Monthly Challenge: August 2024

Welcome to our monthly Listopia Madness challenge. It is a relatively simple challenge. Every month you will get 3 listopia lists from me and 3 from the winners of the previous month. *Please note that if you do not respond in a reasonable amount of time that the 4th place person (and so on) will replace you until we get 3 lists.

How it works
📘You will read as many books as you want from as many of the lists provided as you want.
📘You will score each book using the point system provided below
📘You will keep a running tally of your total in your post (try to keep your books in one comment, if possible for easy tracking)
📘I will contact the 3 highest-scoring readers at the end of the month and they will each choose one listopia list to be included in the next month's challenge.

Challenge rules:
📘No poetry or cookbooks allowed.
📘Standard Rules Apply

Book Points

And The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - very split personality.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Now as far as I can tell, the first list is mostly sports romances (really not my cup of tea), but if anyone comes across any really good sports themed books that aren't romances (on that list or elsewhere. Please do holler. There can be romance in the book, just not the main focus with sports only as an afterthought/backdrop.

I loved The Art of Fielding, and I really enjoyed the Beartown trilogy too. I'm looking more for books like those, if anyone has any recs! Open to any and all sports, but generally prefer the more physical kind to say, snooker 😉

message 20: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2149 comments Sports fiction? Not my genre, but, a book that I found wonderful was The Boys of Winter The Untold Story of a Coach, a Dream, and the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team by Wayne Coffey .
Of course, it could be because I remember that game like it was yesterday, and I lived about three blocks from one of the players growing up, but still. It isn't on that list or anything.

Easy to follow. But just in case you are unsure, watch the movie Miracle with Snake Pliskin I mean Kurt Russell in it, and you will likely want to know more.

bamaace83 | 1436 comments I love my hockey romance books but I also understand just wanting a good sports book. I really like Mariana Zupata's books. There will be a some romance in them but From Lukov with Love has a good storyline before romance jumps in. Save it for one of those challenges that needs you to read a sports book but I would recommend the audio version. She has a couple others that are more sport heavy than hot smoking hockey guys like I read most of the time.

I read Kulti, but unfortunately the author's ignorance on the sport in question was blatant, which spoiled it for me. If it was something she knew more about, I would probably have enjoyed it more.

I sent Donna my pick before coming over here to see what you and Sammy had picked, Jenny. We're going to have LOTS of overlap this month.

Too funny..."

Extra points for the books found on both lists then!

Truitt_T | 1371 comments We may have books on three and four lists this month. :)

Truitt_T | 1371 comments Donna - Since Fairytale Retellings is over, May we have I Like Big Books as a bonus in its place?

I thought I removed that... Yes, I will replace it with that challenge.

Jenny | 2149 comments There was a glaring void on the LGBTQ Sci-fi list. One of my favorite books wasn't on it, so I added it. I won't be reading it this round, but I highly encourage you guys to read it. I absolutely fell in love with this book.
The Sol Majestic by Ferrett Steinmetz

Also, some books from different lists that are oh so good, and not as well known (I think) are-
Regeneration (Regeneration, #1) by Pat Barker (movie list 9313) Historical fiction
Calculating God by Robert J. Sawyer (movie 8033, Best 2296)
Gun, With Occasional Music by Jonathan Lethem (1266 best) Screw with your brain fun.
Qualityland (QualityLand, #1) by Marc-Uwe Kling (6178 best) Ditto
Islandia by Austin Tappan Wright (6896 best) Long political-ish fantasy.
And two from my favorite author ever-
Sleeping in Flame (Answered Prayers, #2) by Jonathan Carroll (3240 best) and Bones of the Moon (Answered Prayers, #1) by Jonathan Carroll (1601 LGBT)

I know we don't often do recommendations on this thread, but I couldn't resist.

Why shouldn't we do recommendations on this thread?

And I am so happy to find someone else who enjoyed The Sol Majestic! If yo ever want to do a buddy reread, I'm in.

I've been meaning to read several of the other books you mentioned. I'll get around to them someday....

Jenny | 2149 comments Have you read anything else by Steinmetz? I want more of The Sol Majestic world, but I haven't tried anything else of his to see if they are as good.

Jenny | 2149 comments I am totally in for a buddy reread at some point. Bonus points if we can visit that galactic restaurant as well.

I haven't. I really should, though.

Jenny | 2149 comments Ooh. another great one from your list is
The Light Brigade
Have you read that one?

Yes!!! Kameron Hurley is a fascinating athor and I thought The Light Brigade was excellent. I have a bunch of Hurley's books on my tbr.

I read a short review of The Light Brigade in which the reviewer mentioned the MC's gender, after Hurley went the majority of the book avoiding any mention of it. I was so peeved, I emailed the reviewer. I may have been a bit harsh, lol.

message 43: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2149 comments I thought of them as a her if I remember, but I don't remember why. Like I think of Murderbot as a male, with no clues sending me that way. My brain does what it does.
I think it is a generational thing. I grew up with the example of most jobs being held by men, so that is the default in my imagination.
Although with Hurley's book, I had read The Stars Are Legion first, which is pretty female-centric, so I must have gone in that direction with the Light Brigade.

Another book that does the no hints to gender really well is Scalzi's Lock In

I went the same way you did with gender for both. And I love both Lock In and Head On and agree that Scalzi tread a very careful line. I'll admit, though, that I have the Wil Wheaton versions on audio, which encourage me to lean male.

message 45: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2149 comments I listened to both Wheaton's and Amber Benson's, and they both worked. But, I listened to Wil's first, so I did the same thing.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments I'm not finding many of my TBR books on any of the lists (but there are a few on my own at least!). Lots and lots and lots of already read ones though 😆

Most disappointed I can't find Termination Shock on any of them. My one planned re-read, and it's not among the thousands I have read already 😆

And The Tattooist of Auschwitz!!

I love the disclaimer at the top of the best sci-fi (my) list! Basically it reads "this got too bloated with ridiculousness, and there is a new list with only sci-fi on it if you click here."
I thought the extra ridiculousness would be better for this group though. teehee

message 49: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Yeah, I normally like mixed-genre lists, because I can't read just one genre all month. I'd be bored senseless, lol.

Truitt_T | 1371 comments Jenny - Was this the first time you read Cyteen? I've been considering a reread.

ETA: Good glory - I just looked at the audio version and I don't remember the books being that long.....
