Val H. | 22140 comments It was a great game. The Dees dominated the first quarter, the Dogs the second. At half-time you would have said Bulldogs have it in the bag as does Marcus Bontompelli for best on ground. Start of the third quarter and it looked like the fight had gone out of the Demons and they were hanging their heads but a goal from youngster Bailey Fritz (who finished with 6 goals) seemed to give them heart. And the move of Luke Jackson up the field also paid dividends. Even at three-quarter time, you still felt the Bulldogs were in it. The Demons scored 16 of the the final 17 goals and that man Christian Petracca won the Norm Smith medal (best on ground).

I won't put up everyone's score (unless you want me to) but fittingly Lez takes out our final win - $15.00 for Dementia Australia. I'll be back soon to let you know the final wash-up of our charity donations.

YAYYY!!! ... Congratulations to our lovely Lez!!! ... x x x

Val H. | 22140 comments Right, I've tallied up the winnings and re-allocated the money won by Port, Carlton, Geelong and Freo. Most of the latter went to my charity because I was dismal this year! I rounded most up to a round figure and I've done a rough conversion from Aussie dollars to UK pounds.

TheFoe (Launch Housing) £60.00
Isabella (Backpack Bed For Homeless) £45.00
Suzy (Friends With Dignity) £40.00
Blastro (Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation) £32.50
Lez (Dementia Australia) £32.50 - I rounded this up to £50 in respect for Les
Tech (Oscar's Law) £30.00
David (The Song Room) £30.00
Steve (Backpack Bed For Homeless) £25.00
Philip (Canteen) £25.00
SussexWelsh (Save The Bilby Fund) £20.00
The Duke (Centre For Eye Research Australia) £20.00
Anita (The Mirabel Foundation) £20.00
Dean (Sacred Heart Mission) £17.50
Val (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre) £17.50

So together we raised £415.00 for our charities. pretty good going folks. AND - I've even made all the donations already!! which must be a record for me, getting them done only a week after the Grand Final.

Val H. | 22140 comments I would like to get your thoughts on what to do next year. Is everyone happy to carry on? Do you have any suggestions as to how it could be done better? Without Les and Isabella, we only have 12 tipsters. I'm happy to go with that. My time and money are of no consequence here. But if it's becoming irksome and/or hard to remember, please feel free to chime in as to whether it's worth going on or whether I can make it better. If people are away, busy or in ill health, I am happy to submit tips for them (I'm mean; I usually take the worst of the so-called experts in the local paper and give them. Although it did work out well for Isabella this year!) I don't mind tipping for Suzy if she's unable to make it because we all know she favours the underdog and her favourite number is 7 (and it's amazing how that system has worked well most years!). But I am open to any and all ideas to make it fun, worthwhile and fair. So fire away folks.

Craig White | 6727 comments you know me, val, ahm reet simple, so you can rely on me to participate as it is, without necessarily knowing much about the game - i'm open to any ideas any might have, but remember - you can have too much fun! :)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I'm always up for still taking part in this fantastic Thread, Val ... x x x ;o>

I honestly wasn't sure for quite a few weeks after we so very sadly lost our dear Lez how I felt about anything to do with the Forums anymore - as it just felt like such a sad and an even more emptier place to keep on with still putting up Posts at first - but I've loved seeing her still being here with us all in spirit through her Punts being carried onto the finish of this Season ... x x x

theDuke | 6491 comments I'm still game! I was wondering if participants could support more than one team? But i guess that would only work if there were 9 players, each supporting two teams, so probably not.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Am more than happy to carry on the way we are, I mean it's a fantastic thing that you do here Val and I'm sure nobody'd say otherwise. S'far as my own participation, this patch I been going through has gone on waay longer than any before and I really spend very little time online - I've not touched Facebook for yonks, not even Messenger, and neither do I visit my own Mixcloud page - but I still try to stay in touch with this community of ours on here, even if it is just once a week. Y'see being a bit of a Luddite, I refuse to have a modern phone with all the bells n whistles y'know like internet access so opening up the laptop is the only time I go online.
If things don't change then I may miss the odd week and will pull straight out if it causes any probs... but if you can accommodate this, then yes I'm all for keeping going. Will hopefully be spending much more time on here in future but can't say for certain.

message 915: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22140 comments I am more than happy to keep going as is. Two teams each might suit some but might stretch the loyalties of others. At some time the League will expand - Tasmania will have its own team and there's a possibility we could see one from either the Northern Territory of Far North Queensland, but that's a few years off.

Blastro, no way are you pulling out! I am happy to put a selection in for you if you miss a week here or there. The Bulldogs rely on your support.

What do folks feel about still putting in tips for Les as I have done this year? It could either be in the form of weekly tipping or just a straight out donation to Dementia Australia in her memory. I don't want to be disrespectful in any way.

message 916: by TheFoe (new)

TheFoe | 2637 comments You do a great job Val and I'm more than happy to carry on punting for the league winners. :-)

Not sure how I feel about the idea of tipping for Lez though. I don't think any of us will forget her, and seeing her name in print could bring up mixed emotions, happy to go with the majority in the end.

Lastly, thanks again for your generosity for this and previous seasons, it's fully appreciated.

I actually rather like the idea of still carrying our Lez onwards with us in an honorary way from now on, Val, but I can fully appreciate that it might not feel at all right or have much appeal with anyone else to want to do so - and am content to go along with whatever decision is made.

It's a sad fact that it won't ever be quite the same again for so many of us on these Threads now without her daily contributions to all of the Discussions ... but nevertheless the rest of us are all still (just about!) here, and time and this Thread will still continue to move onwards for us all, and Lez wouldn't have ever expected or wanted for it to be any other way ... x x x
