State of Paradise by Laura van den Berg
The audiobook shattered my state of paradise. Might work better for those who enjoy stream-of-consciousness writing.

The Sea Gives Up the Dead Stories by Molly Olguín
A fantasy-horror short story collections that worked for me in every way except for the endings of the stories. But lit fic and slice-of-life lovers might still enjoy it.

I expected much better of this Korean hit, but it seems quite confused about the age group it is targeting.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I finally read a classic that I've been meaning to read forever. And I'm delighted to say, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez was well worth it.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read The Last Song of Penelope by Claire North. This is the third and final book in her Songs of Penelope series. I've read all three books and they were all fantastic. Each one is told from the point of view of a different goddess. And each is feminist in its orientation. A wonderful series and highly recommended for those who enjoy mythic retellings.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read The Piano Tuner by Daniel Mason. An adventure story of a piano tuner who goes to an outpost in Burma to tune a piano. It has echoes of the lotus-eaters and Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 425 comments Spinning Briar by Rachel Huffmire
Spinning Briar (The Mirror Chronicles #2) by Rachel Huffmire
The second book of the Mirror Chronicles series and almost as good. This is an amazing indie YA SciFi-Fantasy series.

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 425 comments Three middle-grade books that work to different levels.

1. Flying in Colors by Padma Prasad Reddeppa
Flying in Colors by Padma Prasad Reddeppa
A middle-grade historical fiction set in 1970s India. The setting and era are unusual for this genre, but the writing didn't work for me.

2. The Invisibles by Susie Bower

A middle-grade fantasy. Superb concept, decent implementation.

3. The Elixir by Lindsay Galvin

Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 425 comments Upon a Starlit Tide by Kell Woods
Upon a Starlit Tide by Kell Woods
Supposed to be an adult historical fantasy combining Cinderella and The Little Mermaid. but the writing style was a bit too YA for my liking. If you still want to try this, do NOT opt for the audio.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read Lampedusa by Steven Price. It is a fictionalized biography of Guiseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, a Sicilian aristocrat, and the author of The Leopard, a novel published posthumously and one which became a classic in Italy.
Price's diction is lyrical. He paints a beautiful picture of Tomasi as sensitive, cultured, intelligent, and with a mournful spirit. The novel is a meditation on aging. I thought it was wonderful.
