@Cherie & Katrisa: The books are standalone and you don't have to read them all to understand and enjoy One Hundred years of Solitude, but they are all set in Macondo and main characters of one appear as secondary in others, or at least mentioned. In Leaf Storm Coronel Aureliano Buendia is mentioned and it is an important part of how things come to happen. Also the "leaf storm is a metaphor for what is left (as in waste, destruction, not only but including human) after the civil war and also the international banana plantations owners leaving the area, which are important topics in OHYoS too. That is why I say they are connected, but you do not have to read them all.
There was an explosion in our street yesterday evening. There was a huge bang around 7pm, and I was still shaking half an hour later. The whole neighbourhood was out on the street wondering what happened. We have some small flower pots on the window sill and they all moved 3 cm from the window and one even fell on the ground because of the pressure. In the house of the explosion nobody was seriously injured luckily (the man was taken to hospital for a head wound, the woman because she was completely in shock) but there's a lot of damage. The house next to them lost some windows and rooftiles.
I just watched time fly! I have never actually watch the clock change over to daylight savings time. I was watching the second hand on the analog clock display on my iPod, and as the second hand approached 2:00am, the little hand immediately jumped to 3 and the time displayed 3:00am.
Peggy wrote: "There was an explosion in our street yesterday evening. There was a huge bang around 7pm, and I was still shaking half an hour later. The whole neighbourhood was out on the street wondering what ha..."Oh jeez. Sorry to hear Peggy, hope your nerves have settled now. How terrifying!!
I really hope the people who's house it was are okay. Any idea what they think it was? Gas?
Sandra wrote: "Cherie, I hate time.changes! In November is ok, but in March is not. :/"Lies. April is the best, and October sucks! :P
I actually really appreciate daylight savings, so will put up with the October pain for the benefit.
I'm confused! Hemisphere-wise I should be on Sandra's side, but I'm agreeing with Rusalka. What I know is that he was working with gasoline, it ended up in the sewer, he tried to blow it through with an electrical appliance that I don't know the name of, and then it went boom.
Oh. You're confused as Rusalka is an idiot. And wishful thinking that in 3 weeks she gets more sleep.No. October is great. April sucks.
I'm just thinking that everything magical happens on the Easter weekend. We can eat carbs again, it's a 4 day weekend, and it's Lexx's birthday. So an hour free sleep seems to fit. But I can deal with loosing an hour that weekend.
Peggy wrote: "What I know is that he was working with gasoline, it ended up in the sewer, he tried to blow it through with an electrical appliance that I don't know the name of, and then it went boom."Oh god no! Electrical appliances with elements and petrol is ridiculous. I am glad they are okay, and that there wasn't a lot more damage to your street. Jeez.
Oh yikes, Peggy! Glad everyone was ok. That guy is lucky he didn't get himself or someone else killed. How scary. I hope your nerves have calmed.I hate the daylight savings change. I wish they'd just leave it. It makes no sense to keep changing the clocks anymore. All it does is cause an uptick in accidents because everyone is so tired.
Why anymore? Tech has changed a lot but hasn't been able to change the sun. Nah, those extra hours of daylight here at a normal time at 7pm instead of 4am are wonderful. And I don't believe there is an increase of accidents at all here. Cows are also fine before they are mentioned. I am more than happy to disagree on this one, but firm daylight savings believer here.
Example: Nothing like sitting on a deck with friends and/or family at 8pm at night with food and a drink and the weather being lovely watching the sunset. Socially unacceptable to do that at 4am.
Glad your family escaped the flooding Janice.Your evening sounded eventful Peggy!
I like daylight savings in the Spring as it marks a step closer to better weather. I like light evenings too. Definitly not so keen on the change in October though.
Rusalka wrote: "Oh. You're confused as Rusalka is an idiot. And wishful thinking that in 3 weeks she gets more sleep.No. October is great. April sucks."
Lol. Ok, now it makes sense. I enjoy the extra hours of light, for sure. What I hate is specifically the day we change in March. I dislike waking up on a Sunday (like today) and seeing that is already "so late". Like someone stole my morning. The kids will be hard to put to bed an hour earlier today and wake up an hour earlier tomorrow. But it is true that it is an annoyance that only lasts a few days until we get used to and then we have the whole spring and summer to enjoy it.
Peggy wrote: "What I know is that he was working with gasoline, it ended up in the sewer, he tried to blow it through with an electrical appliance that I don't know the name of, and then it went boom."Oh, dear. It could have been so much worse. I'm glad at the end it was just a scary moment.
Rusalka wrote: "Why anymore? Tech has changed a lot but hasn't been able to change the sun. Nah, those extra hours of daylight here at a normal time at 7pm instead of 4am are wonderful. More accidents: https://www.healthline.com/health-new...And health issues: https://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst/...
I will admit that I was thrilled that our new puppy, who normally gets up at about 6:30, slept until 7:30 this morning. :) She fortunately, can not read the clock and got up with her usual sun timing.
