I'm having the same problem, coming up with a book that I was supposed to read in school but didn't. :) My problem is I was a "goody two-shoes" student who did everything she was supposed to. ;) Plus, I read for extra credit! What can I say, I've always loved reading! :) I was thinking I might see what Advanced English classes were reading and use one of those books, since I never was in an Advanced English class (my joke was English wasn't my best language, even though it was my only language!).

I also thought I would have trouble with a book I started but never finished. That typically doesn't happen! But, I finally remembered a book I didn't finish reading as a kid (but, not for school so it won't work for that category). And, the reason I stopped reading was because of a "bad" word! ;) I told you I was a "goody two-shoes" as a kid. ;) It is the final book in the Chronicles of Narnia series, of all things, so don't ask me what "bad" word it was. :) I figured I could re-read the rest of the series while I was at it, and use them for other books for this challenge, like a book with magic, a book with nonhuman characters, among others. ;)

And, I wasn't sure what I would use for the trilogy, but I remembered that a movie my husband bought me last Christmas was based on a book that is part of a trilogy, and I was wanting to read it! The Inkheart Trilogy: Inkheart, Inkspell, Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke is what I'm going to read. :) Yeah for challenges that remind of books I want to read!

LOL! I wouldn't say I did everything I was supposed to do. I was somewhat lazy and wasn't planning to attend college, so I didn't care that much. For almost all of my classes, I could get A's or B's without much effort. However, I did do all of the required reading. That was probably because I struggled so much in the honors English classes I was put into. I had to put forth a lot of effort in order to get decent grades. I never could analyze literature in order to write good papers on the books, but at least I could say that I did do the reading, even though my papers were very short and without substance.

In my Advanced Accounting class, my teacher gave a quiz for each chapter. He just photocopied from the textbook a page of questions with multiple choice answers (we also had a test for each chapter that required much more of the student). It didn't take long for us students to figure that out. After a while, students decided they didn't need to memorize the questions along with the answers. They just memorized the answers in order. I remember telling some of my fellow students that the teacher may decide to mix the quiz up sometime, so we should continue to study the questions and answers together. Well, shortly after that, the teacher did mix it up. I got a score of 100%, but everyone else failed it.

Jill Tool Marisa wrote: "Just curious here: What do you understand by "A classic romance"? ;)"

I think of Wuthering Heights, Romeo and Juilet, something along those lines. but then again it could also be Gone With the Wind, there's a book out about Bogie and Bacall titled Bogart & Bacall: A Love Story to me that would be classified as a classic romance. I think you might be able to interpreter that into so many different categories from Marc Anthony and Cleopatra to whom ever. Hope this helps.

I'm taking that to mean a book that is frequently required reading in school but may not have been assigned to you. For example, I read To Kill a Mockingbird as a school assignment, but I was not assigned Watership Down. This applies to a number of classics as well.

I'll try although, as other have said, there're some I'm not going to read (no school skipped book, no cover election...)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I don't know @Marisa, if you rule out a couple categories, you might as well just not do it.

Maybe there was a book you didn't read in school, but other classes did?

Maybe you could pick a book based on the cover...

Kirsten, I know It's probably I don't finish it. Cover I can choose, school book no. There's only a book I changes, I read it later and I am not going to read it again ("Cien años de soledad" is not my cup of tea). And I don't remember other (too many years ago).

I see it differently. We will still be reading a variety of books even if you don't do all 52. The challenge goal is to encourage us to diversify the books we read.

Not my cup of tea either Marisa. I read (listened to) Love in the Time of Cholera last year and I say never again for either of these books - no matter what reward or for what challenge!

At this time I can't recall what our required reading was at school to know if I didn't read any (almost 50 years ago now). However, I shall try and do all elements of the challenge but I too am dubious I shall achieve all.

message 74: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Why don't we find a required reading list and choose a book we didn't read in school? I remember when I was in school the other World Lit classes read Hiroshima by John Hersey, but my class didn't.

My point is we should TRY. I don't mean to be argumentative. But, I'm not going to start by saying I WON'T do one of the challenges. I know it's about diversifying. And I think it's a fun looking challenge.

