressure from his father to choose one from the ORC. But all of that changes when he meets Ally...

Urchin King by Katharina Gerlach
For fourteen years, street-urchin Paul's miserable existence has kept him safe from an ancient law that sentences all second-born twins to death. When he learns he is the younger twin of the mentally handicapped Crown Prince who's in danger of being killed for his disability, he agrees to play the role of the miraculously healed royal heir. Paul struggles to learn how to act like a born ruler, but finds that his greatest skill, getting by unnoticed, is now his greatest liability. He knows if he is discovered, he will be executed like all second-born twins.

Darwin has worked for these jerks her whole life, singing about crosswalk safety and body odor, living with the WI's strict code of morality (no art for art's sake, no flashy clothes, and no massive rainbow-colored sock collections like the one hidden in Darwin's closet).

When she finds out the WI may have had a hand in her father's death, Darwin starts asking questions. She explores the Private Library's dusty basement archives. She discovers rock and roll. She meets Brax, a handsome (if you like the rebellious type) double agent whose recurring disappearances give no clue whether his loyalty lies with the state or the resistance. Brax gives Darwin a media drive filled with illegal music. No bigger than a stick of gum, it's the most dangerous thing Darwin's ever touched. And once she presses play, she refuses to stop listening.

In Darwin, Singer, author Nadria Tucker tells the story of Darwin, who moves through the underground, a network of basements, artists, and rebels prepared to fight‑violently if necessary‑for the freedom to sing, dance, write, juggle, or do whatever else lies in their hearts.

Danielle Bourdon (daniellebourdon) | 17 comments Welcome to The Fates,

Up until three days before her eighteenth birthday, Farris Landry's life fit neatly into three categories: consuming, troublesome and downright tricky.
Consuming because of the unnatural passion (obsession) she had for writing 'stories'.
Troublesome for the mother who descended into the realm of the insane right before her eyes.
Tricky when she found herself on her own, forced to carve out an existence by the skin of her teeth.
Farris quickly discovers that consuming-troubling-tricky is nothing compared to the Chaos that ensues after a visit to her grandmother. Determined to go on with her life, Farris finds out the hard way that sometimes, Fate has other ideas. In the blink of an eye, her life gets turned upside down: a tornado rips through town, her loft catches fire, and an explosion decimates her workplace.
A stranger, Emerson Ferrera, inserts himself into the violence, becoming guardian and protector. Farris begins to suspect her grandmother's warning of impending death might more serious than she thought.
Tragedy and betrayal follow, throwing Farris into a tailspin. Will she be able to trust the stranger she's become close to, or will his deception tear them apart?

Liz Davis (Liz_Davis) | 21 comments Thanks so very much for the opportunity. My YA fantasy novel was published in January:http://amzn.to/HX1rXW

TANGI'S TEARDROPS

When Tangi's father dies, he leaves her nothing but three empty bottles. A kind uncle takes the poverty-stricken girl and her stepsisters in, and for a time life gets better on his farm. But Tangi remains a lonely outsider; her stepsisters tease her for her crippled leg, and the housekeepers use her like a servant.

Just before her thirteenth birthday, Tangi learns the truth about her father's strange legacy: the three bottles aren't empty any more. They're filled with all the tears she's cried since her father died, and her tears are enchanted. She must use them to travel to Rosevine, the world of her dead mother. Tangi not only belongs there but is necessary to keep Rosevine alive.

Tangi's tears will save Rosevine, and Rosevine will save Tangi from a cruelty-filled life, except for one thing: Tangi's lost the bottles.

Debbie | 102 comments Hi Liz, fancy meeting you here ;o)

HI,
my YA novel (sci-fi) Amethyst Eyes has been out for 6 months now, please take a look.

http://www.amazon.com/Amethyst-Eyes-e...

"The biggest thing on 15-year-old Tommy’s mind is convincing Mom to let him go to the drive-in, but when an accident claims his mother’s life and puts him in the hospital, the arrival of his estranged, alien father brings more changes than he had bargained for.
It doesn’t take his father long to figure out that Tommy knows nothing about who or what he is. Without any explanation, Tommy finds himself onboard his father’s spaceship where he is forced to trust a man he does not know in a world he knows even less about.
Adapting to his new life seems overwhelming, and his father’s solution may prove to be Tommy’s finest challenge yet…Jayden. A few months younger than Tommy, high strung and always in a mood, the doctor’s daughter definitely didn’t like being ‘told’ to help Tommy fit in. Jayden is not the most welcoming or patient of tutors, let alone a friend.
As fate would have it, Tommy quickly learns that none of these things compare to the peril that comes from being born with amethyst eyes."

Andy | 12 comments Battle Boys is an action adventure novel, brimming with magic, monsters and mayhem.

Sandringham Tate was hoping for a relaxing summer holiday, reading books and generally not doing very much.

Instead, he will have to fight monsters, rescue his parents from another dimension and protect the world from three evil sorcerers hell-bent on enslaving humanity.

A tall order for a thirteen year old boy who doesn't even like doing PE!

Aliaa El-Nashar Against All Odds is a novel about a boy called Damien. Damien is a typical teenage boy, born to a rich family with 3 brothers and a sister. The family relations are quite abysmal. With that said, he’s arrogant, obnoxious and an ultimate player. He dates more girls than he even cares to remember a name of any of them. All of a sudden, however, he is sick of dating. But his closest friends, not quite used to such a behavior from him decide to set him up on a blind date with a girl that is completely his type. Damien is grudgingly dragged to the beach to meet his date, when he bumps into another girl. This girl is as far as can be from his type, and yet he holds a torch to her, and finds himself drawn. The girl, Alexis, on the other hand doesn’t care for his type. So Damien, without being able to help himself finds himself wanting to change to see if she would change her opinion about him. Much to his horror, he finds himself resorting to his best friends, siblings - and even worse- his parents, for help, which causes him to be their source of entertainment for the duration.
