Happy New Year YLTO-ers!!

Hope you have had a lovely new years no matter whether out or at home. And if you are waking up, I hope your head is feeling reasonable.

It's a lovely cool, overcast day here in the National Capital here in Aus, which I think is a considerate start to the year. Nothing worse than a hangover in 40C, so I feel 2021 is starting off nicely.

I "crossed over" reading 2 awesome books so I would say at the very least that my reading year is off with a good start. As Saar says, happiness in small things. :)

I haven't been reading, I didn't even finish the 2 books I'm currently reading. Now work is less stressful at the moment I've been playing games on my switch.

Pantone is such a Christmas working in the bakery thing while we were in uni and Lexx's sister owned the best bakery in town. I'm sorry you are feeling all those nostalgic emotions while you can't go home. Thinking about you :(

But enjoy the Pantone in the meantime for me...

A very strange new year here. Has to be the first time ever that no pubs were open in the UK to see in the new year.

We had a drink and finished watching a series we've been binge watching. Today we went for a wintery walk with our boat neighbours. We had a light dusting of snow and a hard frost this morning and it's the 3rd day in a row that the canal has been frozen so it was all very beautiful. The pub on our route whilst not open to customers as such was doing takeaways so we got a spiced rum and ginger ale each to drink on our way home. Very surreal as they weren't allowed to do takeaway pre covid. Now about to watch 'Death to 2020' which is by the creators of Black Mirror.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Happy new year!!

We spent the evening making mini pizzas and playing board games with 2 friends. It was fun! We've done this the past 2 years as well (with a second couple and without dinner) and for some reason new year's board games always make time fly. It always happens that someone looks at their watch and says 'huh?! 4 am? How did that happen??' It was only 3 am last night so quite early ;-)

I don't cope well with going to bed that late, so today is just hanging around the house and not doing much. I even feel too tired to read! We did go for a walk though, that was good. Much easier to stay awake in a chilly 2C than on a couch in a 19C living room.

Well, that is nice. At this time last year Australia was already on fire, wasn't it? I guess we can say 2021 has disappointed less so far.

I have a friend in Uruguay who also owns a bakery. Best kind of friend you can have :)
My sister in law gave us a recipe we plan to try. She even made many videos showing us how to do it and with many tips. We couldn't do them yet because we couldn't find candied fruit (don't know how to call them in Australia) in any store here. We had to order them on line and they did not come on time. But we love panettone and the only reason we eat it during this season is because they only sell it now! But if we can make it, why not eating it in August?
The one we have for breakfast was a boxed one, by Bauducco. Not bad, but I with they had at least 1/3 of the fruit they show on the box picture...

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Must be the age Sandra. But I do wonder how it's possible that I have to recover for 2 days from this, while my parents who are 30 years older than me, came home even later than I did, and drank several times more alcohol than I did, were as energetic as ever. They don't seem to suffer at all!

message 25: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11257 comments That is fun. Maybe they are better rested to start with?

I was joking with some friends the other day about getting drunk at this age. I was saying that I can't even remember when was the last time I got drunk. I just can't get drunk. I fall sleep before I can drink enough.

message 26: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same! I can get to feeling a little more relaxed or tipsy, but I have never been drunk in my life. I think for me it also has to do with not wanting to lose control.

Indeed! It had been on fire since Sept, but end of November is when the MASSIVE issues started, and the smoke had set in. We left Lexx's brother's place on the 30th, and we were thinking as we were driving out that it was the 31st Dec last year when the fire came down their street. The mountain road back up to Canberra had been closed for 5 weeks by that stage, as everything was burning. We're very much enjoying the 20Cish days at the moment in comparison, although I just got an alert that fires have started outside of Perth on the West Coast.

I was looking at one of those articles with photos of the most important events in 2020, and it started with the photos of the fires in Australia. I couldn't believe it was only a year ago. It feels like 3 years ago. The pandemic and confinement have messed up my sense of time. :/

He and I are never at a loss for something to talk about. We have the same love for reading and the same taste in books. I had to laugh at him the other day. He's anxious for me to finish The Realm of the Elderlings series so we can discuss it. I told him that our buddy read group is starting the first book in Feb and then every other month, so it will be 6 months before it's done. He said, "Ditch your buddies and just read the books, Grams!" LOL! I told him I wouldn't do that.

Seriously though, he was my rock this summer when I had to go to Edmonton for tests and surgery. I'm so grateful that I have a grandson who is caring and giving of himself.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Hope it wasn't too hard, Anna. Glad you had a decent break though.

We had friends over on Sunday for the first time since February, which meant we had to pack down the 6 computer screens, desktop tower, and laptop from the dining room table for the first time since March. It is AMAZING. We have so much room now! We ran a 6 hour D&D campaign on it (again first in person since January) and there was room for maps and drinks and notebooks and food. It was glorious. Who knew tables could hold so much stuff!!

We're back at work next week, and Lexx is still working at home due to being vulnerable, and the fact there are two small outbreaks in the country at the moment but Christmas makes it more likely for people to have traveled around the country, so it will need to be set up again on Monday. But at the moment we are both reveling in this table that we paid no attention to for the past 10 years.

The chickens are very confused why they are not allowed on it anymore now it's a dining table. When it was a work table, they could sneak on and distract us in Zoom meetings. Humans are very inconsistent.

I just looked at my watch and it's 7:53 am. I groaned. No more lollygagging and reading threads all morning. I have to get back to work too. I work from home, so it's just a matter of heading downstairs to my work computer. But still... I enjoyed my time off.

Did you say 6 hour D&D campaign? 6 hours? EPIC! I haven't played D&D in forever! One of my characters, Esmerelda (who happens to be my first and favorite) has the best rolls. 12, 13, 15, 16, 16, 17.

They are amazing! What class is Esmerelda?

Yeah, it was the "end of Series 1" session of our campaign, so we were fighting the big bad. The kids' mum's were very obliging and took them for the afternoon/evening for our friends so we could do one long epic session. Usually we play for 2-3 hours, so it was just lovely to hang out with our old housemates for a prolonged period.

My character, Daruwyn the tempest cleric, was tanking a couple of secondary mobs from the group, and epically turned while holding them off and blasted the Beholder who was ripping through the rest of the group with her Call Lightning spell and turned it into a Jacob's Ladder. The mini is now on my bookshelf as a trophy lol. Hate Beholders.