That explosion must have been a shock, Peggy. Your neighbor is lucky he didn't kill himself or anyone else. As soon as the gas went into the sewer, he should have called the fire department for help.I think daylight saving time really depends on where you live and what you do for a living. Here, with dst, it doesn't start getting dark until close to midnight, and then it's not really dark. You could sit out on your deck till 1:00 am and not be inconvenienced by the lack of light. The mosquitos, on the other hand, would be a big inconvenience.
They are talking about staying on permanent dst here and I'm strongly opposed to that. In the winter, it would stay dark until after 10:00 in the morning and then it would be dark at 5:00 in the afternoon.
In my opinion, those who work a 9-5 type of job are the ones who would benefit from it the most. People on shift work wouldn't have the same benefit. Farmers continue to work their schedule regardless because - cows! LOL! If they are harvesting, they're in the fields way past sundown any way.
I saw footage of the explosion today, filmed with a security camera of a neighbour. It was even bigger than I thought. The entire garage explodes and there's a short burst of fire, and then the debris falling down. When we reached our window we still saw dust coming down. I can't believe the guy had only a head wound. He could so easily have been crushed. We start daylight savings in 2 weeks. I love it, I love the longer days! All of a sudden it will be light until 8 instead of 7! And those long Summer evenings.. also I don't feel any effects of that 1 hour difference myself.
There's discussion every time about whether we should stick to one time. Despite my love of summer time, if we had one, I would go for winter time. It means an hour less light in the evenings in summer, but if we stick to summer time it will be dark until 10 in the morning in winter, which would be awful..
I can completely see your point, Janice. I think there is far too few hours of daylight in winter to begin with. I remember driving to work in the dark, then driving home also in the dark. It stinks. I don't really have a preference. I just don't want to have to change the clocks all the time. I'm all for picking, whichever, and it is what it is. Or even split the difference, just fall back half an hour and leave it at that. Although, I think that would probably feel weird initially. lolPeggy, I love the longer summer days too. I can't wait for them to get longer and I'm happy that we're heading in that direction now. I don't really have a problem with the time change myself, aside from being a little more tired on the Sunday, which I'm sure I could remedy by going to bed a little earlier the night before, which I never do. I do know people that feel it for a full week though and I find the research interesting.
That explosion is crazy. Shocking that he wasn't hurt worse. When you first mentioned it, it made me think of how people must feel in war areas with bombs going off. I can't imagine how that would affect your nerves.
It was really nice out today and Craig and I took all the dogs out for a long walk in one of our state parks. I've decided to do some virtual 5Ks to motivate me to walk more. It's really neat. You plug in your time online and they send you out a medal. I'm also doing a longer distance walk where you post your distance every day and they take you along different places in different countries. They give you a street view of where you would be on the trail as you go. It's pretty interesting and I'll be "walking" places I would probably never be able to actually walk in real life. I'm in Peru right now, but I'm already looking forward to doing one in Australia. I walk the dogs most days (as long as the weather cooperates), but this gives me a reason to go a bit further. Today was the perfect day for it.
Rusalka wrote: "Why anymore? Tech has changed a lot but hasn't been able to change the sun. Nah, those extra hours of daylight here at a normal time at 7pm instead of 4am are wonderful. And I don't believe there i..."Ok now I really want to mention cows. And faded curtains from too much sunlight. 😂
Just for our overseas friends, here in sunny Queensland, we don’t have DS, so none of those problems here ... just sunshine all the time, well not in the middle of the night obviously but you know what I mean. We don’t even care about the (friendly?) jibes we get from southerners about turning the clock back to enter Queensland. Rusalka you know what I’m talking about🙂?
That walking thing sounds really cool Kristie! I looked into something similar once, but it was very expensive to join. Which website or app are you using?
Peggy wrote: "That walking thing sounds really cool Kristie! I looked into something similar once, but it was very expensive to join. Which website or app are you using?"I've used several different sites. Some of them are associated with charities, which I really like. I just found this site, Virtual Strides, and all of their runs/walks support a different charity so you can go through and select which one you'd like to support. I haven't used them yet, but I'll do that next.
I've signed up for the Bee Kind 5K/10K (though I Run 4 Movement), which supports Feeding America. I have also signed up for Run For the Rescues(through Flex it Pink), which supports the Have a Heart Humane Society.
I've joined a few through [link removed]. They are less expensive, but don't support causes. (Edit: I ended up going through a hassle to cancel all of these as they didn't send them to me and wouldn't respond to email messages. I deleted the link because I don't want to promote this company or have someone click the link and run into the same problems I did.)
And I just found yes.fit, which has longer walks/runs to support different places. I like that they have walks for elephants, sea turtles, and manatees. I'll probably look into one of those too.
This is the one with the really long walks around the world that you keep track of: The Conqueror Virtual Challenges. I like it a lot. I just plug in how far I walk each each day with the pups, including the 5Ks, and slowly make progress along my path.
