Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments That is about the info I read this morning, yes.

I agree about the security inside doing their best. Totally agree. My comment about the wrong message is more general. I hate people thinking they can do this because nothing will happen. Which brings us to your last point. Why it seems nobody is being arrested today? I really hope things do not stay like this. This can't happen. Period. And it should be a priority to make this clear to everyone.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Oh yes. This episode shows white privilege at its best. Nobody can deny it.

message 103: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments I'm off to bed. Glad our accounts are correlating. Good to know info is getting in and out of the States.

I'm hoping I wake to a mass level of arrests, as I agree. It can't happen in a democracy with reasonably fair elections (understand some mistakes and human error happens).

If you have a democracy, you can't raid the halls of government if you don't agree. Protest is legitimate and encouraged! But not this. This was intimidation and incitement by a certain part of society.

... I wrote something else and it sounded like a bad 90s pop song... so I will leave that to your imagination. Stay safe everyone. Jeez...

Oh, and Lexx just got peed on by a brush-tailed possum. YAY 2021!!

Good night.

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments It was pretty shocking to see unfold, but it was no secret that it was going to happen. It was being planned right out in the open on social media. It surprises me that law enforcement was unprepared for it.

I echo Rusulka's concerns for our YLTO American family. Stay close to home and be safe.

Kristie | 19123 comments Sandra wrote: "... The woman shot inside died, and there were other 3 deaths outside, although not much information was given so far about who they are."

The only thing I read about the other three is that one had a heart attack and one tased themself. *facepalm* Not the brightest group of insurgents.

Yes, Rus. A cooler is an esky. :)

I also think there should be more arrests made. They know who many of the people are due to all the cameras. The guy in Pelosi's office also left a note stating that they will not stop. To me, that is a threat and should be treated as such.

I can't believe this is what it took for members of congress to finally turn away from Trump. They waited until this ridiculous coup turned violent to say that they didn't want to be a part of it. So frustrating. They should have shut this down a long time ago. Yet, some of them still played along with his lies and continued to challenge the electoral college votes. This is what they will be remembered for in the history books. Nothing they did before will matter. Now there is talk of invoking the 25th amendment, which won't happen.

Shirley | 1505 comments I also add my support for the YLTO Americans. How horrifying to see the country you love becoming so unsettled and divided. We are all watching the news with disbelief. I don’t envy Biden his job in getting things under control. Trump doesn’t seem like a man who can let go. Is the 25th a way of sacking the president? Or charging him with a crime? How does it work?

The 25th removes him from office by stating that he is unfit and unable to carry out his duties as president. The vice president would take over until the end of his term.

Impeachment means he's being removed for committing a crime.

The process is different for each. The 25th would require Pence to be onboard, impeachment doesn't.

A MAGA man tazered his own ballsack and died of a heart attack while trying to steal a painting from the Capitol.

I offer this with no comment...

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Someone on our ABC (our government funded broadcaster) here was explaining the 25th amendment. And the thing that made me laugh was that this was an amendment obviously written before the computer age. Pence needs to write a letter stating he and half the Cabinet think Trump is unfit. Trump then has 4 days to write a letter of appeal. Pence then has X days to write a letter of reply...

I'm yelling at the screen "WRITE AN EMAIL" and Lexx thinks I've lost the plot.

The thing that was the most important though is after Pence writes the first letter, he is acting President. I mean, I never thought that a incredibly conservative man who is against just about every social value I stand for is the best option for me personally, but it's 11 days and I am all for it.

Kristie | 19123 comments I agree with your standing, Rus. I don't think Pence will be onboard with the 25th amendment though. Honestly, I can't really blame him. Trump has less than two weeks left and after looking at the way the Trump supporters have been acting, he'd have to worry about being killed. It's sad, but Trump definitely has some crazy loyalists. That is why they are considering impeachment. I think the ultimate goal is to prevent him for running for office again.

