C.J. Tudor's new novel

Off the Air

Witchcraft: A History in Thirteen Trials by Marion GibsonGibson writes extensively about witches and witch-craft and in this book discusses 13 witch trials that have spanned the ages, putting them in the context of their time and place.

The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger | audiobook read by CJ Wilson | My ReviewIn 1958, small town Jewel, Minnesota is rocked by the murder of its most prominent citizen and largest land owner. Richly written crime drama turns to a multi-jurisdiction action thriller.
Finished Spandau Phoenix. I believe Greg Iles's first novel written in 1993. A complex thriller, 4 stars.

Fatal First Edition by Jenn McKinlay https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer
by Kai Bird and Martin SherwinI like the first half or so of the book, about Oppenheimer's early years and through his time at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. This was interesting and enlightening about the scientist's family, education, social life, interest in left wing causes, brilliance in physics, being the director of Los Alamos, and so on. (As a side note, one thing that particularly struck me about the story was that - right out in the open - schools, universities. government organizations, etc. restricted the number of Jews allowed in. They'd come right out and say 'we have too many Jews' or something similar.)
The second part of the story about Lewis Strasse and his minions doing their best to destroy Oppenheimer is good from a factual and historical POV, but it made me depressed. I felt the venality of these people and the non-stop surveillance, bugging of phones, following people, harassing people, and more was off the charts. And much of it, done by the FBI, was illegal.
In any case the book is well researched and well-written. I'm not going to write a more extensive review, but I give it 5 stars.
That's all I have to say about this book....except that the movie 'Oppenheimer' (2023) seems to skew the story a little bit. Films usually do that though.

I've just finished reading Clouds of Witness by Dorothy Sayers. That was fun. Not great, just lots of fun. I will likely move on to book #3, Unnatural Death sometime soon.
Paw and Order
by Spencer QuinnIn this addition to the humorous Chet and Bernie series, the detective team investigates a murder in scandal-ridden Washington DC.
Formulaic but fun as usual. 3 stars

Aussie/UK mystery writer Rachel Amphlett has a couple of stories on her website you might enjoy Devil of a Favor is a very short story with a worrying premise and a twist.
My review of Devil of a Favor
The second story by Rachel Amphlett is A Burning Question, a longer mystery featuring Detective Kay Hunter from her well-known series, although this is a standalone. Narrowboats have become a target for arson.
My review of A Burning Question
Up next for me was the light and fun
A Scaly Tail of Murder by Jacqueline Vick https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Fans of Martin Walker’s the Bruno series would do well to steer clear of The Caves of Perigord
the author’s first work. My two star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I read All The Talk Is Dead by Michael Ebner I won it in a Goodreads giveaway. I do not recommend it. My 2.5 star review, rounded down https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I recently read T.J. Klune's quirky sci-fi adventure, In the Lives of Puppets. Known for his popular The House in the Cerulean Sea,(which I loved), here he has taken twists from "Pinocchio", "Alice in Wonderland", and "The Wizard of Oz". He even created an irrestisbly hilarious Nurse Ratched robot from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
My review of In the Lives of Puppets
The Private Life of Spies and The Exquisite Art of Getting Even: Stories of Espionage and Revenge by Alexander McCall SmithIn this humorous two-part book, 'The Private Life of Spies' contains tales about espionage, and 'The Exquisite Art of Getting Even' contains anecdotes about revenge.
I always enjoy Smith's books. 3.5 stars
