2. North Carolina
In North Carolina the AT is about 154 km (95 miles) long to which must be added another 320 km (about 200 miles) that runs along the border with Tennessee. This
is a feature of the trail that you can rightly expect from an itinerary that runs along a mountainous ridge bordering different states. This feature means that along the way
you can enjoy numerous panoramic views over the western part of North Carolina. One particularly beautiful view can be seen in Carver's Gap (pictured above). To the north, Fountain Dam marks the entrance to Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
✱ Read a book set in North Carolina OR
✱ Read a book with a mountain on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in FOUNTAIN DAM.
3. Tennessee
In Tennessee, there are 114 km (71 miles) of trail, in addition to those shared with NC. With the latter state, Tennessee also shares the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where the AT crosses through the central part for about 110 km (70 miles). The park was created in 1934, and almost every year it is listed as the most visited park in the US. Since 1983 it has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 1988 it was declared an International Biosphere Reserve. The highest point reachable along this portion of the AT is Clingmans Dome at 2025 meters (6643 feet), which offers spectacular views. Additionally, during your walk through the park and state you will see many waterfalls, including the impressive Laurel Falls.
✱ Read a book set in Tennessee OR
✱ Read a book with 1, 9, 8 or 3 in its number of pages (share it) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK (three words minimum).
4. Virginia
In Virginia there are 885 km (550 miles) of the AT, with a small portion bordering West Virginia. Some of the best sections of the trail, suitable even for beginners, are in Shenandoah National Park. Authorized by the Congress in 1926, the park was created in December 1935, though there were great difficulties in its realization because a large part of its territory was private property in the hands of different people. The park is home to 154 km (96 miles) of the AT, which are memorable both for the beautiful scenery and views offered, and for the opportunity to observe different wild animals.
✱ Read a book set in Virginia OR
✱ Read a book with a wild animal on the cover (share the cover) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK (three words minimum)..
5. West Virginia
Only 6 km (4 miles) of the AT is within West Virginia. Here the trail crosses the town and historical park of Harper's Ferry, where the Appalachian Trail Conservancy is based. It is the non-profit organization that has been involved in keeping the trail in good condition, as well as carrying out educational and scientific activities since 1925. Let's
take advantage of this short stage to talk about the dangers along the trail. They are essentially what can happen during any hike due to bad weather conditions or the carelessness of the hiker. The only truly dangerous animal you can come across is the American black bear, but in the warmer months it is also possible to come across a couple of poisonous snakes. We must also point out that at times hikers have had bad encounters with two-legged beings - since 1974 there have been an average of 2 murders every 10 years.
✱ Read a book set in West Virginia OR
✱ Read a book in which a murder takes place OR
✱ Read a book whose author's first and last initials can be found in HARPER'S FERRY.
6. Maryland
In Maryland, too, the AT is very short, only 66 km (41 miles). Here we pass through the Washington Monument State Park with its tower erected to honor the first president of the US. Built in 1827, the tower was restored in both 1882 and in 1936. The state park was created in 1934 to help with its conservation and in 1972 the tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Along the way you will also encounter several places linked to the Civil War, in particular the Mason-Dixon Line, which for centuries has separated Maryland from Pennsylvania and more generally the line separating the Southern and Northern States.
✱ Read a book set in Maryland OR
✱ Read a book with a tower on the cover (post cover) OR
✱ Read a book tagged WAR or MILITARY in its GR homepage.
7. Pennsylvania
The AT extends for a whopping 369 km (229 miles) in this state, where the Susquehanna River is regarded as the north-south dividing line of the trail. Pine Grove Furnace State Park is at its center point and is home to The Appalachian Trail Museum. Since 1998 it has paid homage to the greatest hikers; in fact, since 2011 there has been a Hall of Fame dedicated to them. The AT then runs through an area called St. Anthony's Wilderness, which is full of ghost towns that arose when coal mining was an important part of the local economy and have since been abandoned.
✱ Read a book set in Pennsylvania OR
✱ Read a book where a museum is mentioned (share the name of the museum) OR
✱ Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in PINE GROVE FURNACE STATE PARK (three words minimum).
