Theresa | 15499 comments Wow! I just squeaked in! Good thing it has been a pretty quiet, emergency free work day so far!

Now off to see where SE of Stockholm can take me given the books already lined up for me to read. I'm thinking a short hop likely.

Booknblues | 12045 comments May's Prompt for a Free Ticket

I took a look at May and found so much happening! May Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, Memorial Day!

Even May in history has much to offer: U2 shot down, Machiavelli's birthday, Columbus "discovered" Jamaica, Karl Marx's birthday and that is just up to May 5.

As far as Month's go it is AAPI Heritage, Jewish Heritage,Mental Health Awareness.

And Days- World Turtle Day, Geek Pride Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Parrot Day.

As you can see it is wide open, so I am leaving it wide open. From what you can find out about May choose one book by cover, title, tag or author which represents something in May, but just be sure that you let me know what it is.

Maybe we will all learn something about May.

message 322: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12907 comments Well, that is both broad and fun!!! Lots of free tickets ahead! I haven’t even used one yet. So my prompt for the play harder challenge is to have a book with the month in the title in the month that I read it. I’ve got two books with May in the title. Since we are being so broad about things to do with me, would that count?

What is more May than May?

message 324: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15499 comments But it still has to be a book that you read for The Compass spin, right?

I've only managed one mini read but that's fine as I really don't need to stock up on passes. In fact the one I just earned replaced the one I just used so I am still at 3. I am only managing an average of 2 reads for The Compass a month and that likely will slow.

Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4758 comments Grrrrrrrr....this is my 8th SW. Since I'm currently in Arizona, my crime choices are limited. I'm going to use a free ticket. I'm not sure where I'm going yet, but it probably should be located in a city that gives me some choices for my next SW direction.

message 338: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12907 comments And all I ever get is east or north with one south east. I have traveled the globe that way. Never once used a free ticket. Only this time I wanted either east or west. I’ve got the perfect book waiting.

Since I am also doing crime fiction in this challenge, I've saved some research links to some websites with recommendations for some tricky locations. They start here in my personal tracking. Starts with Iceland latest was Falklands and Tierra del Fuego I think. I am currently in Sri Lanka.

Please feel free to check out the links since you have the same theme.

message 340: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12907 comments Amy is using her first free ticket! And yet she will get a free ticket to replace it. Amy is traveling (SW) from New York City to Hollywood.

Plans to read In Good Company; Tales of Laughter and MAYhem. Carol Burnett, someone who I love and continue to re-watch every single night is a Strong Woman who made her way in Comedy before women comedians were really a thing. Madeline Kahn, Lucille Ball, Lily Tomlin, Nanette Fabray, she was in that class and they were all regulars on her show.

Play Harder needs a Prompt for May, as does the Compass May Challenge. I think this has got to be the one! She's up next.

Amy | 12907 comments Can anyone connect anything Paris or French Queen to May? That would have been my east prompt book. The Queen's Fortune by Alison Pataki. But I was really hoping for was the Secret Midwife. (Mothers and Strong Women and a PH prompt), but turns out Poland is Northeast.

There are three French Holidays in May:
https://www.parisdiscoveryguide.com/p...

Also<" The French Queen in May refers to several instances. Marie Antoinette, as Queen consort of France, was officially crowned on May 10, 1774. Additionally, Mary Tudor, as Queen consort of France, was married to King Louis XII in May 1520

And
On 18 May, 1804, after much political horse trading, the French Senate proclaimed Bonaparte Emperor Napoleon I
And
Napoleon Bonaparte died on May 5, 1821, at Longwood, on the island of St. Helena. He was exiled there by the British after his defeat at Waterloo. The cause of his death was stomach cancer

Yes, I think there is enough there to earn you a free ticket.

Amy - I just used one of mine -- I was just too far south to find easily another crime fiction read, but I also immediately replaced it with my NE detour to Sweden, LOL.

On France, there are a wealth of books both F and NF covering what BnB provided relating to important dates and celebrations in May in France.

One of my favorite, discovered when I was a student in Paris, was May 1 - their Labor Day. It's a holiday, and everything back then was closed, except the boulangerie was open for a couple hours to sell baguettes to the locals. On every street corner, there were vendors with buckets of muguets - lilies of the valley - in little bouquets which you purchased in honor of the day.

Here's a link about those muguets and why they are still prevalent today on 1er Maie.

message 350: by Robin P (last edited Apr 30, 2025 08:29PM) (new)

Robin P | 5728 comments May 1 was traditionally a day for men to give the "muguets" to women - sort of like Valentine's Day and Mother's Day combined. That may have changed in modern times.

My favorite French singer, Charles Aznavour, has a song from the 1950's about all the ways a character is a terrible husband. He leaves cigarette ashes around, he doesn't call when he's coming home late, and on May 1st, he doesn't remember even a the smallest hint of muguet. (This being the '50's, he concludes that she is an angel and loves him enough to forgive everything.)
