The October Man
by Ben AaronovitchRivers of London #7. Big changes in the series. A series of murders in the wine country of Germany and Tobias Winter, apprentice wizard, is assigned the case. No Peter Grant or any of the previous characters but the the short book is written in the same style and the same magic rules still apply. And Tobias is rather similar to Peter. Different but sort of the same. I really liked it, 4 stars.
Paranoid
by Lisa JacksonThe twenty-year reunion of Edgewater High School in Edgewater, Oregon bodes ill for some of the graduates....especially when the murders start.
Good suspense novel. 4 stars

Christine wrote: "I finished my 88th book"Looks like you'll easily top 100 books for the year Christine. 👍
Finished CAST by Simon Brett. His 1975 debut. Identified as a cozy mystery, not sure about that. Was hard to get invested in the story without fully realized characters and uneven pacing.
I'm finishing out the week with
A Merry Little Murder Plot by Jenn McKinlay https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

A Fatal Grace
by Louise PennyI'm catching up with some early books in the 'Chief Inspector Armand Gamache' series that I missed. In this book, the head of the Surete du Quebec investigates a very bizarre murder in Three Pines.

I am enjoying a series of novellas by Aussie author Nick Earls, which make up the Wisdom Tree collection. The first, Gotham, begins as a superficial pop star interview in New York, but develops into something more.
My review of Gotham: Wisdom Tree 1======
The second, Venice, is set in Brisbane, where a ypunger brother makes himself indispensable.
My review of Venice: Wisdom Tree 2
Finished Japanese Tales of Mystery & Imagination by Edogawa Rampo, which I enjoyed. Neat variations on Western crime stories. Brief review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Now on to some ghost stories by Reggie Oliver, A Maze for the Minotaur. I'm into the fifth story, and thinking this is a collection I'm likely to finish rather than set aside for later.

I love Reggie Oliver's stories, and A Maze for the Minotaur is a good one.
There is a dramatized collection of Rampo's stories available on dvd called "Rampo Noir," and I feel nauseated just thinking about it. Loved the book, but the film was just way too much.

I wish his collections came out in more affordable editions. Tartarus makes quality products, but a bit pricey for me.

Currently about to finish another book in my list of poison-pen mysteries, The Bells at Old Bailey, by Dorothy Bowers (1947). Then it's back to current times with The Cracked Mirror by Chris Brockmyre

But then you have to read off a Kindle and ... no. Not there yet.

Now starting THE BIRDWATCHER by William Shaw, the first novel in his ongoing series set in England and featuring detective sergeant Alexandra Cupidi. I read the author's Breen & Tozer mystery novels last year and really enjoyed them. So I'm hoping this new series will also measure up.
Queen Macbeth
by Val McDermidRenowned author Val McDermid tells the TRUE story of Lady Macbeth, gleaned from Scottish history. Was Lady Macbeth really a murderous woman? Maybe. But not like in Shakespeare's play.
Good historical novella. 4 stars

Today I started Il Negromante e l'Ulano (La stagione delle Madri Vol. 1), an historical horror that attracted me from the catalogue of digital books. 😁