I may not finish this challenge. But, I'm not going to rule out any of them. We'll just see...

Kimberly | 678 comments I agree Kirsten. :) Since I don't really have a book from school I was supposed to read but didn't, I figured finding a typical book read in high school, but I wasn't necessarily assigned would work in its place. I don't think I've ever read To Kill a Mockingbird. :O So, I will finally read it. :)

I agree with both of you - the point of the challenge is to do your best with all of them, but the goal is to diversify your reading, so any honest attempt at the challenge is an automatic win.

For me, it's not the high school read that will be my personal death knell - it's the pulitzer prize winner, the book set in the future, and the book that made you cry. None of the winners look like anything I want to read and I categorically dislike the other two. I'll give them all a go, but solid money is on at least two of those going unchecked.

Jill Tool Marisa wrote: "I'll try although, as other have said, there're some I'm not going to read (no school skipped book, no cover election...)"

I think that one thing you might do for this one is that depending on the area in the States and the era there might be some that you can use. For instance when I was in junior high I had to read the book, The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare but my daughter's never had to read that. They had to read James and the Giant Peach which I didn't have to read. So maybe I'll read that one. Now I had to read The Catcher in the Rye and two of my daughter's had to read that one, but then when we moved to another state, my younger daughter and younger son didn't have to read that book, they each had to read different books then their older siblings. So maybe you can use that platform so to speak as a book you were suppose to read. Times have changed and they do change what books people should read, as well as the different curriculum's of schools in each state. Just a different way to look at it

Book set in the future? That's not too hard unless you hate science fiction or some other thing. But if you want to diversify your reading...

Do you like romantic suspense? J.D. Robb's In Death series is set in the future and is also a police procedural and mystery as well as romance.

Also, I recently read J by Howard Jacobson which is set in A future, and I really enjoyed it.

As for Pulitzers, looking at just the fiction, there's quite a few I'd like to read and one I'm in the middle of The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

To me, I'm always finding myself crying. Just check one of my bookshelves: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I guess I'm not really worried about most of the categories. I guess I figure when I get down to some of the "harder" ones I'll ask for help from you guys.

So far, I'm doing alright. Of course, a book written by a female author or a book with a one-word title wasn't too hard.

LOL!!

I'm keeping my list separately in a spreadsheet... I'll just post when I finish along with the category. (As I've done so far.) Takes less space that way.

lol, I actually do really, really dislike SF, in spite of trying it several times. But... I think there are a couple of books I have on the TBR that might be set in the future but aren't SF - Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next books. I'm not sure if they are, but if so, cool.

None of the pulitzer fiction books appeal to me but I am considering a non-fiction prize winner (the challenge doesn't specify).

Crying - I HATE crying and I strongly dislike books that make me cry. Unless one sneaks up on me (the last one almost did) I'm not going to look for a book that will make me cry. I'm eager to diversify, but I draw the line at looking for ways to actively make myself unhappy or rage-y (the only two things that actually make me cry).

ETA: Forgot I meant to say thanks for the book recs! :)

About Thursday Next, not a future (1985), but a parallel world, sorry (and I'll never forgive this author what he did in the second book...).

Also, how about a book like 1984 by George Orwell? It is no longer the future but it was when it was written.

I also don't think you should rule out ALL science fiction. There are so many different genres and types of science fiction. I grew up on science fiction so I never understand people that totally rule it out.

Of course, there are so many books I've loved in all different genres that I would never have read because of preconceived notions that I hate to see it in others.

In my view, it is just literary bigotry.

This challenge is a way to open yourself up. Do it!

There is a subgenre of science fiction called speculative fiction. Margaret Atwood practices this. So does a great author called Paolo Bacigalupi. I highly recommend The Windup Girl. It takes place in a future where global warming and flooding has occurred where GMO's have decimated the world and where oil is scarce. It's wonderful.

Well... rats. Also, I'm at book two and now you have me very very concerned about what happens in it!! lol...

