Kia Abdullah is an author and travel writer from London. She has published two novels with a third, Take It Back, to be published by HarperCollins in October 2019.

Kia has written for The Guardian, The New York Times, BBC and Lonely Planet, and is the founding editor of outdoor travel blog Atlas & Boots, read by 200,000 people a month.

Born in Tower Hamlets in east London, Kia was raised in a family of eight children. As the most stubborn of six daughters, she constantly found herself in trouble for making choices that clashed with her parents’, a habit they came to accept when she became their first and only child to graduate from university.

In 2006, Kia wrote and published her first novel, Life, Love & Assimilation, which she now d

It instantly piques others’ interest, lends you intellectual gravitas and – if you wear it well – conjures an air of raffish subversiveness (“I didn’t succumb to the desk job! I lived life my own way!”). Writing is an indulgence and being able to say that you do it for a living is an absurd privilege, especially for a working-class girl from east London.

I have to say though: it took me a long time to get here. Even after I had published two novels, I still felt that I wasn’t a “real” writer because I wasn’t making a full-time living from my work. That has changed now and I’m finally comfortable in the skin of a writer, pallid and sun-deprived as it may be. (less)

I truly believe that a deadline is one of the most effective motivators for writers. When I started writing over a decade ago, I used to see writers grumbling about deadlines and feel a pang of jealousy because, hey, no one was waiting for my writing! Now, I have deadlines too – sometimes agreed with my agent, sometimes promised to an editor but always, always promised to myself. That’s how I am inspired to write: by knowing that I have to.(less)

It was 2.43am when my phone stirred me from an ink dark sleep. As I woke, I remember thinking: ‘Sod’s law. The one time I leave it on loud, I get a text in the middle of the night.’

I grappled for the phone and clasped it in the crease of my palm. The name on screen startled me from sleep. It was an ex I hadn’t heard from in nine years or so. He still lived near my childhood home and his message... Read more of this blog post »
