Leona (mnleona) | 179 comments Christine-Have a good time.

I am reading The Royal Windsor Secret Christine Wells that I won and find it a good read. The more I get into the book, the more I am liking it. Fiction and history.

Groovy Lee Have fun, Christine! Be careful of the heat.

My daughter and I are taking Staycations. There's so much to do here at home. For one, we're getting part of the house recarpeted next week. I'll be glad when it's done. There's some crochet projects I'm eager to get to. Plus, I'm recovering from Covid rebound--that's fun.

I hope everyone is keeping safe from the heat and enjoying the summer. It'll be winter before you know it--ugh.

Hey guys! Been gone a while. However, work is crazy, began writing, and my wife had a hysterectomy. It's been nuts but back to making sure I read in my free time as well. I missed you guys.

Groovy Lee Thanks, Christine. I appreciate that:)

I saw a UFO last night--for real:

I get to see the Space Station when it glides across the sky certain times of the month. Last night was its time to glide by. Okay, so as it was going over the house, I noticed behind it was a line of round lights, 12-15 in a horizontal row, following it. They seemed connected, and just following behind it. It was one of those, "what's that, followed by a wow", and yelling for my daughter who, of course, didn't hear me. Weird...

Travis, all the best to your wife. Hope she's healing well.

She is! She returned to work via home, but will be glad to be back to the office on Monday. It just is weird having groceries delivered.

Groovy Lee I stated earlier that I saw a UFO--it wasn't. It was a giant satellite. But it was awesome to look at.

That's good news, Christine!

Melindam | 4427 comments Writing this message to you from Greece, the lovely island of Zakynthos where I am spending my summer hols with my family.
And one of the things I always do as I am finding my way along the hotel pools and the beach and secretly checking out what other people are reading. ;)

That's on of my bookish idiosyncracies. :D
One of the guys was reading a book that's on my TBR as well. SAS: Rogue Heroes by Ben McIntyre. :)

What are you crocheting? I'm having a hard time balancing knit/crochet projects and reading right now. Both my project and reading list are growing at an alarming rate!

Late in reading messages.

Hope she is doing OK. Remember not to pick up heavy things for a bit; I did that and the doctor was not happy.
Nice you are taking good care of her.
Take care.

I loved Greece. Have a good time.

message 1621: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Melindam - I love to do that too! I've been known to pull out my phone and try to sneakily get a look at a cover from far away. lol Have a wonderful time in Greece.

Travis - I hope your wife is doing well. Was she able to go back to the office yesterday?

Elizabeth - I also crochet. I have a couple of projects going at the moment, mostly Christmas presents started early. I am working on a couple of scarves and a couple blankets. The blankets take forever, so I need smaller projects to work on too so I don't get bored an fell like I'm actually accomplishing something.

message 1622: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Hi, Elizabeth

I'm crocheting coasters (flower power, cat, swirly hearts) to give to friends, and for myself. They really do keep the surfaces dry--LOL! Next is a simple doily to keep the TV legs from scratching the table. Then it's back to the baby blankets.

What are you working on?

Kristie, what kind of blankets take you so long?

message 1623: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments They're really afghans. I don't have a lot of time to spend on it and I'm not a fast crocheter. Plus, I tend to get bored easily, so only crochet in small chunks of time. By having a few projects going I can switch it up if the stitch starts to feel too repetitive.

I'm glad to find a fellow 'snooper'. I always want to know what people are reading if I see them with a book.
I hope you are well away from the fires in Greece.

message 1626: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Thank you, Dorothy. Yes, on "our" island, there are thankfully no fires.
Although one Greek tour guide told us that sadly, these fires are almost always caused by intentional arson.
According to Greek law, it isn't allowed to build on territories covered by woods, but as soon as some woods get burned down, the "for sale" signs are up and new villas and whatnots are being built.

Human greed and stupidity is endless. :(

I always listen to an audiobook while traveling and bring at least a physical and/or ebook with me. Which book I bring depends mostly on what I plan to read, but also where I'll be and how long I'll be away.

message 1630: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments Thanks Groovy

message 1631: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments I always take my kindle for travels, because usually I have no idea what I'll be in the mood for reading once we arrive, so I love to have a wide choice. :)
I have my headset and the audible app on my phone, but I usually don't have the chance to use them during travel or at our destination with my 9-year-old son constantly chattering and demanding attention. :D

Funnily, I also read less when on holiday and at a much more leisurely pace.

