Alysa H. | 3840 comments I just finished my last Countdown book. I leave for the airport in about 2 1/2 hours, and my flight takes off about 3 hours after that. So hopefully I will know by then whether I can start reading for Safezones.
I cannot finish my Zone 1 books until y’all finish Zone 2, and then nobody can finish Zone 3 until after Zone 1, so when it’s time to read, I will probably start like 3 or 4 different things that I can start/stop/restart.
Besides my Kindle, I am bringing hardcovers of Recursion and my Jane Yolen book with me, because apparently I enjoy having heavy bags in order to best organize my Challenge reading. 🤪

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Thanks all, we are still watching it. They are estimated a category 3 but you never know, and it could turn some.

I will start my book today for the next zone that is marked "start first" once all our countdown books are finished. Was going to start at lunch, but now having lunch with a friend, so will be a bit of a later start. Thankfully this book looks to be an easy read, so I will focus on it today more toward the evening.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments No chance of a Z spell it out? I have a book with a Z character that I really want to read and notice that's Z's are 50 points

I admit to being confused where the word pool comes from and how many we can have.

There aren’t any Z’s anywhere in the Round 2 word pool, unfortunately. (The word pool consists of all the words in the countdown tasks of the current round. We can spell however many we manage to fit within our 40 book maximum!)
Maybe in round 3 there will be a Z somewhere?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Alysa wrote: "Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* wrote: "No chance of a Z spell it out? I have a book with a Z character that I really want to read and notice that's Z's are 50 points

Darn! Will save the book for a Z chance, so hopefully next time.
It's on the scoreboard as 50 so I'm sure it's going to pop up eventually?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Apparently my mind still isn't wrapping around the letters/words for the spell it out. Reading it now again to try and "get it". Otherwise I'll just keeping depending on ya'll to magically make the letters appear on the spreadsheet to fill in lol

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* wrote: "It's on the scoreboard as 50 so I'm sure it's going to pop up eventually?"

Maybe! I don’t think Q has shown up yet either.
In any case, our big mistake in Round 1 was to go for the big shiny word “Carnivorous” because it seemed to have so many 40 point letters and such. I mean, I did some math on TRILOGY and VERSION and whatnot, but not enough to realize that we would get more points spelling IN a billion times.
If the other teams all keep doing that, without running out of time or running out of books for those letters, then we stand a chance at rising up the scoreboard.
If after Rounds 2 and 3 we are still just hovering somewhere in the middle, we should probably just say Screw It and spend Round 4 reading whatever the F we want. 😎

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I finished my O book this morning but couldn't get on until now. Currently updating the spreadsheet. So we can start safe zone books now. We're starting with zone 2 right?

eta: all updated and book marked as read.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I have another series I coudl zip through that I really want to read but it's B for series, M for author (first and last)...sighs. Will hold on it too

Right now "Y" hunting.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Okay found some easy looking Y author that writes quick and quirky cozy mysteries.

message 513: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments This rounds tasks didn't offer much up in the way of harder letters. Just U and Y.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have never thought that Z was all that hard to find unless restricted to title. The name Zoe is pretty common.

I will start one of my zone 2 books this afternoon. But I'll check here before I finish anything in case we decided to do zone 1 first instead. I don't expect to finish either of them tonight anyway.

message 515: by megan (new)

megan | 1492 comments We will have to hope that we don’t get any injuries and that others do.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I actually never run into "Zoe", so that's interesting.

Alysa H. | 3840 comments megan wrote: "We will have to hope that we don’t get any injuries and that others do."

Exactly.

Okay awesome, so I can start Safe Zone reading at airport and on plane.

Definitely do Zone 2 first.
This is because one of my Zone 1 books cannot “legally” be finished until Monday.

message 518: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I started with my books for Zone 2, task 1 first.

Just double checking because I read conflicting answers in the question board.

I can use the Alexander McCall Smith book for ACID in author's name right? The McCall in his name counts right?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I marked my Zone 2 complete this afternoon. It was short and cute.

Going to friend's tonight. Will start on Sapphire Flames this weekend, can't wait! And also a non-fiction book club book I have for another zone, but won't be finishing any of them yet. Time for book juggling again.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I might be a little later in finishing my zone 2 books this round. Tomorrow is dorm move in day. Her school isn't too far away but we've been packing stuff this evening and will be moving her in tomorrow. Then taking her shopping for art supplies and groceries. (she has an apartment suite this time). But I'm going to really try and get my green letter, acid in title book done tomorrow. I'll home alone in the evening and I have it in 2 formats. If all goes well and I get home early enough, I might be able to finish both but I'm thinking the 2nd one won't get finished until Sunday morning.

