Review: I usually really like Erica Ridley books but this one was rather strange. A group of orphans were taken in by a viscount who is known to them as bean. They take on missions to help others. Chloe, aged 28 likes viewing parliamentary proceedings and likes looking at one of the MPs. The MPs father is a gambling Duke who steals a painting from their house. Trying to get that back as well as shutting down a boarding school that is taking advantage of poorer children is the mission. This seems impossible especially when bean is struck with smallpox and the MP seems to find Chloe invisible.
The book ends in a cliffhanger (if you can call it that) and was quite disjointed in my opinion. It is a prequel so I might try the next in the series at some point to see if it is better.

A Deal with the Elf King by Elise Kova

How it fits: The book was published on November 6, 2020.

Review: A Deal with the Elf King is a Hades & Persephone retailing in a science fiction world. Elise Kova is an author that knows how to build fantastical worlds. You feel for Luella from the start as people and circumstances pull her. Eldas is the perfect icy Elf King who loses his frostbitten walls and becomes a genuine person. The entire world of Midscape is so realistic and flushed out without boring the reader with details.
I found myself wanting to learn more about the side characters, aka Willow, Rinni, and Harrow, a little more than King Eldas and Luella. (Though dark, handsome brooding elves are my kryptonite.) I loved watching their relationship bloom but want more side character development in the next novel.
I am looking forward to reading the next installment.

Sass, take your time; we should also enjoy the books we read. It is also part of the reading challenge.

Ok, so this was just...gah! It could have been so much better if everything wasn't just crammed into 175 pages OR if the author hadn't tried to make everything in the book be a bombshell revelation. This was just too over the top for me. And then the ending...just so not based in reality.
I have to admit though, I did get teared up with the scene with Scott and Callie at the end when he learns the truth about his mom. So that's why it got *2 STARS* -- with all the eye rolling I did, the author managed to tug at my heartstrings with that one.
There's another book to this series featuring Callie's big brother/guardian Bastien, but I have no interest in continuing this series.

Take a Number, Amy Daws – 10/18/21 – ✮✮✮✮✰

How the Book Qualifies ➔ initially published October 8, 2020
Review — Amy Daws’ books always leave a smile on my face and this one is no different! Dean finally gets his happily ever after...although he fights it all the way. I wasn’t sure Norah was a good fit for Dean, but she really is. She is quirky and a bit annoying at times, but has a good heart and knows what she wants. This book had some heavier discussions throughout because both main characters have issues with their parents...sometimes it made for funny moments, other times it helped move their relationship forward. A Wait with Me book wouldn’t be complete without Kate and Miles, who are ramping up to their nuptials in this book. The other two couples from this series also jump in, with Max bringing up the rear. I’m not sure if Max is next, but I think there was some potential foreshadowing...I guess I’ll see!

@Sass...sorry this task led to a bummer book!"
At least I got it off my TBR! I love this challenge because it does help me knock off stuff.
Thanks for checking us in!!

@Sass...sorry this task led to a bummer book!"
I'm glad yours was better!!
And we'll be on pace to get our new task tomorrow morning!

This month with two interactive reading challenges, I managed to read 17 books and count. It is 1.1 books per day until now. Only my Meet & Greet challenge is a little back, even though I am currently in the middle of three books for that challenge as well.

Sorry your book was rubbish. I’m struggling through

that's awesome!

Sorry your book was rubbish. I’m struggling through

I love that you have IRL book club. I've got to find one of those!

Task 15 - 104. Read 8 holiday books.
The qualification for this task can be the generic 'holiday' or specific like Christmas or Halloween. Holiday needs to be the American type of holiday as opposed to the British. Qualification can come from the title, series, precis, tags or lists. Remember to let me know how you know the books work so I know where to look to confirm them. Please include any info or links as necessary.

Sorry, your book was rubbish. I'm struggling through

Well, I know my best friend that lives in Switzerland is reading. I don't think we read the same things. I wish I had a book club like yours, Hazel. I read & listened

Sass, we have our good reads, and we have our not-so-good reads.

