Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 286 comments The Art of Violence A Lydia Chin/Bill Smith Novel by S.J. Rozan The Art of Violence: A Lydia Chin/Bill Smith Novel by S.J. Rozan. Rozan usually alternates which one of her two private investigators gets to tell the story. This time Bill Smith deals with a convicted killer turned celebrated artist who believes he's a serial killer. This is #13 in the series but the mystery reads easily as a standalone.

Araych | 676 comments Moonflower Murders Moonflower Murders (Susan Ryeland #2) by Anthony Horowitz by Anthony Horowitz

Susan Ryeland #2, OK to read as a stand-alone. Susan is hired by the parents of a missing woman to help find her, and the disappearance seems to be related to an 8-year-old murder. Actually 2 books in one. Very entertaining mystery, highly recommended. 4 stars.

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments I really enjoyed The Crossing, the first of Aussie author B. Michael Radburn's mystery series about a park ranger escaping his grief by taking a posting in Tasmania. It's frying pan into the fire stuff, except it's so bl**dy freezing that the fire might be welcome. Good read!

Araych | 676 comments Archie Goes Home Archie Goes Home (The Nero Wolfe Mysteries Book 15) by Robert Goldsborough by Robert Goldsborough

Nero Wolfe series by Goldsborough #15, recommend the reader have some familiarity with the characters. Archie is called back to his home town to solve a possible murder. This entry in the series was a bit of a disappointment. The plot movement wasn't smooth and the dialogue sounds stilted and artificial. I've loved the Wolfe mysteries for years but this one is no better than fair.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments Prodigal Son Prodigal Son (Orphan X, #6) by Gregg Andrew Hurwitz by Gregg Andrew Hurwitz

In this 6th book in the 'Orphan X' series, Evan Smoak protects the life of an impound lot worker who witnessed a crime. He also experiences an emotional upheaval stemming from his past. The book can be read as a standalone, but familiarity with the series is beneficial.

Plenty of excitement. 3.5 stars

i enjoyed the series but felt a few of them were lacklustre and took procedural realism too seriously at the expense of gripping. Laughing Policeman is my favourite by far. I've been looking out for an affordable copy of the Walter Matthau film version which i saw many moons ago. Some of Mankell's best (early) Wallander books come close,

Sci-fi mystery. A member of a very rich and powerful family is found murdered in Newcastle, England 200 years in the future. This is a very detailed police procedural stretching out to 948 pages. Life is too short. Not recommended.

No, it's rather the contrary, isn't it? I've wasted enough time and money on bestsellers myself, so it's good to know that I can safely delete Where the Crawdads Sing from my TBR-list.