I'm debating between Guns, Germs, and Steel and The Making of the Atomic Bomb. I used to read Jared Diamond's columns in Discover Magazine for years, and he's fantastic - but his writing style can be dry and that is in my mind when I eye this book. The Making of the Atomic Bomb has been reviewed highly by some of my book friends for being highly readable, but is quite long - almost 900 pages. I'm not sure I'm 900-pages-interested in atomic energy and the bomb.

To your question about memoirs - I think either biography, or auto-biography, or just plain memoirs will fit the category perfectly. I used What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding for that category - but the Ada's Algorithm looks really good!

I also don't think you should rule out ALL science fiction. There are so many different genres and types of science fiction. I grew up on science fiction so I never understand people that totally rule it out.

Of course, there are so many books I've loved in all different genres that I would never have read because of preconceived notions that I hate to see it in others.

In my view, it is just literary bigotry..."

Kirsten, I love (and envy a little bit) that you are so open to, and enjoy so many, different genres and I totally appreciate what you're trying to say and I actually agree with you. The point *is* to open myself up to new reading avenues I normally would never have tried. But I've tried Science Fiction before - many, many times and kinds. It just doesn't do it for me - I don't like it.

What you're suggesting is akin to suggesting I try 180 different kinds of coffee because there must be one I like out there, and I'm a tea drinker. Sure, probably there's a coffee out there I can choke down (it would be the one that tastes least like coffee) but I really dislike coffee, so why go through the process only to find one cup I can tolerate - I'll just stick with my tea! :D

Bigotry is a loaded, loaded word and I'm trying not to get het up about your decision to use it. I'm no more a literary bigot because I personally don't like SF, than I am a beverage bigot because I don't like coffee. If I wanted to ban all SF, or burn it, or judge people who enjoy it and persecute those that write it, then you might have an argument, but I am not at all interested in doing any of those things. Judging people for what they don't read isn't any better than judging them for what they do read. You are absolutely entitled to your thoughts and feelings on the matter, but confrontational statements like that one aren't really in keeping with the spirit of this challenge or group.

As I've said several times in this thread, I am not going to just "not" do any one category: I'll try to find something that meets the criteria of each challenge prompt. But I'm not going to wind myself up trying to find a book I can choke down either. The challenge is supposed to open our reading horizons, yes, but it's also supposed to be fun. So I'll keep an open mind throughout the year and I thank you again for taking the time out to recommend titles for me to try, I'll definitely check them out. But if I end this year having only read 50 books I normally wouldn't have read instead of 53, well, that's a win in my book.

Bigotry is a loaded word. And I am sorry I used it. However, I do believe that science fiction is such a wide genre that I believe there is one out there you might like.

For a great memoir, I recommend A Queer and Pleasant Danger: The True Story of a Nice Jewish Boy Who Joins the Church of Scientology and Leaves Twelve Years Later to Become the Lovely Lady She is Today. It is a lot of fun to read!

Kirsten (kmcripn) Jennifer - I wanted to send a private message to continue our discussion which is getting to way O/T. If you want to, please send me a PM as I can't seem to send YOU one.

If not, I'll just accept your beliefs. As my opinion on this challenge is to hit all the easy ones and then work on the harder ones. I sure hope I haven't offended you (or anyone else in this thread).

Nope, not offended - it was a loaded statement, but in the context of your overall post(s), I got that it came from a place of passion for books more than anything else and I totally get that. It's also obvious that you're incredibly well-read, well-spoken and open-minded enough to have this discussion and *keep* it a discussion (as opposed to a flame-fest) and I respect that.

FWIW, my husband *completely* agrees with you, lol. And I've already read a memoir, but the one you recommended to Marisa looks great!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) For "book you were supposed to read in high school but didn't" - I didn't skip out on any HS reads, but we never read any Mark Twain. Did anyone out there have him for assigned HS reading? I'm hoping so, as I have an omnibus of his that includes Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and some of the short stories, and I've never read any of them.

Kimberly | 678 comments I had to read both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in high school. :)

Oh, God, yes! I got in trouble once in my American Lit class when I got caught reading Prince Ombra. I told my teacher I'd already read my assigned 3 chapters. LOL!
