A Fairy Garden Mystery #2

A Glimmer of a Clue

Rate this book
From Agatha Award-winning author Daryl Wood Gerber, the second in an enchantingly whimsical series featuring Courtney Kelly, the owner of a fairy-gardening and tea shop in Carmel, California. It's a special place brimming with good vibes, lush greenery, miniature fairy accessories, and soothing fountains; the perfect venue for book club teas and home to a cat named Pixie. But in Carmel-by-the-Sea, things aren't all sweetness and fairy lights...

When Courtney's friend Wanda gets into a ponytail-pulling wrestling match in public with a nasty local art critic, Courtney stops the fight with the help of a garden hose. But Lana Lamar has a talent for escalating things and creating tension, which she succeeds in doing by threatening a lawsuit, getting into yet another scuffle--in the midst of an elegant fundraiser, no less--and lobbing insults around like pickleballs.

Next thing Courtney knows, Lana is on the floor, stabbed with a decorative letter opener from one of Courtney's fairy gardens, and Wanda is standing by asking "What have I done?" But the answer may not be as obvious as it seems, since Wanda is prone to sleepwalking and appears to be in a daze. Could she have risen from her nap and committed murder while unconscious? Or is the guilty party someone else Lana's ticked off, like her long-suffering husband? To find out, Courtney will have to dig up some dirt...

A Glimmer of a Clue is the second book the Fairy Garden Mysteries written by Daryl Wood Gerber. I read the first book in the series last year and held out a bit before jumping on this one, but when the blog tour popped up for the book in June, I signed up... I really enjoy Gerber's writing style, characters, settings, and plots. I've read both books in her French Bistro series and was sad when the publisher put them on hold. I really enjoyed her three Aspen Adams novels, which are in between a cozy and a hardcore mystery, and I hope she'll continue penning more. I haven't yet gotten to her Cheese Shop Mysteries as Avery Adams, but that's on my agenda for later this year, and I recently began reading the Cookbook Nook series too.

The Fairy Garden Mysteries take place in a wonderfully chic California town where some people can see the fairies all around the gardens. Main character Courtney used to be in landscaping, but now she owns her own shop where they build fairy gardens and so much more. Her fairy, Fiona, is trying to re-earn trust from her queen after making some bad choices in the past. Together, the two solve a new crime when Courtney's best friend's mother is accused of a murder. The town is filled with charming shops, and the book has so much background on fairies and gardens that you're completely immersed in a glimmering culture of fun and fantasy.

The mystery is good. There are at least six viable suspects, all with side stories of their own... and Courtney works with the local detective to solve the case; sometimes he likes her, sometimes he runs from her! Most of the time, Courtney is pushing her way in, perhaps a little too aggressively, but it makes for fun scenes. She's interested in a guy she went to high school with a decade earlier, so there's a bit of romance and some family values with her dad too. Though the series is somewhat magical, there aren't a lot of these moments except for the concept of a fairy being someone people can see (not all though... it depends on whether you believe).

I am intrigued by the mysteries in these books, but I will admit... I want to learn more about the Fairy Queen and the multiple types of fairies that actually exist. It's a subject I know little about, and whereas in the first book, it wasn't a strong match to my preferences in mysteries, I found this one grew on me much more. It always takes a new series to settle in... and if you enjoy a different kind of setting with all the traditional wonderful elements in a cozy series and those written my Ms. Gerber, then I recommend giving this one a chance. Plus, there are design ideas and recipes, and an overwhelming desire to visit Carmel in California!

A charming fairy garden supply shop owned by Courtney Kelly makes reading this cozy mystery a delightful treat. Can you imagine having a fairy friend and companion? Courtney has fairy Fiona, but only those who believe can see and talk to her. In this story, Fiona calls upon her fairy network to help swiftly solve the murder.

Author Gerber’s imaginative descriptions make this story a joy to read, and it seemed so relaxing to me reading about the many lovely items stocked in Courtney’s shop—I especially love the beautiful teacups and saucers. The author also generously adds several delicious sounding recipes for readers to try. I’m happy to see just a hint of romance between cafe owner, Brady, and Courtney. The supporting characters are likeable unless they’re portrayed the opposite! There are a bunch of guilty-looking people for many different reasons making it fun to try solving the whodunnit before the final reveal. This is a wonderful cozy mystery story!

I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you.

