I read The Nakano Thrift Shop by Hiromi Kawakami, translated from the Japanese by Allison Markin Powell. A quirky novel about a young woman working in a thrift shop. I just didn't get the why or wherefore of this novel and much preferred her other novel, Strange Weather in Tokyo, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
One More Mountain by Deborah Ellis
The fifth book of the acclaimed Breadwinner series, a set of MG books talking of a little girl in Afghanistan. An eye-opening story, but best read in series order.

What Makes This Book So Great: Re-Reading the Classics of Science Fiction & Fantasy. I’ve been dipping into this for 2 years now and finally finished it. Jo Walton has inspired me to read a whole lot more sci-fi.
Just finished a reread of a book from my 2016 NetGalley shelf. It was just as enjoyable second time around.

Just finished The Lake House by Kate Morton3.5 stars (4)
It's a good story, plot was interesting, but way too stretched. The story would have been much more enjoyable if it was faster paced.
It also took me 1/3 of the book to start understanding relations of the characters to each other or to a general storyline. At times, time periods were not distinct in the story, so I had to go back to see what part of character's life author is writing. Ending was worth the long read.
In Sickness and In Health / Yom Kippur in a Gym by Nora Gold
Two amazing Jewish novellas in one flip book. Enjoyed this one.

I re-read Independent People by Halldór Laxness; translated from the Icelandic by J.A. Thompson. Laxness won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955. The novel is an absolute masterpiece. I re-read it to prepare for an upcoming group read.

Song of Freedom, Song of Dreams by Shari Green
A novel-in-verse set during the 1989 protests in Berlin. I didn't find the poetic elements impressive but the story is good.

I read Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. A quiet, meditative book about the enduring, four-decades long friendship between two couples. This is the second novel I've read by Wallace Stegner. There is a subdued quality about his writing that I really love.My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Memory Library by Kate Storey
Works exactly as expected, which is both good and boring.

I read another Claire Keegan, her collection of three short stories: So Late in the Day: Stories of Women and Men.Three stories illustrating varying degrees of male misogyny. The stories are as good as her novels. I'm a big fan of her writing.