Do you think any of the goal is to stop him from pardoning all those explicit in this insurrection? I saw a list of people he plans on pardoning on Jan 19th. Certainly Pence could carry out those pardons if Trump is removed. Personally, I think there needs to be consequences for what went down.

message 123: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments That would be a benefit of using the 25th amendment. Trump would be removed immediately and not able to pardon everyone under the sun. I didn't see the list you're referring to, but I don't think if Trump was removed from office Pence would pardon all those people. Trump is giving out pardons like Halloween candy. He is not using pardons the way they were intended and I don't think Pence would necessarily follow suit to pardon all of Trump's loyalists. He might, however, pardon Trump. There is talk that Trump will step down on the 19th so that Pence will become temporary president and pardon him. I also think there needs to be consequences.

message 124: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I don't know how real the list is, or it was someone's wishful thinking. But it made me think about pardons and how much damage they can do.

message 125: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments There was real discussion here about the fact that Trump could, technically, pardon himself and has been meeting lawyers regarding this. The problem is no one is sure how on earth this would work, as no president before has had the ego to even think about doing it.

I've seen talk of that too. I don't know how that would work either. I do think it's strange to pardon yourself if you haven't committed any crimes...

message 127: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Just to be safe, you know. All the crimes I possibly did before and during my presidency, but nothing was intentional and all things would have been little. But just in case, blanket pardon for the past 75 years of my life.

And just to be safe as we all know that the left and the fake news and the ... whatever else he bangs on about... will spin things and make him a scapegoat or something.

Nothing dodgy about it at all.

I a worried what will happen on inauguration day. I have read their are concerns that their will be marches on the state capitals

Kristie | 19123 comments I’ve read that too, Renee. Hopefully, they are peaceful protests, but I’m not convinced they all will be. In those cases, I hope the police/ national guards are prepared.

message 136: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Good luck with your vaccine, Renee! I just heard from my aunt and uncle in Portsmouth in the UK. They are both in their 80s and both have other health issues. They were very excited as they just got their first dose.

message 137: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments Glad to hear it, Rusalka! Such a relief.

The US has decided to give the second doses now instead of withholding. Some states are changing their schedules a bit so that more people can get the vaccine. Apparently, they were throwing some out because they would take it out of the freezers, then not have enough people to vaccinate. I read that NY is allowing anyone over the ages 65 to get it now.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Kristie wrote: "Apparently, they were throwing some out because they would take it out of the freezers, then not have enough people to vaccinate."

Can I just state as a person in a country that has delayed it's own vaccination schedule to allow places in crisis like the US, the UK, Europe, and parts of South America... Given PREFERENCE to these countries over ourselves as the situation is so out of control...

The fact we have health workers, and people working in quarantine hotels not getting vaccinations so they can go to the US. And then when one cleaner in a quarantine hotel who cannot get vaccinated due to us being good global citizens causes a city of 2.5 MILLION people to be shutdown for 3 days (including Shirley)...

The fact that my partner is 60%+ more likely to die from complications from this disease but cannot get vaccinated, as we think that the death rate in the US is completely and utterly preventable and ridiculous and we are literally sacrificing ourselves for your people.

AND YOU ARE THROWING IT OUT!!

I know, I know this is the wrong thread. And it's nothing at all about you guys, this is not anyone personally but a systematic failure of a machine of government.
But this is the angriest I have been in this whole pandemic. HOW. FRICKING. DARE. YOU.

... I just cannot. I mean... How on earth could you be someone who puts that in the bin and knows that there is literally 7 345 800 000 other people in the world outside your country literally gagging at the bit trying to get their hands on that vial you tossed...

message 139: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Also though. Hug any healthcare worker you know. They know these stats better than all of us and dealing with the issues of this disease. It must be so incredibly hard for them with this extra knowledge and some times, responsibilities.

message 140: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments I completely agree. My understanding is that there are several doses in a vial and the vaccine expires six hours after being taken out of cold storage. So, if they have taken it out and it doesn't get used right away it goes bad. States are opening up who can receive the doses in an effort to remedy the situation.