This was adorable! I didn't think I would like this nearly as much as I did. Maybe it was the similarities to the movie "The Wedding Date" which is one of my all time favorites or the fact that they even referenced that movie in the book. I have no idea.
But I loved the way this totally predictable, sometimes cheesy, book worked. Maybe I'm just starting to get in the holiday mood. Whatever it was, I was enthralled. This book is #3 in the series, so I'm going to go back to listen to the first two as well.
I hope that the chemistry that I saw between Nikki and Diego will be prevalent in the preceding books because I just adored the two of them together. Insta-love or no!

Review: A nice 2nd chance romance. Actress Amelia is filming a western at Beau’s ranch. The 2 of them fell in love at college but Beau had to return home to take care of family obligations after the death of his mother. Amelia falls in love with the town and buys the rundown movie theatre to restore it for a Christmas movie festival. Beau and Amelia also rediscover their attraction for each other as he teaches her to ride and get over her fear of horses. The paparazzi find out and descend on the ranch causing them problems that they manage to overcome in the end.
This was a nice story but didn’t grip me.

I know that Avigail said that she was going to start on her second book. What's everyone else's plan?

Review: I loved Bella’s and Cade’s story; it’s not perfect; it’s messy and complicated like all genuine relationships as contemporary romances should be.
I enjoyed this seasonal fall book with a small-town feel. Bella, a teacher, is trying to save the arts program at the school. Cade, an indie rock star, grieves his grandmother’s death, comes to take care of his widowed grandfather and, ends up having to do community services, and meets Bella.
The story takes before Halloween, and you can feel the ambiance by getting ready to decorate the city.
The secondary characters complemented Bella & Cade and made me laugh in several parts of the book.
Jae Dawson needs to write stories about many characters inside this book.
This story is interesting because while it is light-hearted and full of love and finding oneself... there is also heartbreak, devastation, a possible drinking problem to overcome, and death. This novel hits some heavy topics in a short amount of time. Everything is concluded in the story and wrapped up very nicely.
I am looking forward to reading more books by Jae Dawson. For a debut book, she did an outstanding job.

Heartbeats and Roses: A Small Town Valentine's Day Romance by Jae Dawson

Pages: 242 based the Amazon site
How it fits:The book takes place around Valentine's Day
Date completed: October 20, 2021
Rating: 5 ⭐
Review:For me, Heartbeats and Roses: A Small Town Valentine's Day Romance is a little bit better than Moonlight and Belladonna.
Even though I would like to see some of the characters from Moonlight and Belladonna again, (the truth you have a glimpse of grandfather Owens, and Rose talks about Cade and Bella.
Rose, our florist who believes in true love, and then you have Liam, our surgeon who thinks true love doesn't exist, especially after what his dad did to his mum many, many years before. In this book, you have feelings like anger and resentment, betrayal, secrets, and mistrust, but friendship, family, and reconnection gave me that happy feeling!
I like how Rose incorporates the Victorian & Edwardian language of flowers. Mainly when she organizes a very complicated secret Valentine on Valentine's Day.
This story is an extraordinary tale of friendship, betrayal, and trust, and that you feel strong emotions with both of these characters. Liam's character shows that he needs to soul search but needs the familiarity of his best friend to help him along the way.
Overall this was a great story. The author pulls you in with her writing, and you won’t want to put it down. Both characters were great. My emotions were all over the place. You can read this as a stand-alone.

This was cute. This takes place in the Fettered world. I haven't read any of those books so I knew I was missing some backstory but it didn't detract much from the book. Sometimes the hero kept referencing people by name and I had no idea who he was talking about but felt like I should. But, we get to meet a lot of those people at the end of the story.
I liked the premise of the story and Cassidy and Turcot had great chemistry and some history that's explained in the story so that made their fast relationship a bit better.
I am intrigued by the Fettered series now and will be getting those books ASAP!