I read the first book in the series A Sprinkling of Murder and liked it. I looked forward to reading the second book in the series. I enjoyed the book but the cocktail party scene jumped around between all the characters and different topics that I found it a little confusing. Once I got past that and into the murder it was good and flowed nicely. I enjoyed the characters and especially the fairies and reading about their world. All in all I look forward to the next in the series.

Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for this ARC.

Ms. Wood Gerber has written another excellent cozy mystery addition to the Fairy Garden series. Once I picked this book I didn't put it down until I had finished it.

Courtney is a great main character as she is determined to make sure her friends are cleared of any suspicion when it comes to murder and mayhem. She's also kind and helpful and so creative when it comes to her fairy gardens. Her shop must be a fantastic space to spend time in for any one who is a creative gardener. I do adore her fairy, Fiona, who often makes me laugh as she sleuths along with Courtney. It was also fun to meet Zephyr and learn more about Merryweather, too. A quickly paced plot, several suspects who all had motives for murder, several twists that fooled me completely and then a dramatic reveal as I never guessed who "done it". I'll be waiting for the next one impatiently.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington Publishing via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.

This was the perfect second installment of this series. We get to know the fairies and the characters better and read about Courtney, the fairy shop owner, solving another murder in town.

This book is perfect for those summer days on the beach or relaxing in the backyard with a cold glass of lemonade!

I was given an eARC by the publisher through NetGalley.

I really enjoyed this second volume in the Fairy Garden Mystery series. I love a little magic mixed into the real world because who doesn’t want to believe magic is just beyond what we let ourselves see? The fairies in this series are cute and fun, and I love that Fiona is taking her cues from Sherlock Holmes. Courtney finds herself first on the scene on yet another murder, this one with her good friend Wanda standing nearby with the murder weapon asking “what have I done.” Despite the evidence stacked against Wanda Courtney is sure she is innocent and since the police seem focused on her Courtney needs to investigate again. I liked the mystery and there were some good twists and turns along the way. This light cozy mystery was just the distraction I needed after a long week. I would like to thanks the author for the chance to read and honestly review this book!

This is the first book I’ve read in this series, and I’m so excited that I did. The story is so much fun, I love the fairies, and the characters are really easy to like.
Courtney is busy with her shop and all things fairy, but when murder happens and her good friend is arrested for the nefarious deed, she refuses to stand by and watch her friend be falsely accused.
I loved everything about this book and I’m eagerly awaiting the next one.

A Glimmer of a Clue is the delightful second installment in the Fair Garden Mystery series. This story has everything I enjoy about cozy mysteries - a delightful cast of characters, a charming setting, and an interesting mystery. Courtney Kelly is a strong protagonist. I love that she has such a strong belief that she can see fairies. It adds a bit of magic and whimsy to the story as well as joy. She is surrounded by a great cast of secondary characters, some who believe and some who don't. I enjoy books by Ms. Gerber in large part because of her descriptive writing style. As a reader, I can picture the shop run by Courtney as well a the fairy gardens because of this writing style. The plot moves along nicely keeping resulting in an easy, enjoyable read.

Courtney becomes embroiled in another mystery when her best friend's mother is accused of murder. The victim was not well-liked so the author sets up a number of suspects for the reader to ponder. There are plenty of clues that lead the reader down many paths and point to a number of suspects. I enjoyed trying to unravel the clues to see if I could correctly identify the killer.

This is a wonderful series with interesting characters, a charming setting with a little bit of whimsy and magic thrown in, and a touch of romance. I'll be looking forward to the next book in the series.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through NetGalley. The thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

This series is fun and fanciful! The main character is the owner of a fairy garden store and is really inspiring me to make my own fairy garden as they seem like so much fun to create! This series has wonderfully well developed characters that draw you in and make you want to keep reading more and more about them including several fairies that help solve the current murder mystery that is afoot! I truly enjoyed this installment and am already impatient to read what comes next for these characters. In the meantime, I'll be making my own fairy garden so I can send wishes that this author will write more installments in this series more quickly! Or maybe that she has a writer fairy that can help speed things along!

Very enjoyable story! I think I liked this one better than the first! When we catch up with Courtney and her crew, life is going good. Then someone is murdered and Courtney's friend's mom (and possible future stepmom??) is accused. With the help of her fairy, Courtney tries to find the real killer. There was a part where I did guess who the murderer was, but it wasn't entirely obvious and I still enjoyed the entire ride. I can't wait for the next book (wait, is this even out yet???) and to see Fiona get all her wings!

