I tried I Am Pilgrim a couple of times after seeing all the fans, but I quit. There are lots of books I'd rather spend time with! Hope your next choice is better, Prosenjit. 😊
The stories of H.G. Wells no doubt inspired a lot of today's tales of the supernatural. The Door in the Wall is one example. There's this door, through which lies ...

Fredrik Backman excels at showing what life looks like from different ages. In And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer, Grandpa and grandson Noah, converse (often just in Grandpa's confused mind). A short and moving read.

I'm finishing the week with a review of
26 Below by Kimberley Woodhouse. This thriller was a bit uneven for me.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've moved sideways to a 'Bosch-adjacent' entry in the Bosch universe by Michael Connelly. The Poet is an especially nasty serial killer whose identity is amazingly well hidden.

Strip
by Thomas Perry.Perry writes great crime adventures and this is a good one. The lives of a strip-club owner, a drug king, a former bar owner, a police detective with a problem at home you won't expect, and various hangers-on and low-lives collide with deadly results in sunny L.A. Exciting fast-moving plot and great characters. I really liked it, 4 stars.
Lord of the Flies by William Golding. A classic that has not held up. 3/5

Finished The Trees by Percival Everett. Brilliant book, a little gory, but a satirical, beautifully written, raucous, rage fueled examination of white supremacy and lynchings. How Everett could take that subject and write something frequently laugh out loud funny, is only one of the mysteries.
Hi All,When I heard that an "Ultimate Mystery Edition" of Agatha Christies classic "And Then There Were None" was coming out on 10th October, I had to give it a read and was very thankful to get an early review copy.
The twist with this edition is that with the ebook version, you don't get the final chapter. Instead, when you finish the book, theres a weblink which the prompts you to guess the murderer. You are then emailed the final chapter to see if you were correct.
In the hardback edition, the final chapter is in an envelope at the rear of the book.

Copper River
by William Kent KruegerThis is book #6 in the 'Cork O'Connor' series, published in 2006. As I've mentioned before, I won't be reviewing the early books in this long series, but I'll give a capsule summary.
In book #5 (Mercy Falls) Sheriff Cork O'Connor of Aurora, Minnesota got on the wrong side of a rich powerful man called Lou Jaboby. Jakoby put a $500,000 bounty on Cork's head, and a slew of hitmen are after Cork.
As Copper River opens, a hitman got lucky and shot Cork in the leg. Cork hustled off to the Upper Peninsula of MIchigan, where his cousin Jewel (a veterinarian) lives with her teenage son Wren. Jewel patches up Cork's leg, and he has to stay while he heals.
Meanwhile, Wren and his friends Stash and Charlie (a girl) are out smoking pot one night when they see what might be a body floating down the Copper River, which flows into Lake Superior. Lo and behold, a girl's body shows up in Lake Superier. This starts a chain reaction where someone is trying to shut up the teenagers.
Cork, Jewel, cops, and a private detective named Dina get involved in (what turns out to be) a very complicated case. Meanwhile, Cork is trying to 'hide' from the hitmen until all that hullaballoo with Lou Jakoby is resolved.
A good addition to the series. 4 stars

The Hellfire Conspiracy
by Will ThomasBarker and Llewelyn #4. ..... London, 1885. Barker and Llewelyn are hired to find a little girl who has gone missing. The case goes from bad to worse. It seems this girl is not the only one but B & L persevere. The plot and characters are constructed very well and it's an interesting mystery. The book contains a great amount of information about what life was like in London in 1885. I liked it, 3 stars.
