Kristie | 19123 comments We're also in a bad string of weather. We had sleet yesterday, so there is a layer of icy snow over everything today. We are expecting mostly crummy weather for at least the next week. Spring can't come soon enough for me this year either.

message 352: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments It's -21C (-5F) this morning after a week of -40 temps. I just realized how stressful that extreme cold is. Ridiculous that I'm feeling relief at -21C.

message 353: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Hopper | 2417 comments We do not have snow. What we do have is dense fog and lots of rain. Yesterday it was almost 70 F and tomorrow the high will be 41F. And...100% rain and sleet. Southern trees do not like sleet and ice.

Other than that, I am trying to get laundry done and planning my strategies for the Toppler. Hoping my tea comes today!

message 354: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments -21 is ridiculous!! And all forms of freezing rain are terrible.

It was -9 this morning where I am. I usually make my lunch for the next day and put it in the car overnight at this time of year. Natural refrigeration and then I don't forget to take it.
But I have to keep my lunch in the fridge right now so it won't freeze.

Suzanne | 15 comments I’ve been out doing shopping today, not long home. Scotland is always cold but today seems to be colder than normal! I’ve tidied up and I’m now chilled out on my bed with the candles lit and my coffee beside me while I finish my book. Oh yeah and my cat too lol. She’s always stuck to my hip!

message 356: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments That sounds lovely, Suzy.

I'm going to try to get some of my reporting and challenges caught up on while my puppy is napping. I think I'll have about an hour to work out what my plans are for the yearly challenge and some other things before she is up and rearing to go again.

message 357: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 15 comments Oh, what’s your puppies name? I understand. They never sleep for long, especially when you’re busy doing something!

Kristie | 19123 comments We named her Millie. She is a German Shepard mix. You can see a pic of her in the "our pets" folder if you want. :)

Suzanne | 15 comments Ah so cute! I’ll have a look eventually as I’m on the app right now which doesn’t do much 😂

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I am back. My eye became infected from the pecan injury, My body does not fight diseases well. I listened to some audio books.I slept a lot. But no reading.

Congrats on the new dog.
I hope everyone has dug out from the snow. I feel like i missed so much.

yikes. It makes you look at pecans another way. Glad that you are well enough to be back.

message 362: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Thanks, Renee. So sorry that your eye became infected. Darned pecan!

message 363: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments Wow you guys! Those temps and snows are crazy! I am in Utah and we are basically not having a winter - it is weird. I am from San Diego, CA and so I don't really like cold and snow anyway - but it is still weird how warm and not snowy it has been this year. And because I married a farmer, now I worry about weather patterns.

message 364: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments After the cold spell, temperatures are back to normal and the snow and ice has largely melted. The next extreme is coming up though.. in the weekend temperatures of 18 and 19C are expected, which is normal for April or May, not February.. It's a 30C difference in a week!

message 365: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4524 comments Ok, I am so done with this weather! Today was nice, in the 40's F, so I was able to take a nice long walk. Tomorrow will be okay too. But Thursday, the snow starts over again. 5 - 10 inches expected. It started with about 15 inches about a 10 days ago, then there was more, then more again. And it's been cold. I'm definitely done. We've been planning to move to Austin Texas for a year now (covid intruded on that) to be closer to my son/daughter-in-law/grandson. Then it snowed where they are. I texted him - what's that? Snow? Crazy. I can just shake my head.

message 366: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments It is unbelievable the weather they are having in Texas. It seems that it won't get better any time soon.

We had freezing rain again during the night and everything was covered with ice this morning. Life was cancelled again because of this reason. Third time this winter. I had saw it three times in 10 years living here, and now three time in one winter, and we still have more than a month to go.

message 367: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments The weather has been awful. Our weather was supposed to be better by this weekend. Now, they're saying we'll likely get another ice storm Thursday and the nice weather has been pushed back until Tuesday. I'm ready for some warmth and sunshine!

message 368: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments There is nothing worse than freezing rain!

message 369: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments Ugh. Ice storms and freezing rain. And all that snow. Sending warmth and sunshine from sunny Queensland. Although we are having a tropical downpour at the moment.

message 370: by Abby (new)

Abby | 270 comments I wonder how many bad things happen right after someone thinks 'You know, I'm just going to do this one thing and then I'll go back to sleep.'

Julius Caesar: I'm just going to go to this meeting and then I'm going back to sleep.

King George III: I'm just going to put down this revolution in the colonies and then I'm going back to sleep.

I'm sure that's how that goes. So anyway, two days ago, I notice that one of our chickens is acting lethargic. We take her inside and make a home for her out of a cardboard box and put her in the kitchen.