Thank you NetGalley for a copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Also, I really want to make a fairy garden now!!

A Glimmer of a Clue is the second instalment Daryl Wood Gerber's 'A Fairy Garden Mystery' series. I've also read a couple of the author's books from her 'Cookbook Nook Mystery series'.

In this fabulous cosy mystery, Courtney Kelly owns a magical fairy garden shop and tearoom, called Open Your Imagination, based in the small town of Carmel, California. She has been able to see the fairies from a very young age but there are some sceptics who don't have her ability. She teaches garden design and sells everything from fairy figurines to tinkling wind chimes and it's the perfect place for her book club teas. When local art critic, Lana Lamar is involved in a number of catfights and scuffles at a posh fundraiser she is later found dead with a letter opener sticking out of her. The weapon was an item in Courtney's shop.

The writing style of Daryl Wood Gerber continues to impress and even with the plethora of cast members, the story is easy to follow. Narrator Courtney is a great character and I love her determination and her singlemindedness. I also enjoyed the contributions from the righteous chief fairy, Fiona who helps to solve the case.

The whodunit aspect was great with plenty of opportunities for the most diligent of armchair detectives to play along. Every clue led to a revelation and I really liked the way things were all wrapped up. This tremendously enchanting novel was a hit for me and I am looking forward to reading book three and getting to know all of the characters to a greater degree. If you adore a fantastic cosy mystery with a strong dose of magical realism, don't miss out on A Glimmer of a Clue.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

“A Glimmer of a Clue” unfolds in the first person narrative of Courtney Kelly, the owner of “Open Your Imagination,” a shop specializing in fairy garden landscape design in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. She is “assisted” in her business by Fiona, a fairy-in-training, who needs to help a human to gain her wings. Fortunately for Fiona, there are a lot of people around who need help. The story is entertaining and whimsical, but of course a murder is thrown in to complicate things. The story is told mostly in the light hearted and natural conversations of friends, even when the dialogues are probative, investigative, or questioning.

A confrontation at The Spectacular, an annual fundraiser for community outreach programs in the arts, leads to murder, and a suspect is soon arrested. Courtney feels the police have the wrong person, so she sets out to find the true culprit which should be easy since no one really liked the victim. The investigation moves along at a casual yet focused and deliberate pace. The murder is more complex than it originally seemed, and the search is going nowhere. Fiona chides Courtney for not being a trained professional while trying to obey the rules of her own probation.

“A Glimmer of a Clue” starts each chapter with an interesting quotation, and includes a convenient list of the likeable characters (Humans, Fairies, and Pets) for reference when needed. The plot is compelling with abundant mystery but without buckets of blood. Best of all, the characters share their favorite food and drink recipes at the end. I received a review copy of “A Glimmer of a Clue” from Daryl Wood Gerber and Kensington books. It is quick to read with a satisfying plot and pleasing characters. This is the second book in the “Fairy Garden Mystery” series, and I am sure there will be more to come.

Courtney is a wonderful character, her garden shop is fantastic. I like that she isn’t afraid to jump in when a friend requires help, even physically. The fact that she can see and talk to fairies is a bonus. In “A Glimmer of a Clue”, Courtney has her hands full when her friend Wanda gets in a scuffle with Lana, a not-so-nice or friendly town bully. Lana turns up dead, and all eyes are on Wanda. Fairy’s come to the rescue, or at least they try, but in the end, it’s up to Courtney to stop a murderer.

The characters in this story, and so far in the series, are colorful, easy to like, and have a sense of whimsy. Not everyone can see fairies or wants too but those that do work at it and strive to be worthy. I was skeptical when I started reading the first book in this series, but after reading the book, I was hooked. The garden center that Courtney owns is delightful; I would love to have something like it in my neighborhood! My goal is to build a fairy garden just like one of Courtney’s fabulous creations. The people who come and go throughout the book keep things interesting, and the fairies, although I do not feel there are enough of or play a significant enough role, are fun to read about and picture. Fiona, Courtney’s Fairy, and recent Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts is especially thrilling to imagine.

There are plenty of suspects, the victim caused problems wherever she went, and it doesn’t take much to convince the reader that she would be murdered sooner or later. Red herrings abound. The reader may find themselves not sure who the killer is but happy when at long last, they find out. Courtney turns her sleuthing skills into actions, and by the end of “A Glimmer of a Clue”, she has unmasked the killer and saved her best friend’s mother with her fairy’s help, of course. I am happy to recommend this book and series to readers who want a touch of whimsy, a great mystery, a garden shop to spend endless hours imagining, and unforgettable characters.