Thanks a lot Kristie! I'm going to look into those. I especially like the one that makes you travel.
I am currently doing the Inca Trail one, which is pretty short. I think it's probably a better value for your money if you choose a longer one, but I wanted to see how I'd do with it first. I think I'm going to finish it a lot sooner than I expected. I might do the Great Ocean Road one next.
Kristie wrote: "I do know people that feel it for a full week though and I find the research interesting...."I am jealous of anyone who only feels the effects for a day or a week with the time changes. I do get over the worst of it in a week but the effects linger for several weeks. I do not adjust to the change in routine very well.
Oh, that's rough, Dawn. You must feel like you've just gotten settled when they go and switch it again.
I am one of the most enthusiastic proponents of abolishing the time change! :)It's kinda like jetlag. But without the fun vacation part.
And those walking tours always show up in my FB feeds, I am tempted by the Iceland one https://www.theconqueror.events/ringr...
Sandra wrote: "That's bad, Dawn. Do you also feel bad when jet lagged?"Yep, really bad for a day and then I power though the rest of it. Because it's a vacation after all and I am there to have fun.
But it sucks when I get home.

It sounds like a lot of fun, but I thought paying €30 just to see some photos when I have been for a walk was a bit overpriced. I know there are more options on the website, but I wouldn't use them. I just though it would be cool to virtually walk the distance I walk here :)

I'm sorry to hear that. My husband also suffers a lot with jet lag.
The first 3 times I traveled far enough to be in a complete different time zone, I didn't really fell it that bad. I get so tired during plane trips, since I can't sleep in planes at all, that when I arrived I was exhausted, fell sleep right away, kind of reset myself while sleeping and woke up good enough. I won't say there wasn't something slightly odd the first days, but nothing bad.
Then we moved to France for a year with all the kids. Seven jet lagged kids it's something I do not wish for anyone. During the first three nights there was always one of them awake. Always. Then they just started to get used to it, and that was it. But at that point my brain was completely lost. It didn't know when was day, when was night, where it was. It took me 3 weeks to feel normal again and it was hard. I won't say anxiety and stress didn't play a part (it wasn't vacations after all) but I certainly understood then people who suffer from suffer jet lag, including my husband.
Everyone did better when we came back, though. I am not sure why.

Kristie - I joined Yes.Fit last August and I love it. I started off doing their charity races. Now I'm focusing on their theme races. I am currently working on the national park series. It helped me to stay motivated to walk and exercise during quarantine. And I lost 20 lbs. :)
Margo wrote: "Haha, we will keep the brandy - might lead to dropped stitches! G"I am done and I qualified to be in the compétition. Bring that brady over!

Sandra wrote: "Then we moved to France for a year with all the kids. Seven jet lagged kids it's something I do not wish for anyone...."Wow, that must have been insane. You must have felt like you were going insane with all the lack of sleep....
I can't sleep on a plane either, and when I was younger, I would do the same as you. Fall asleep and be magically reset. But apparently when I got to around 38 that no longer worked. It all catches up to me when we get home and I am a terribly cranky person for at least a week. :)
Dawn wrote: "And those walking tours always show up in my FB feeds, I am tempted by the Iceland one https://www.theconqueror.events/ringr..."And they'll start showing up on mine because I've clicked on the links.
Yesterday I posted on Facebook about an ad that keeps popping up in my feed. Last week, my friend texted me and asked for the name of a hotel I stayed at a few years back. Now, that hotel's ads are popping up in my FB feed.
I've been googling a new coffee machine and all of a sudden there are adds about coffee bean subscriptions everywhere.
Yes. It feels weird, knowing that it's all so connected and that if you look for something in one place, it pops up in so many other places.
Dawn, the Iceland one is nice too. It's hard to choose. Peggy, I agree. I also think it's a bit pricey, but I figure it's something I'm doing for myself and since I'm not going anywhere spending money I've rationalized that it's ok. lol
Jayme, congrats! That's excellent. I lost 18 pounds recently, but I put most of it on during quarantine, so it's really just leveling out. lol I'm interested in doing the animal charity ones - dolphins, sea turtles, elephants, and manatees. I have quite a few that I've already signed up for recently though, so I need to do some of those first.
Congrats on your qualification, Esther! I saw your socks in the what you've made thread and they're very nice.
Dawn, I can't sleep on a plane either. I'm a pretty light sleeper in general and all sorts of noises, lights, smells will wake me up. Oddly enough, I've been sleeping on the couch with the new puppy a lot recently and sleeping much better than I expected too. Maybe I'll become a better sleeper as I get older?
Janice, it always seems just a little creepy to me when ads pop up like that. It certainly diminishes any false sense of privacy you might have.
Peggy, just a thought - the yes.fit walks for the animals are longer and I think they have street view things too. They are less expensive and support charities. I haven't looked into the details yet, but it might be worth checking out.
The ones I find the creepiest, are the ones I haven't googled. I was just talking about it. So now I know, my phone listens to me. Quite disturbing actually.
