KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I've actually owned Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter for probably 2 years and haven't even started reading it yet. Every time I think about it, I'm just not in the mood for it. Plus, I'm addicted to the convenience of my kindle, so paper books tend to get put off. Since I do most of my reading in bed, I need to buy a book light so I will be more inclined to read real books.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm reading another book in the Merrily Watkins 5-star series: The Prayer of the Night Shepherd. It's great so far!

message 1503: by Susan (new)

Susan Guard | 695 comments I'm reading Death, Taxes, and a Skinny No-Whip Latte which is the second in a new series I've started and the last 5 points I need to kill off a level in the Serial Killer challenge. Just trying to wrap things up before becoming obsessed by the upcoming toppler.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Hello Kimey! How was your trip? (That's actually a question for another thread...)

message 1505: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Finished Calculated in Death (In Death, #36) by J.D. Robb . I quite enjoyed this book but I love all the books in this series. The commroderie between the characters is great and writing keeps me reading. I want this series to keep going forever, lol!

I liked Fangirl

Oh, Lisa, good to see you reading SF too... well, you read History-related books (so it seems to me), and SF is just the "prolongation" of History, after all
And... prompt one more goes in my TBR

Kazen Debra wrote: "I'm reading Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter. It's pretty good, so far!"

Ooo, one of my favorite podcasts, Literary Disco, did an episode about Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter! If you find yourself wanting to discuss the book when you're done I recommend it. :D

(eta: The actual discussion of the book starts around 30 minutes in)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished Tricked today for my series killer challenge. Then I started Wolves of the Calla.

I can remember there was a movie (not so good one) with Kevin Costner about that book

message 1512: by Stephanie (last edited Jun 02, 2015 05:50AM) (new)

Stephanie I have started Pines (Wayward Pines #1) by Blake Crouch because hubby and I are watching the show. He told me last night I can't read it though. He doesn't want me knowing what's going to happen before he does ;-) I told him too bad :p.
I'm only a few pages in but hoping to get some more reading in today. I have Life of Pi by Yann Martel to pick up at the library.

message 1515: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I really liked Life of Pi. I was happily surprised by it.

message 1516: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I have it for the Toppler and the June challenge. I'm looking forward to reading it since I liked the movie so much :-)
So far Pines is good. The show though has Ben as what I would call a teenager and in the book he is 7 years old. Weird..

Stephanie Mariab wrote: "LOL Stephanie!

So true but it will keep me from talking during the show..I have a habit of talking during sometimes as in.."why are they doing that or "why don't they do this instead"
I only talk during the show if I am getting frustrated by it :-)

message 1518: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finally finished The Autobiography Of Henry VIII which took me a long time to read but I really enjoyed it and gave it 5 stars.

I've heard a lot of people say that about Life of Pi. People seem to like it more than they expect to.

I had that same issue with Jurassic Park. I watched the movie first and the sister was older and a teenager. In the book, she is the younger child and just a little girl. I forget how old, but maybe 5 or so. It was weird to get used to.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Kazen, thanks for the link about Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter. I will watch it.

Mariab, didn't know there was a movie. Too bad it wasn't very good. Kevin Costner is a great actor.

message 1523: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I finished The Prayer of the Night Shepherd in the Merrily Watkins series. Another 5-star page-turning read. The writing, dialogue, plot twists, suspense, theologian and spirituality ideas were amazing. As is true of all of the books.

Now I'm finishing a romance series (don't ask me how I got on a romance series - at least it's paranormal). Here's the book: Blood Magick. I have to say Nora Roberts writes very well, so it's not hard to read her. I just don't like that the people in the book seem to all be gorgeous and have few flaws. I like my characters more realistic.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Janice, I'm so excited you have started Wolves of the Calla. I'm going to have to see what you say about it in the Dark Tower thread! (jumping up and down for joy)

message 1525: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Just finished Dexter's Final Cut for the series challenge. Now I'm not sure what to start reading next. I'm torn between reading another series book towards my challenge or to read a stand alone book as I've been neglecting those or The Three for a group read. I might have to use the fruit machine.

message 1526: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished Retribution Falls which I rated 4 stars. It was a really fun book with some likeable characters and I found it a quick, easy read. I would definitely recommend checking it out if you like fantasy/steampunk and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I am now going to start The Fair Fight which I have heard a lot of good things about.

message 1527: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I finished Pines by Blake Crouch (on app so can't link book:( ). I quite enjoyed it :) I was put off at the beginning because since I have started watching the show, I was annoyed that things happened differently in the book then what I had just watched :) but as the book went on, I found myself really getting into the story and can't wait to read the rest of the books :)

It's a great series. I hate when a movie/TV series is so different from the book. That is so annoying. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the rest!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I'm currently reading Daughter of Smoke & Bone. Unless the ending goes completely pear-shaped, this is firmly on my "Holy F, Why Has Nobody Told Me!" shelf.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just finished The Spirit Eater, third book in the Eli Monpress series. Next is The Miniaturist, for the group read.

I've heard that one was really good, but haven't read it yet. Looks like I need to move it up my TBR!

message 1535: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Currently reading Silver Borne Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, #5) by Patricia Briggs . Hoping to kill off another series soon.

message 1536: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm reading Midnight in Death by JD Robb. It is a short read, only 90 pages. I feel like if I don't read the novellas then the series isn't complete for me, lol!
And ack! My TBR has reached the 400 mark :) I am so happy to have found this group so I can expand my reading :)

Camilla | 2099 comments Stephanie wrote: "And ack! My TBR has reached the 400 mark :) I am so happy to have found this group so I can expand my reading :) "

Sigh, I can't remember the time when my TBR would have been so short... Currently I'm somewhere around 5,400.

message 1538: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Oh my goodness, Camilla, and here I thought 400 was a lot :) this just shows how awesome this group is and how talking about different books makes others want to read it :)

message 1539: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I finished reading Hollow City last night. I hate cliff-hangers, especially when it's for a book (series) I'm not really enthusiastic about. I have to decide whether or not I am invested enough in it to read the next book. I'll put Library of Souls on my wishlist anyway, and consider it when the book is published. The best part about these books are the photographs! I've always loved the old sepia photographs, and these are peculiar indeed. Hmmm... I think I just wrote my review! LOL!

I'll start The Miniaturist for the themed group read tonight.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I actually think i liked book 2 a little better. i do love the characters and the setting.

message 1542: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I finished The Monkey's Raincoat and unfortunately found another series I have to finish. I just started the second in the series Stalking the Angel. I guess I like my detectives / private eyes to be a bit quirky, irreverent and wise cracking.

message 1543: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Joe Pike and Elvis Cole definitely are Roz. I liked the second one better. I have a feeling that series will continue to improve as I think Crais more recent books are much better written than the earlier ones. Which should be the way.

I thought the second one was just as good as the first, Janice. I am looking forward to the 3rd. I am not a huge fan of cliff hangers either, but I am convinced it will be worth the wait.

message 1545: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie After Midnight in Death I picked up Interlude in Death another novella by JD Robb. I forgot how much I liked these short stories between books. Quick entertaining reads.
I'm starting Desecration by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. It is the next book in the left behind series for me to read :) I'm hoping to get this series finished by the end of the year :)

There were things I really liked about the first two books, but something didn't quite connect with me. My new benchmark is Stephen King's comment in Wolves of the Calla is that with some books there is an "ecstasy of perfect recognition". I don't recognize these books.