I need reading more to switch me off work and stress during the run-of-the-mill days. :)

message 1632: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I also read less on vacations. I think I'm too busy doing other things and enjoying my family and friends. I read less on weekends too. I think I mostly read as relaxation during the week instead of TV and use a lot of audios now while driving or cleaning.

message 1633: by Leona (new)

Leona (mnleona) | 179 comments I take a paperback with me to read but I read very little. We do a lot of cruises so the sea day gives me a chance to read and also on the plane when we fly to Europe.
I am also crocheting blankets for Christmas; they are temperature blankets. I am crocheting granny squares and the first round is the low of the day, the second round is the high of the day and the third is the connect color, which is white. I am making 3 for 3 of my granddaughters.

message 1634: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Wow, Leona. Sounds awesome.

I have nonexistent skills in any kind of needlework, but I totally admire people who do.

After reading, baking is my 2nd comfort-activity, but not during the summer in high temperatures. :)

message 1635: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I didn't realize you were making three temperature blankets, Leona! That's a lot of crocheting.

I also crochet and dabble in paints. I used to really enjoy baking as well, but now that my children have moved out and I have to limit my sugar intake it's a lot less fun.

I also used to have more active past times, but seem to have very sedentary hobbies now. I should probably start doing something active again. Maybe a return to bike riding? That would be convenient. I want to take up yoga again too. I'll have to think about it once the weather cools a bit.

Kristie | 5928 comments That's wonderful, Christine. You must be really looking forward to it.

message 1638: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I have a lot of crocheting projects to give away as gifts. I would love to find a charitable organization to donate my baby blankets to. I prefer to give them away than sell them.

I had every intention of becoming more active this summer. I bought lights for the bicycles so my daughter and I could bike around the neighborhood; new walking shoes so we could walk everywhere. Summer is almost over, and guess where all of that is sitting--they're sitting dormant, that's where.

I'm so disappointed in myself. I know I need to get active, but by the time I'm done with working through the day, I'm too tired. Plus I don't have the desire to. But that's no excuse. I want to, but then I don't.

Have you tried calling a local hospital? Maybe for the NICU babies? Or a shelter for teen moms or mom's leaving domestic abuse situations? I'm sure they'd all love the donations. The mom of a friend of mine used to make tiny baby hats to donate to the hospitals. I make flees blankets that I donate to the Linus Project every year. They may have a suggestion for the baby blankets too.

Same. I always want to until it's time to do it. I tend to like the idea more than the activity. It's not easy.

I'm with you on exercise....I think I may be allergic to it. In school, PE was my least favourite class - I would rather have done double math! Now I am forced to exercise in preparation for getting a knew knee next year.

message 1645: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Those are good ideas, Kristie. I'm going to look into that. Thanks.

Believe it or not, Dorothy, I used to run in my younger years. Loved to run everywhere. I even won trophies in school for it. Still love the IDEA of running. I hope your operation goes well. The idea of having to go through that operation should inspire me to become active:)

message 1646: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Good luck with your operation, Dorothy.

Groovy, I was quite active when I was younger as well, but much less so now. I think it's hard to find group activities that I enjoy for my age group and I don't like solitary exercise. I always enjoyed activities where you don't even realize you're exercising, like team sports. But when you are older, there are fewer options for things like that and my ability isn't as good as once was either, but I'm not quite ready for chair sports either. There are a few things that I'm interested in, but they are far away or at inconvenient times... I just sort of fell out of it. A million and one excuses. lol

Dorothy (vilette) | 115 comments I loved walking and cycling. My husband and I have a tandem bike and I can't wait to get on it again. A couple of years ago we were cycling past our local police station. A police car pulled out and alongside us and we thought we had done something wrong. Instead, the officer lowered his window and said to my husband "the one on the back isn't pedalling". We all drove away laughing.

There is a lady on the You Tube channel, Terry on Yarnjoy, and she crochets 4 hats a month for the babies. They are really cute.