I am a huge fan of Gerber's work due to skilled writing style but I especially enjoyed book one of this new series. This made me eager to get my hands on this second book which is just as good, if not better, then book one. We catch back up with Courtney as she runs her adorable garden shop. The local.FIFA Lana is causing lots of conflict that Courtney tries to avoid but then she finds the woman dead stabbed with a letter opener from one of fairy gardens. Wanda, her BFF's mom, is standing over her in a daze. This makes her the main suspect but Courtney is determined to prove otherwise with the help of our two favorite fairies. This is a well written cozy that allows the reader to easily picture the setting while also bringing the characters to life sprinkled with a touch of magic. Makes for a fabulously fun read. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

This book was such a joy to read. It is so well-crafted allowing me to lose myself in the story. The descriptions of the fairy gardens and fairies bring out the little girl in me. I want to build my own fairy garden and have my own fairy companion. The mystery is full of red herring to keep the reader guessing whodunit. I was surprised by who the murder was. A bonus for the reader who enjoys making food that was mentioned//inspired in/by their beloved books, several recipes for beverages and food (both regular and gluten-free versions.) I a looking forward to the next one in the series.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.

This is the second book in the Fairy Garden Mystery series and it is just as delightful as the first. Courtney owns a shop that helps people create fairy gardens and serves tea. She gets a bit of help from her very own fairy, Fiona. Fiona is a bit snarky although she is trying to toe the line and be admitted back into the full realm of fairies.

Courtney's best friend's mother (and second mother to her) is accused of murder during an Extravaganza. Courtney, Fiona and a few other fairies team up to clear Wanda's name. The circumstances of the murder were intriguing to me as I have a history of sleepwalking when stressed. I understand how helpless everyone feels while trying to find the truth.

I love the town of Carmel! The shops and the townspeople come to life in the descriptions. I'm really interested to see not only where the romance with Courtney and Brady leads but also with her dad and Wanda. This all makes for a sweet side story.

The victim is disliked by so many people that it is difficult to pinpoint who actually killed her. I enjoyed all the twists and turns that kept me on my toes until the culprit is revealed.

The recipes at the end of the book are an added plus.

This series has grabbed my attention and I look forward to seeing where it leads. I will anxiously await the next book.

Thank you to @netgalley and @kensingtonbooks for allowing me to read this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Any time I pick up a cozy mystery by Daryl Wood Gerber, I know I’m in for a treat. An engaging writing style, clever plotting, and likable characters are a sure thing, and all this (plus a little fairy magic) can be found in her newest book, A Glimmer of a Clue!

Courtney and her fairy garden shop immediately draw you into the story, along with the colorful cast of supporting characters (including swoony Brady). The fairies, especially Courtney’s fairy Fiona, add an element of whimsy and magical realism as well as being an effective plot device when it comes to helping Courtney snoop for clues, etc. It did get a tad bogged down at times in the whys and wherefores of the fairy world but it stays pretty natural to the story even then and provides the necessary background for readers who haven’t read book one yet. I also got a chuckle out of Fiona’s recent interest in Sherlock Holmes books and how that shows up in her sleuthing lol.

The murder mystery is full of twists and turns and possible suspects. No one liked the victim (of course) so it’s not hard to find people with a reason to kill her. But there are lots of interesting layers that make it more complex than it first appears. From the prime suspect who appears to be sleepwalking at the time of the murder to the cloaked witness who has her own set of secrets and the highly-contested pickleball championship rules, there’s definitely more going on beneath the surface in this mystery, which makes it difficult (and enjoyable) to narrow down the culprit. You may even find yourself tapping into your own inner Sherlock Holmes to help Courtney and Fiona figure out whodunit.

Bottom Line: A sleepwalking murder suspect, a mysterious woman in a cloak, a spooky gray cat, and a whole host of plausible (and intriguing) culprits – throw in the quaint Carmel-by-the-Sea setting, a hint of romance, and a bit of fairy magic for good measure & you’ve got an engaging cozy mystery that will keep you turning the pages! I really enjoy this author’s writing voice and the way she crafts a plot, and A Glimmer of a Clue is no exception. I also loved the bits of magical realism, thanks to the fairy elements, and I thought the concept of Courtney’s shop sounded like lots of fun! The victim in this story said that we all need a little make-believe in our lives, and Daryl Wood Gerber does a great job giving us those moments – and a fantastic mystery – as we read A Glimmer of a Clue!

