Andy Carpenter #10, OK to read as a stand-alone. Andy reopens a case he had previously lost. I'm a big fan of The Andy Carpenter series (and also of Rosenfelt's work rescuing dogs). The reality is that some are better than others, and this one is one of the best in the series. 5 stars, highly recommended.

I like this series. 😀

The Mysterious Affair at Styles was her first book, Gretchen, but she got better after that!

I don't think it was a matter of bravery -- it sets up the partnership early on. But more about this in the group read discussion.

Let's see. I've finished Hurricane Season which I'll probably award 4 stars (I loved it but it was so brutal and difficult to read on many levels); this book also ends my International Booker reading for the year. I've also finished The Black Dahlia, also brutal and difficult to read but oh so good.

Most definitely! Loved the Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Two reviews: the excellent

and a debut novel that is full of unrealised potential

When an elite Russian agent is dispatched to plant an atomic bomb on a US airbase in the UK, beleaguered MI5 agent John Preston is pretty much all that stands in his way…

It feels to me like he's setting up character arcs, and I have an idea where it might be going but I don't want to spoil it for myself (or for others) so I'm keeping my thoughts to myself about it until we're all further along in the group read.

The Silent Wife
by:
Karin Slaughter
#10 in the Will Trent series that will not disappoint Slaughter fans. My full review:

Richard Jury #6, OK to read as a stand-alone. Short novel, under 180 pages. Jury is following up a series of child killings. Sounds pretty grim but it's not; this book is a nice addition of the Jury series. 4 stars.

Finished The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy. A crime classic, must read if you can stomach the bleakness. Rating - 5/5

Excellent WWI story of the US Lost Battalion in the Argonne Forest, where the bravery of a homing pigeon, Cher Ami, and Major Charles Whittlesey is outstanding and heartbreaking.

In this 38th book in the 'Lt. Eve Dallas' series, numerous bodies are found in the walls of building that's being renovated. The book can be read as a standalone.
A lot of padding in this mystery. 2.5 stars

I rated it 3.5 stars rounded down. It is a police procedural set in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Finished Fer-de-Lance by Rex Stout. Loved the iconic detective Nero Wolfe, the book itself is a mixed bag. Rating - 3/5

Here’s my three star review:

A psychiatrist with many problems of her own treats patients at the hospital where she works.
Entertaining story. 3 stars

Police procedural following Ash Levine, an L.A. detective as he tries to solve a new case as well as an old one which has haunted him. Some semblance to the Harry Bosch series but not as good. although to be fair this is the author's first book of fiction. I thought it went kind of slowly with Corwin throwing in too much detail about Levine's working through the system. Also, Levine several times runs out alone to follow up on something with no backup, not even telling anyone where he's going. But there's lots of good stuff here as well, so 3 stars.

Still working on Ellroy's The Big Nowhere. We lost our sweet, sweet dog who's been with us 13 years the day before yesterday so my progress is a bit slow these days.

I'm so sorry, Nancy. I know exactly how you feel. I've just hugged the two who are sitting on the couch with me. Our sweet puppies are the best of friends.

A mother is suspected of harming her baby daughter in this domestic suspense novel.
A bit overwritten but compelling. 3 stars