Yesterday my dad wakes me up to go do my chicken chores. I was irresponsible that night and had stayed up way to late so I think to myself, 'I'm just going to go do my chicken chores and then I'll go back to bed.' I put on my coat and shoes and I'm about to go outside when I look back at the box we put the chicken in.

Apparently, we didn't just bring in a chicken two days ago. A couple of tiny friends had hitched a ride. And by 'a couple of tiny friends' I mean about ten billion mites.

I come to you after spraying poison, putting down diatomaceous earth where the box was, and a night of thinking I felt things crawling on me. On the bright side, at least now we know what a mite infested chicken looks like. if anyone knows how to made a good diatomaceous earth scrub, I wouldn't say no to the recipe.

message 371: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Hopper | 2417 comments Oh my! I cant even imagine! Yikes!

message 372: by Abby (new)

Abby | 270 comments It was rather surprising. 😂

message 373: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Poor chicken!

message 374: by Abby (new)

Abby | 270 comments She ended up not making it but we sprayed the coop and the other chickens with mite poison (it was the same stuff you would put on your head if you got lice so it doesn’t hurt the chickens at all) and diatomaceous earth which is ground up river rocks that rip through small bugs like paper but doesn’t hurt anything bigger than a spider. It looks like gray corn starch and feels like really soft flour. I’m still not sure how it works. The rest of our chickens will be fine. My mom was looking at how they might have gotten there since we’ve never had trouble in the past and apparently songbirds are huge carriers. But they don’t get infested and chickens do because chickens are so much bigger.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Naww poor little bocker! I'm sorry you lost your girl :(

Do you have mite powder? That's the main thing we use to keep mites under control. I'll find the brand and active ingredient when it's not past midnight, but I sprinkle it through the coop and run every time I change the paper. They fluff it through their feathers that way. Not perfect but helps.

Also we were talking to a lady who helped with our sick chicken last year who recommended Predator Mites. Not a sci fi movie, but mites that eat other mites, but leave the chickens alone. Apparently you can buy them and they ship them to you in cases ready to be released. As Australia has incredibly strict biosecurity laws, I can guarantee if we have them here, you will have them any where else in the world (okay, maybe not NZ). Remember we threatened to put down Johnny Depp's dogs as he was an entitled rich prick and thought biosecurity laws were optional for the famous. Only thing I have ever agreed with our then Deputy PM about.

Thanks for the advice! Our chickens are looking good today, none of them are acting like the first one so that's good.

message 381: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Apologies for the radio silence. I've had a difficult couple of months. I was having some relationship problems which culminated in a break up and me moving out. We were together 16 years so it feels like my life has been turned upside down. But life is becoming a bit more stable now. I put an offer in on a new boat which was accepted. I just have to wait for a survey to be done on it and if everything is ok, it will be mine. So fingers crossed. Now my brain is not so mushy, I hope I can be back on here much more and start reading again. I've been listening to audible at night in bed to help me get off to sleep which has been amazing and I've read a few self help books to help me through things but miss getting lost in fictional worlds.

message 382: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad time these las months, Sarah. I hope everything goes well with the survey and the boat is yours soon. Having your own place again will give you something happy to focus and work on.
I'm also glad to hear you got your shot! That is a relief.

So sorry Sarah, It takes a while to get your bearings back and adjust to a new life. Great that you found a boat.

Jenn | 3029 comments I’m so sorry Sarah 😞 Regardless of whether the change is good or bad, or who’s idea, change is usually hard and always requires a period of adjustment - especially when there is that much time invested 😞 I hope your new boat comes through, and gives you an awesome new foundation 🥰

message 393: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments I am sorry to hear that Sarah - but I am glad you found a boat! I often listen to self-help type books as I go to sleep. I feel like even if I fall asleep and don't remember everything - the message still gets into my brain anyway. I really like Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life With the Heart of a Buddha to listen to at bedtime.

message 394: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments I know I'm tired, but I need to share this. I was curious about Katrisa's suggested book and wanted to see if my library had a copy. Their search tool popped up and asked, "What can we help you find?" I responded with, "Radical Acceptance." Then, I laughed out loud thinking thank goodness it's automated and not an actual person or that could sound interesting. lol Ok, I'll get some sleep now...

I often have to go back and relisten to bits. The sleeep timer has been good. I just finisshed Tara Brach's other book Radical Compassion: Learning to Love Yourself and Your World with the Practice of RAIN she has a soothing voice to help you sleep and it's a greaat book.

message 399: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Thanks everyone, much appreciated. I think i'm through the worst of it. Perhaps. The new boat will give me something to focus on and keep me busy with getting it how i like it.
