I get the robot-check on and off, too, Phrynne, if it makes you feel better...

Maybe GR checks up only on you tall poppies. I'm starting to feel slighted. 🤣🤣

message 354: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 326 comments I tried logging out and logging back in a few days ago. It has only happened to me again once since then, so hopefully the problem is fixed!

message 355: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9837 comments I've been getting the robot a lot too with those stupid pictures of bridges and traffic lights. Also been asked to sign in again a lot - very annoying! Maybe some of us are suspicious!!

I'm getting the sign in again too - even though I always tick 'keep me signed in'. And that robot is ridiculous!

Sarah | 1543 comments Gah! The captcha is back on reviews (for me, anyway) - seriously considering a moritorium on writing new reviews until it goes away...

Actually, I've found that I have to log in every time I want to access the site, too. I was thinking it was just me. Maybe it has something to do with Amazon—since they now own GR? I suppose the one upside is that it makes GR a bit more secure?

I wonder if Amazon/Goodreads have set the algorithm so that it's identifying some of us who read/review very regularly as "suspicious posting behaviour". If so, they need to tighten it up or risk losing members...

message 360: by Carolyn (last edited Jul 12, 2022 11:26PM) (new)

Carolyn | 9837 comments Is anyone else having trouble using GR? For the last few days I've been getting error messages when I try to link, post, comment or even mark a book as currently reading. This is happening on both my laptop (Mac) and iPad (have tried restarting both). I was hoping it was a GR glitch that would be fixed and go away but it hasn't I don't see anyone else complaining about so maybe it's just me.

I either get the 'So sorry there was a problem completing your request' or get sent to the 'end of the line' page or get the pink box of gobbledygook. I have managed to post a couple of reviews and comments (after multiple attempts and typing in the code for the book and reviews) but it's very frustrating.
(This is my third attempt at posting this!)
Any suggestions?

message 361: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 326 comments Carolyn, that sounds the same as my problem! I wrote about it a bit further back in this thread. Sometimes it gets better when i log out and log back in. But it always happens again.

Carolyn | 9837 comments Meg wrote: "Carolyn, that sounds the same as my problem! I wrote about it a bit further back in this thread. Sometimes it gets better when i log out and log back in. But it always happens again."

Is it still happening Meg? It's been pretty constant for me, even logging out and back in doesn't help. If I keep trying I can eventually post a comment or review or rate a book. I've given up linking books and authors but can sometimes type in the code.

message 363: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3567 comments I've had a fair few 'took too long' pages. Nothing else, though.

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Sometimes mine takes ages and then loads an empty page, then loads properly on second attempt. But almost always slow loading lately.

message 365: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9837 comments Well, I don't want to speak too soon... but I just tried changing my GR password and everything is working perfectly again.

Could be coincidence, but after 4-5 days of the site being painful for it to be absolutely fine again in an instant makes that seem unlikely. Not that I can think of any logical reason why a password change should work...

I've had a few hiccups too, having to refresh or go back because of the messages. I think it's probably GR end - trying to do too much change which we don't need.

It often still happens on my phone, but doesn't happen on my laptop any more. I hope it gets properly fixed for both of us!

Mine is working okay at the moment but I did wonder the other day about missing notifications.

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments Phrynne wrote: "Mine is working okay at the moment but I did wonder the other day about missing notifications."

Same here. Site is mostly working (occasionally stalls a bit), but I've found some missing notifications, too. Comments I didn't know about - that sort of thing.

message 371: by Icewineanne (new)

Icewineanne | 267 comments I’m no longer able to click on a book cover or book link from someone’s comments in a thread to access the book’s main page. Keep getting that “sorry there was a problem completing your request” message on a blank page. It’s very frustrating.

Also, I’m seeing tons of books with very high overall ratings (over 4.00). But when I scroll down to the reviews, there are so many negative & lukewarm reviews that there’s no way those books would have garnered such high average ratings.
Now I feel like I can’t trust the posted overall rating anymore.

That's strange Anne!! Are you using a laptop or the app? And is yours at Beta or 'normal'? I'm not having a problem with your first item, and haven't tested the second. Perhaps you should query it in the help section?

message 373: by Carolyn (last edited Jul 26, 2022 01:31AM) (new)

Carolyn | 9837 comments Your first issue sounds a bit like the problem I was having before for most of a week - mainly not being able to post comments, reviews or link books. I just kept getting the 'there was a problem message', the timed out page or the pink box of goobledegook.

My problem disappeared after I changed my GR password - which surely had to be coincidental - and hasn't occurred again (🤞). Could be worth trying anyway! I hope your problem just goes away too.

I haven't noticed an anomaly about the review numbers, but if you check the filter option at the top of the Community Reviews (after all the friends' reviews), you should be able to see how many people ranked which number of stars.

message 377: by Icewineanne (new)

message 384: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1543 comments I'm not getting notifications from "Share your Reviews (and Thoughts) Here" thread, which is seriously annoying... Everything else seems to be coming through, as far as I can tell.

I'm also getting the intermittent problems with posting comments and reviews, with the "unknown error" message. Hence my piecemeal posting of reviews in dribs and drabs - I'm copying and saving a lot to avoid losing material - and holding my breath every time I click "save". Generally, closing the window and re-opening resolves this, but then it will crop up again a few days later... Also the now-you-see-them-now-you-don't CAPTCHA requirements on EVERY.SINGLE.TWEAK of a review...

No one likes it Sarah - heaps of people have commented on how awful it is, but I would say the decision is already made and they do the feedback thing to look good!!

message 391: by Carolyn (last edited Aug 11, 2022 09:10PM) (new)

Carolyn | 9837 comments I gave a lot of feedback when they had the beta version, and I know a lot of other people did too, but it doesn't look like they made any major changes. I think only a random selection got to look at the beta version, so now they're asking for general feedback. I hope they listen to people but don't hold your breath!

message 392: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Exactly what I was thinking (I told them I hated it and that, as far as I'm concerned, the whole site has gone downhill badly since Amazon got their claws into it - not in precisely those words).

And you're right! Unfortunate that it is. Once Otis left, the vultures attacked!

message 395: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments I'm sure I'm speaking too soon, but I still have the 'old' page with a kind of apology at the top that says thanks for having tried the beta (I looked a couple of times and told them it was awful).

Then they said they're preparing "to bring the new book page experience to all of our customers". Can hardly wait (NOT).

Meg (megscl) | 326 comments Unpopular opinion obviously, but I actually like the new look! My only issue was that you couldn't see all the genres/shelves at first, but I gave that feedback and they added it.
