I'm sure I saw a Telemovie of it when I was 10.

Yes, that ankle scene is horrific!

It is flipping amazing! I absolutely love it so far! :)

Hehe, I completely agree with that reaction. That scene was awful!

Also, To Kill a Mockingbird is brilliant! You should definitely push it up your TBR a bit ;)

Can't you read it for "Other Awards - erotica"?

It would also fit under Oscars since there is a movie based on it.

message 1611: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments It's amazing how many of King's books fit for emmy or oscar. I get surprised when I find a book that wasn't made ibto a movie. Then there is still the myatery of my favorite movie Rose Red qhich I still can't figure if it was based on a book or not. Low budget movies and mini series was always his thing though. The fun was always find which character is Stephen King as he usually played someone

message 1612: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments There is a book called The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer: My Life at Rose Red written by Joyce Reardon, the main character in Stephen King's Rose Red.

http://horror.wikia.com/wiki/Rose_Red

I read this book "pre goodreads" (when I joined Goodreads). For some reason, I rated most of my pre goodreads books as 3 stars. I remember this book, and it would most likely have been a 4 or 5 star read.

message 1613: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I am reading Travels with Casey by Benoit Denizet-Lewis and am quite disappointed int this book:( There have been some "cute" moments with Casey, the dog but not enough to really hold my interest. Too bad I didn't get this on audio where I could speed up the dialogue..sigh..I'm going to continue reading it though. I now realize why it was on sale at the bookstore :)

message 1614: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time this morning. I liked it, but didn't love it. I don't know, I have very mixed emotions surrounding this one.

I'm also working on Gathering Blue, book two in The Giver Quartet. I'm loving it and should finish up tonight or tomorrow.

I've decided to finally read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer! I've wanted to read it since I was a kid, but for whatever reason I never have. It should fit in nicely to finish out the toppler week.

Further to this, I did a search on the book itself and learned that it was part of a $200,000 marketing campaign for Stephen King's TV series. It was written by Ridley Pearson under the pseudonym of Joyce Reardon, and was written as a tie-in to the series.

There's some really interesting information in the section titled "Genesis of the Book" on Wikipedia.

message 1617: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Cool. I'LL check thise out later Janice. Rose Red is such a slow suspensful spookiness. Thats what I like about it. Not in your face boo, or gory. Just slow and suttle.

Hi Kristie. I counted it as Academy Award. It was made into a movie, although I have never seen it.

No kidding, Travis. It has to be one of the most horrifying scenes in the movie. I think I skimmed over it in the book. I still cannot believe I read the book AFTER I saw the movie.

message 1620: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I have a vague recollection of watching the movie. definitely read the book. not sure what order I did them in though.

message 1621: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished To Kill a Mockingbird which was brilliant! It's one of my favourite reads of 2015.

I have just made a start on my fourth toppler book, The Rosie Project.

message 1622: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Finished my reread of Mr. Mercedes which was just as good the 2nd time around for the Toppler. There were some parts I didn't remember, but a lot of it was deja vu. King certainly did a great job with the Mystery Edgar Award winner. An excellent Mystery/Thriller!

message 1623: by Lisa (last edited Jun 19, 2015 04:39AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Rosie Project for the toppler. I liked it but not as much as I thought I would sadly. It was a sweet story and had some funny moments but it just didn't quite work for me and I was left feeling a bit disappointed. I gave it 3 stars.

Next up for me is Private Peaceful which will probably be my last toppler read. It will also work for my World War One mini project.

I remember going on in another group how good this was. One person took my advice and read it. Took him about 3 months and finally gave it 1 star and a horrible review. Never recommended it again except in Srephen King friendly circles

message 1625: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Travis, some folks just have a thing against Stephen King. They think all he wrote was pulp horror fiction. He hasn't won so many awards for being a pulp writer. Well... guess you already know I'm a big fan of his! lol

message 1626: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I finished listening to Devil Bones by Kathy Reichs. I liked listening to this book over reading the books in the series. I found the audio to be more entertaining because her books can be pretty dry. I'm going to continue with this series but only in audio..so hopefully the rest is available in audio :)

Good movie. Old school. Very "noir"

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Travis/Janice - anyone who does audio books,
If you have never listened to The Maltese Falcon, you SHOULD!

I am listening to the book narrated by William Dufris. I have the speed cranked to 1.5 and he/his voices are great. I am following along with the text though, just because I am not used to the speed. This will probably be my last toppler book.

message 1629: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished my last book for the toppler, Private Peaceful. It was a 5 star read for me so it was a great way to finish up what has been a really fun week.

My next book will be The Narrow Road to the Deep North for the group read but I probably won't start it until tomorrow.

I've added it to my audible wishlist. It would make a great toppler read since it's only 7 hours long. Thanks Cherie.

message 1631: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments toppler books all finished so now back to my magnificent The Daylight War.

message 1632: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Back to the regularly scheduled reading:

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry - started before toppler
Enchanted: Erotic Bedtime Stories For Women - started during toppler because I needed some mindless escapism fluff. I could have counted it if I had finished it.
Trapped - will start later today. Back to stalking my next serial killing.

message 1633: by Tasha (new)

I'll resume The Narrow Road to the Deep North tonight.

Roz | 4529 comments I started reading Divergent

message 1638: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I started the last book in the Monument 14 YA series, Savage Drift and then I will finish my current series level with Theodosia and the Last Pharaoh and knock two more series off my load.

message 1639: by Debra (last edited Jun 21, 2015 01:52AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Finished 7 books for the Toppler. Whew! Now I'm back to the stack I've got in my bedroom from the library and started with The Smile of a Ghost, another book in the Merrily Watkins series. Already engrossed in the book and again say that this is an amazing series.

message 1640: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments I started reading Burning Down the House: The End of Juvenile Prison by Nell Bernstein- it's a really good book- but I had to put it down for a while. This is a quote from the book. According to a study by the "Oregon Social Learning Center, which found the average reported age of 'first sexual encounter' for girls in the juvenile justice system to be 6.75."

The whole book is full of ghastly stuff, but that was just too awful.

message 1641: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Oh, that's not a typo, it's really six-point-seventy-five years of age.

message 1642: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Bella, that's really sad. No childhood at all.

message 1643: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Just horrible...
I understand how do you feel, Bella, it happens to me too. I feel the responsibility of read and learn about this topics, but at the same time is so hard to do it. I instantaneously think in my own kids, and is so difficult to keep or reading.

message 1644: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Yeah... in Latin America there is a frightful amount of child-mothers (ca. 300 a YEAR), the age begins at 8

message 1645: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19139 comments Oh wow, Mariab! That's just awful. They're practically still babies.

message 1646: by Tasha (new)

Tasha wow, that's unbelievable really. Very sad.

message 1647: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Oh my goodness, Mariab. So young.

message 1648: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Related to that sad subject, I am reading Son by Lois Lowry. It is the fourth and final book in The Giver Quartet. Those of you that have read The Giver may remember that at the age of 12 children are assigned their careers, one of which is a job called "birthmother." Son is the tale of one of these birthmothers, also called vessels. Depending on the age and physical maturity of the birthmothers, they may be inseminated for the first time as young as 13 years old. While everything is clinical and nothing sexual happens, it is still disturbing. The babies these children give birth to are called "products" and they never get to even lay eyes on their product.

I didn't "love" The Giver, but I am so glad I decided to continue the series. Son is supposed to tie the first three books together and I'm so excited to see where it is leading.

I also started on The Return of the King.

message 1649: by C (new)
