Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read Whale Fall by Elizabeth O'Connor. It takes place on a small island off the coast of Wales in 1938. Told through the voice of an 18-year-old girl who awakens to the harsh realities of objectification and exploitation. A quiet novel that packs a powerful punch.

The first historical fiction I've read on the topic of castrato singers. The editing could have been finetuned, but if you can focus on the plot and ignore the writing, this book can be quite impactful.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read another great book by Maggie O'Farrell. I am amazed at the depth, breadth, and scope of her range. In The Hand That First Held Mine, she juggles two different time lines that overlap at the end. And she does it so well and with such skill. She is currently one of my favorite authors.
