Jen K | 3143 comments I've never been to Buffalo but the wind chill off of the St Lawrence is brutal. The weather in Manila right now is pretty perfect, about 80 degrees but I'm so sad to miss the snow in DC.

Will be reviewing my book today for a spin.

The fresh snow is pretty, but a pretty perfect 80 degrees would be really nice right now.

Booknblues | 12045 comments From the directions some people are going to need to be quite creative.
If your direction does not work, you may either use the free pass or wait a week and require another spin, just note that this is the reason for your request.

There's southern Florida yet or Puerto Rico or US Virgin Islands.

Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4758 comments It's helpful to look at an actual globe in some cases. I thought I was in deep trouble but I looked at our globe and then did the calculation in Travel Math which concurred that my destination was Southwest. If I just looked at my flat map, it didn't appear that way at all.

LOL! You are leaving from Texas, aren't you!?

message 62: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 3507 comments Not sure if I’m leaving Texas. I could go to Corpus Christie or over to Miami but unfortunately my library has had a huge outage for 6 days now affecting the catalog and all of its’ e resources so I can’t search for anything. 😕

Amy | 12907 comments I looked at a map and it was obviously France. While I have 1000 books, I could read from France, there’s one that happens to have a burn on the cover and I need that for play harder….. guess what I’m reading….

Thanks! I think my best choice is Antarctica.

message 71: by Saorsa (new)

Saorsa Lykins | 98 comments Not sure if any of you guys are way north or way south, but one thing that makes keeping your orientation (N, NE, S, SW, etc.) straight in your head is to use a map with longitude and latitude lines clearly drawn on it. Near the poles this is especially useful because truing your path in relation to those lines will keep you going in your direction, even if it feels like you are veering in another direction. For instance, my home is between two longitude lines and two latitudinal lines. Mine was a bit tricky because I got NE. On my map it we traced a line going true north, remaining equidistant along my longitudinal lines. Then we traced a line going true east, remaining equidistant along my latitudinal lines. The crazy pilots looking at my map were eyeballing dropping points on those lines and then creating intersecting right angle lines whose point of intersection maybe (please, God) landed somewhere near something someone wrote a book about. They kept throwing coordinates into their fancy pilot wizardry app, trying to find something bookish. I got impatient and went low brow. I took a compass and found the midpoint between the lines and drew a third straight up the middle for NE. I was pretty lucky that I had tools available. Our table at the cabin seats ten, and my son has topo maps that roll out to that big once we laid Alaska, Yukon, and Northwest Territories out. It really helped me to have a flat, printed version with longitude and longitude lines that looks almost like a globe was laid flat. I’m at our Eagle River house today, and I pulled out our biggest atlas that we used for homeschool because Carter’s topo maps are only going to get me so far. Maybe it’s just me, but trying to trace the initial direction lines on the computer was just difficult (maybe I’m old like that). I do like putting in my coordinates, once I find a place, into the pilot’s app to tell me if my orienting was correct. Just to clarify, I’m trying to really force myself to land on a place that matches my direction as exactly as possible and read a book from that exact place.

message 75: by NancyJ (last edited Jan 15, 2025 12:15AM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11060 comments I’m ready for my 1/15/25 spin please. I’m departing from Antarctica, and I’m hoping to turn north. I’m on the northern coast, so it might be possible to find something else on the continent that works for other directions, but that’s a stretch.

I'm happy with this direction. It looks like most of us avoided getting boxed in. I'll be curious to see what Joy does though. If anyone can find another far north book. It's her. Jack London has a short story collection that might work.

message 84: by Joy D (new)

I read Adam Shoalts Where the Falcon Flies: A 3,400 Kilometre Odyssey From My Doorstep to the Arctic recently and noticed he wrote a book in which he starts out in Eagle Plains in the Yukon, Beyond the Trees: A Journey Alone Across Canada's Arctic, which may work for you. I want to read it eventually.

message 86: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15499 comments Definitely happy to leave Reykjavik, Iceland to head SE - I'll be spoiled for choice.

But I was prepared with a book if I got North -- still would have been in Iceland but Ragnor Jonasson sets his series on the north coast, which is north of the capital. I figured if I was prepared, I wouldn't get north. 😄 It worked.