I know one hospital had a freezer break down and they had something like 800 doses they had to give out and they were searching for people to give it to. In that situation, I get it, it was out of their control and at least they tried use it all. I don't know if they were successful. I will need to look into that.

I know so many people that want to get vaccinated, but it isn't available to them yet. I also know some people that want it and qualify, but can't get an appointment.

I think they need to add people who want it and can't get an appointment to a call list, so if someone doesn't show up for their appointment they still have someone to give it to. I'm sure there are people that would add their name to the list in order to get it sooner.

Oh yeah, this needs to be a thing.

Sorry for that outburst last night :( I was so angry that this precious thing was being tossed. I hadn't heard that yet, and it blindsided me.

message 142: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I've heard of the same thing here, doses having to be disposed of due to people not attending their appointments. So they've opened up the criteria and created a cancellation list so hopefully none of that ridiculousness will be happening again. I would happily have had one of those doses that were thrown away.

Last weekend, I started getting Hello Fresh. Quite a few of my friends have been getting it in the last month too. I thought it would save us time in the supermarkets so less covid exposure. I've really enjoyed it. On Tuesday evening, my friend and I set up a zoom call where we cooked the same hello fresh meal together and had a dinner party afterwards. It was a lot of fun. I think we're going to make it a regular thing during lockdown.

message 143: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments No worries, Rusalka. I was pretty shocked when I first saw it too. I, like Sarah, would have happily taken one of the doses, but I have to wait for the last group to get it. Hopefully, other countries learn from our mistakes and have cancellation lists and a better rollout.

That sounds so fun, Sarah. What a great way have a creative dinner party.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments That's a great idea with Hello Fresh and friends! I hadn't thought of that option, it's brilliant!

We got our veggie box delivered today. It's a massive box of veggies that are locally grown and organic and odd shapes like you would dig up. I marked it NO POTATOES PLEASE (I love potatoes, but not great for the T1 Diabetic in the house and we are starting keto again on Monday) and in the box I have 3kgs of potatoes to eat in 3 days...

message 145: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments Don't worry about the rant, Rusalka. Yo are right. It seems that everything that could be done the wrong way, it had. This could be the slogan for this pandemic.

message 146: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments A couple of my friends have tried Hello Fresh and really liked it. I considered it, but I thought that it might be too expensive in the long run, and it would be more food than a single person could deal with. On the plus side, it might have me cooking and eating better. I tend to gravitate towards the same thing and food is getting boring.

message 147: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I have Hello Fresh since May. I was getting uninspired about dinner, always falling back on the same dishes. I really like it. We get a box every 2-3 weeks now, and there are several recipes that we now make regularly.

I love the idea of doing it with a friend through zoom!

message 148: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Janice, I have a friend who gets one of these meal kits and she lives alone.
She gets the 2 person option for 3 days a week. Then she has 3 dinners and the leftovers for 3 lunches.
I am not sure about the expense but she loves the variety and not having to decide what dinner is going to be for 3 days a week. And also not going to the store for recipe ingredients and then letting half of them go to waste.

She has the option to pause the orders if she doesn't want them that week too. So if you aren't in the mood to cook.....

message 149: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19123 comments I used to get a box delivered, but stopped after a while. It was not Hello Fresh, but a different service. I found it to be expensive and I just didn't love it. I've considered trying Hello Fresh, but haven't done it. I'm changing my eating habits right now, so I have plenty of new recipes to try out.

I am currently on a Keto-Atkins type diet. 2020 seems to have leaked into my 2021 and the doctor ordered some changes. Any tips would be appreciated, Rusalka.

message 150: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I lost 20 lbs last year and now 5 lbs has creeped back up. I need to get away from the boring food I'm eating. I've tried keto and got quite sick on it. My sister said that she thinks I was too strict on it and ended up with ketoacidosis, which is high levels of acid in the blood.

It's such a vicious cycle and so discouraging. I need something that is sustainable instead of this constant fluctuating.
