If you are an animal lover, you would not like the graphic description of the bears being butchered.
Wilderness crime fans might like this book. Animal lovers would not.

Now starting ALL THE SINNERS BLEED by S.A. Cosby, his latest stand alone mystery/thriller novel published in 2023.

The book won the Anthony, Macavity, and ITW Awards as the Best Mystery Novel of the Year and is a finalist for the Edgar, Steel Dagger, and Barry Awards in the same category with the winners still to be announced.

I read Cosby's two earlier novels last year and really liked them, although readers should know upfront that the subject matter is not for the squeamish.

The Blue Last by Martha Grimes

Richard Jury #17. One of Jury's old police coworkers and friends is ill and asks Jury's help in solving a murder. Ms. Grimes is a very fine author and this book has a very complex plot and great characters. Very well done English mystery which I very much enjoyed until the ending which I hated. So 4 stars instead of 5.

Still working my way through J.D. Robb's In Death series featuring Detective Eve Dallas one book at a time. I may catch up one day in the distant future!

Celebrity in Death #34 (of 60 books) is a good one with the death of a cast member in the movie production of one of Eve's famous cases. Less dramatic and intense than some in the series but with an engrossing mystery and plenty of interaction between the main characters.

Smokin" Seventeen by Janet Evanovich

Stephanie Plum #17. The cops are finding bodies buried on the lot where the bail bond agency was. And while Stephanie and Lula do their thing Stephanie is being stalked and also pursued by a new guy who wants her as his girlfriend. It's another cute lightweight adventure mystery from Ms. Evanovich. I liked it -- 3 stars.

Mona of the Manor by Armistead Maupin

In this final book in the series, an American couple are booked at the British manor house/hotel belonging to Lady Roughton (aka Mona), and there's plenty going on there. The book works fine as a standalone.

Reading a novel I should have DNFed some time ago, but it's part of my ongoing thing with poison pen mysteries -- Murder in the Snow by Gladys Mitchell. I'm dying of boredom with this one, the first time this has happened since I've started reading these things. We're in a cabin in the woods at the moment, but when I get home I'll be reading The Great When by Alan Moore.

Finished Pity Him Afterwards by Donald E. Westlake. A relatively short 1964 crime novel and interesting character study of a man with mental illness and violent tendencies.

Potsdam Station by David Downing

John Russell #4. .... Berlin & Moscow, 1945. Russell, his girlfriend Effi and his son Paul try to survive the deadly and frightening last days of WW II. I've liked the series pretty well up until now but this book is full -- page after page -- of details of the hellish environment of those terrible days and lengthy descriptions of the fear, starvation, brutality and torture of the Nazis and Communists as chaos rules. I got about halfway through the book and skipped to the end to see who survives. This is something i never do. Don't know if I'll continue the series or not. 1 star.