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read and review "A Glimmer of a Clue", the second book in Daryl Wood Gerber's "Fairy Garden Mystery" series. I have to say that I loved everything about it....this installment definitely lived up to the high standards set by book 1, and I eagerly await the next book in the series.

Main character Courtney comes across as a genuine, real person. She's smart, hard-working, kind, and loyal; she seems like the kind of person you could meet (and really like) in real life. The fact that she can see and talk to fairies adds a fun element to her character, and to the story. It's a tribute to the author that these magical realism elements fit right in with the narrative, and feel believable within the parameters of the story.

The mystery element (in this case, the murder of a woman that virtually nobody liked) was very well done. I enjoy Courtney as an amateur sleuth, because she actually makes an effort to investigate. She is methodical and focused in her approach, and talks openly to the police. (Of course, they want her to stay out of things, but since she's finding clues they didn't, they can't complain too much.) Due to the victim's disagreeable personality, there is no shortage of suspects and motives for Courtney to research. The mystery takes front-and-center stage in this book, which I really appreciated.

However, all the normal cozy elements are represented as well. The reader will spend time at work with Courtney in her shop, and as she interacts with her friends and pet. There are plenty of lighter moments to offset the murder investigation, and I enjoyed them very much. Some side plots from the first book are addressed (a friend's missing daughter, Fiona's quest to earn her wings, Courtney's relationship with her father), but I don't think anyone starting the series with this book would have any trouble picking up on what's happening.

All in all, an EXCELLENT cozy mystery with a bit of magical flair. Five out of five slices of perfect provolone!

A Glimmer of a Clue

Do you believe in Fairies? Even if you don’t, you’ll change your mind by the time you finish the enchanting book, “A Glimmer of a Clue” by Daryl Wood Gerber. This is the second book in the Fairy Garden Mystery series, and my first foray into the new series. I adore Ms. Gerber’s books, and sure enough, I really enjoyed this story.

The heroine of the series, Courtney Kelly, owns a delightful fairy garden and tea shop, and teaches customers how to make their own fairy gardens. Situated in the beautiful town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, you’d expect things are lovely and easygoing. Not so much when it comes to murder. Courtney’s friend Wanda gets into a very public brouhaha with mean-girl and local art critic, Lana. Things go from bad to worse when said mean-girl Lana is found stabbed with a letter opener from one of Courtney’s fairy gardens, and Wanda is standing over her in a daze. To prove Wanda's innocence, Courtney digs into Lana’s life to discover who the real killer is, assisted by her friends and her very own fairy protector.

Ms. Gerber has always done a marvelous job when it comes to describing her settings, bringing the towns to life in my imagination. Her characters are people you want to be friends with—except, you know, the murderers. Each character is distinct and easily identifiable and has their own voice.

Cozy Mysteries are my favorite genre, and this series is now one of my top favorites, along with Ms. Gerber’s Cookbook Nook series. Add in the fairies, Pixie the cat, the beautiful setting, great characters, and it’s the recipe for a delightful read. Speaking of recipes, there are some delicious ones included in each book!

I received an advance copy of the book, and am very happy to share my opinion of the story.

A Glimmer of a Clue is the second installment in Daryl Wood Gerber's A Fairy Garden Mystery Series. This is a magical cozy mystery that does not disappoint. Courtney Kelly owns a garden shop in the beach town of Carmel-by-the-Sea and has a knack for creating fairy gardens. I was enchanted from the start by the setting which includes real life fairies if you are lucky enough to see them. This is a cozy mystery and all is not sweetness and light when Courtney's friend Wanda is accused of murder. Courtney uses her sleuthing skills, with the help of a few friends and fairies, to try to determine who the real murderer is. The writing is top notch, with action and dialogue to keep the story moving without losing the cozy element. There are many possible suspects which keep the reader guessing until the end. The small town setting, the close community, the fairy aspect and some awesome recipes made this a very enjoyable read. I will be eagerly looking forward to the next installment in this series.