If someone has a book for task iv for zone 2 and wants to read it to get us through the zone faster-I won't be upset in anyway. I did start my book for that but I can always wait to finish it and use it for zone 3.

Yes! Mods confirmed yes.
The sort-of-but-not-really conflict was that middle names can’t be used in spell-outs (so, like, you would not be able to use McCall for M) and another player seemed to be shocked by that for some reason.

Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "If someone has a book for task iv for zone 2..."

I would use my back-up but honestly at this point I don’t think I would get it done any sooner than you will get back to yours. I have 3 books going, need to start Recursion soon, and not a ton of time to read today/tomorrow (Fri/Sat) because of the travels. :/

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Alysa, I see you're reading The Flood. I have that series to start too, so if we get more B's available I'll jump on it too. Otherwise I'll start it another week, it looks good and I liked his book The Elementals

message 523: by Mary X (new)

I am excited about finally reading The Flood! It’s back home in NY and I won’t be starting it until closer to next weekend but I expect wonders. I’ll try to keep track of characters names too in case anything more useful comes up.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Okay sounds good, let me know.

Re Zone 1:
I started Recursion early this morning and will probably finish it tomorrow. I am also at about 80% of Breakaway so can finish that tonight.

Finished Breakaway after midnight so technically 2 Sept, but GR isn’t letting me mark read date as 2 Sept rather than 1 Sept because of time zones (i.e., current time and date in CA is still 1 Sept).
So I will put 2 Sept on the spreadsheet and just come back and edit my GR activity when I wake up.
ETA: read date is fixed.

megan | 1492 comments I will finish my D book for ACiD this morning. I accidentally left it at my parents place. So a quick KU from my list will work, since we have 2 BOM/other teams books already.

Hopefully the book you left at your parents place will work for Zone 3? (Assuming you retrieve it in time before the end of the Round!)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Update re finishing for zones 1 and then 3:
I will finish Recursion (Zone 1) tonight but possibly not until after midnight, so it may have to get a technical read date of Tuesday 3 Sept.
But either way we will definitely be able to finish our first Zone 3 books on Tuesday.

ETA: Aha! Done just before midnight in NYC.... but seeing as I am actually still in Wisconsin until tomorrow afternoon, I am done just before 11pm :D

For Zone 2? The link in the spreadsheet is going to the paperback version: # 16290121-a-peck-of-pickled-warlocks

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Ah, I may be looking at the wrong book/zone. Will go correct.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments Alysa wrote: "How are you doing in Florida, BTW? Everything okay in your area?"

Right now it's going fine, the storm has turned out a bit so we may not get hardly anything here central. Crossing fingers but it's a good sign for us.

message 540: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I made my editions match.

My dad lives in Volusia county. They evacuated a few hours NW out of the path of the storm.

Great. For the one that’s an audio CD, can you add verified length info?

My dad lives on the gulf coast pretty far south, and isn’t supposed to get hit at all, but he just recently moved there full time. Used to live on the east coast over near Ft Lauderdale. One of the reasons the moved across the state was to get out of the way of more storms.

message 542: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I will but it's not a Children's book.

message 543: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments Mary, Mary, Just a bit contrary wrote: "I will but it's not a Children's book."

Yes but all our non-childrens books still need to be over 100p, so if there is no page count on an audio edition I think it still needs to be verified.

I’m off again today, flying home! Hopefully no flight delays back to the east coast, with NYC being far north of storm. My partner flew home last night though, and had a 2 hour delay due to “predicted turbulence”. :/

message 544: by Mary X (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I am back in NY, unfortunately unable to sleep on the eve of my kid’s back-to-school day. Grr.
I should be finishing at least 2 books 1 book for Zone 3 tomorrow, possibly 2.
How is everybody doing?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments I just finished one. Two of them I've made progress on. About to head to bed. My phone got a bit wet so trying the rice thing since it can't read my sim card now - sighs. It's only like 2 months old at the most, if even that.

message 547: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I've been really busy the last few days but making progress here and there. Should have some decent reading time after tonight.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments These N's, argh!

I just finished a short one and my serial killer book club of the month one, so two marked done today. I'm in the mood for a re-read that's just past my six month date but no N's, grrrr.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6535 comments At least we still have time to locate the elusive N's for the final words.

message 550: by Alysa (new)

Alysa H. | 3840 comments I have a short N book on hold that I am hoping will turn up in the next day or two so I can read it this weekend. Fingers crossed!