8. New Jersey
In New Jersey there is 116 km (72 miles) of the AT and the risk of encountering black bears is particularly high in this section. Here we meet the southernmost of the original glacial lakes, Sunfish Pond. But be aware, swimming is prohibited! Along the 48 km (30 miles) located on the border with New York, the path crosses swampy areas, so you will be walking on long wooden walkways. In this state, as in many others, it is forbidden to camp outside the designated areas. Every year a guide is published that contains all the useful information for a thru-hiker, with particular emphasis on places to sleep, eat and where to find drinking water. It also explains various limitations that exist, in particular those concerning the lighting of fires.
✱ Read a book set in New Jersey OR
✱ Read a book where the characters go camping OR
✱ Read a book where the first name of MC starts with a letter in SUNFISH POND.
9. New York
In the state of New York the trail, 142 km (88 miles) long, has the lowest elevation of
the entire route. The lowest point at 38 m (124 ft) above sea level, is found at the Bear Mountain Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River. Here you will also find the only train station present on the entire route. It is part of the Harlem Line of the Metro-North Railroad. The section that passes through Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks is the oldest portion of the trail, having been constructed in 1923. From the top of Bear Mountain be sure admire the Hudson River Valley and glimpses of the New York City skyline.
✱ Read a book set in New York OR
✱ Read a book where the MC takes a train OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in HUDSON RIVER.
10. Connecticut
The 84 km (52 miles) of the AT in this state run along the ridge to the west of the Housatonic Valley and then continue into the Hudson Valley through the Catskill Mountains. The trail initially runs alongside the Schaghticoke Indian Reservation. Coming from the south, you will arrive in this area when the fall foliage is at its height. Hunting season will probably also have begun. In this regard, carefully inform yourself of its dates in the various states crossed and, if necessary, wear a jacket of a nice bright orange to get noticed by hunters!
✱ Read a book set in Connecticut OR
✱ Read a book where a character is Native American or has Native American origins (tell us who) OR
✱ Read a book whose author's first and last initials can be found in CATSKILL MOUNTAINS.
✔️ 11. Massachusetts
✱ Read a book where a character is an artist (tell us what kind) OR
Das Mädchen mit dem Perlenohrring by Tracy Chevalier, January, 19,
A story about the girl in the painting by the artist Johannes Vermeer.

12. Vermont
In Vermont, the 241 km (150 miles) of the AT initially coincides with the southern portion of the Long Trail. The latter is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States, having been constructed between 1910 and 1930, It runs through the whole of Vermont. It was this trail that inspired the creation of the AT. You must absolutely avoid hiking the AT in this state during the so-called "mud season", which runs from mid-April to Memorial Day (last Monday in May), as adverse weather conditions make the route dangerous.
✱ Read a book set in Vermont OR
✱ Read a book set in April or May OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in LONG TRAIL.
✔️ 13. New Hampshire
✱ Read a book whose author's first and last initials can be found in WHITE MOUNTAIN.
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende, June 28th
14. Maine
In Maine the AT is 452 km (281 miles) long and here you will find the most difficult conditions, even for experienced hikers, as the terrain is often slippery and several waterways have to be waded. You do get to take a boat to cross the Kennebec River. One area is known as the "Hundred-Mile Wilderness" as it is the most isolated of the entire route. In this state, however, the isolation makes it is easier to spot elk.
✱ Read a book set in Maine OR
✱ Read a book in which an MC spends some time in the hospital (tell us why) OR
✱ Read a book where the first name of MC starts with a letter in KENNEBEC.
15. Finish: Mount Katahdin (Maine)
The northern terminus of the AT is at the top of Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park.
Its name means "The Greatest Mountain" in the language spoken by the local Native American tribe, and it is actually the highest mountain in the state of Maine at 1606
meters or 5269 feet in altitude. We are still far from the border with Canada, but at the end of this journey you can evaluate whether to continue the following year with the path created to complete the Appalachian Trail in all its entirety.
✱ Read the last book in a series OR
✱ Read a book set in Canada OR
✱ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in MOUNT KATAHDIN