The characters are all very likable. I really enjoy reading about Courtney's relationship with Fiona, and it's so much fun when other characters first begin to notice fairies.
The fairies give a unique and lighthearted appeal. Characters are well developed and have ongoing arcs that should keep readers coming back for answers. I'd love to learn more about the "fairy world."
There are, however, a lot of characters to keep track of and therefore is limited to how much background can be fit in, leading to some to be more detailed than others. Perhaps future books will bring these characters more into focus?
I felt Courtney focused too hard on a particular suspect so it's obvious it's a misdirect, but the true killer was a well-kept secret up until the reveal. I did have some suspicions but nothing concrete.
As always, we are treated to some wonderful recipes at the close, ones I will for sure be trying. It never fails to amaze me how the author manages to come up with such delectable recipes, in addition to a lovely story.

When a lifelong troublemaker is murdered there could be multiple suspects but at the top of the list is Courtney's friend Wanda. Wanda is found with the victim but her daughter says she was sleepwalking. Courtney, with the help of fairy-in-training Fiona , is now working to help find the real killer.

When I started this story I was excited to read another great mystery by Daryl Wood Gerber but I didn't count on being so quickly drawn into the concept of making a fairly garden. The whimsy and beauty had me researching where to buy supplies while still reading the first chapter. I look forward to more books in the Fairy Garden Mystery series. I just giggle and kick my feet because sometimes you just want to ditch the real world for a bit and check what Fiona and Courtney are up to.
Which more likely than not is crime solving and fairy garden making.

Impeccable vibes.

For those of you with a tired mind, read this.
You won't regret it.

A Glimmer of a Clue by Daryl Wood Gerber is a lovely follow-up to the first book in this series. I absolutely love the uniqueness of the fairy gardens and Courtney's shop within the story. Courtney, Fiona, and Joss are such delightful characters. Oooh and Brady! I'm excited to see how the characters continue to develop within this series. I think this is probably one of the only series I read that is set in California. I really like how the author is able to describe both the town of Carmel and all of the shops. This series is a wonderful balance between a traditional cozy and a paranormal cozy. The magic within the story seems just real enough that you truly do open your imagination to the possibilities.

Though I just finished this one, I'm already looking forward to summer 2022 and the release of book three: A Hint of Mischief. This is the perfect series to read in the summer...light, mysterious, and just enough magic to keep you guessing.

I received an advanced copy of this book in the hopes that I would share my honest review. My thoughts are my own and are not influenced in any way.

On a weekend where I needed a little pick me up, this book certainly fit the bill! I was lucky enough to receive an advanced readers edition, and I could not have loved this addition to the Fairy Garden Mystery series more!
The characters in this series are for the most part people I would want to hang around with, and the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea is a place I would love to visit. I love the idea of fairy gardens, and even though I have a black thumb as opposed to a green thumb, I think I may have to give this a shot! I certainly would love to welcome some fairies into my life!
Do yourself a favor and get this book as soon as it comes out - you won’t regret it!

A GLIMMER OF A CLUE, the second book in the Fairy Garden Mystery series by Daryl Wood Gerber, is an enchanting cozy mystery that is so sweet, you almost forget that murder is the theme! Starting each chapter is a literary quote that involves fairies, which adds a nice touch. Ms. Gerber’s use of fairies to both lighten the overall feel of the book and to assist the protagonist, Courtney Kelly, in solving the crime, adds to the appeal. As owner of the delightful shop, Open Your Imagination, Courtney creates an inviting spot for locals and tourists alike to while their time away in a charming atmosphere. I greatly enjoy the addition of Courtney teaching her customers how to create their own fairy gardens and, with plenty of details included, the reader should be able to create a fairy garden at home. With memorable characters, humans, pets, and fairies alike, I found myself immersed in the detailed magic of the story and couldn’t put the book down.

While the setting and characters are delightful, there is a murder mystery to solve and once again, Ms. Gerber proves she can craft a well-plotted whodunit! Courtney’s best friend’s mom (and Courtney’s father’s potential love interest) is arrested for murdering the town’s nasty newspaper columnist art critic during a fundraising gala. With plenty of suspects to keep the reader guessing, it was a fun ride to follow along with Courtney and her fairy-in-training, Fiona, as they sussed out clues. With clever misdirection to trip up the armchair sleuth, I didn’t see the culprit until the reveal. The author neatly ties up the strands of the clues and left me feeling like I wanted to visit Carmel-by-the-Sea and meet Courtney and her friends in person!

Not only does Courtney serve a delicious tea with yummy treats at her fairy-themed garden shop, but several of her good friends in town own eating establishments. As a result, reader beware, you’ll be drooling while enjoying this book. Ms. Gerber includes several recipes for foods mentioned in the story at the back of the book. She includes sweet and savory along with gluten-free and regular alike.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
